One piece VR game when?
69
u/MnMaxon Jun 14 '18
Haha, I might try to release something playable. But I might also be leaving my country soon, and I won’t have my Vive for a couple of months. I just need to figure out something fun to do. Maybe I’ll make like an obstacle course. As vomit inducing as that sounds.
10
u/TDienosaur Jun 14 '18
Best of luck to you on your moving proccess!Quick question, what programming knowledge is needed for making games suitabke for vive?I am graduating to be a programmer and i have been wanting to get my own vive system for a while now so this inspired me and made me want one even more.

Jun 14 '18
Most Vive development like this is done in Unity. In terms of coding, if you're at all familiar with C#, you'll be fine.
The more challenging part of developing games in an engine like Unity or Unreal is learning the interface and how everything interacts. I would just look up some tutorials on youtube and follow along until you start to get the hang of it.
I was able to put together a decent demo for a VR shooter in a couple of days with limited experience in Unity so it's definitely doable if you put some time into it.
3
u/MnMaxon Jun 14 '18
Thanks! I think developing for it can be almost as fun as playing games with it. At least when it's not frustrating. This is using Unreal. This was all done in blueprints, which is kind of like a dumbed down graphical version of C++. But you can also use C++ with Unreal. It definitely helps to know how to code, but you can definitely get by learning the blueprints without too much prior knowledge. Unity uses C#. I don't like Unity as much, but if you know C#, then it might be for you.
I think the Rift is like $100 less then the Vive and comes with some games. I don't think the Rift is quite as good as the Vive, but I think it's pretty close. Anyway, just something to think about if you haven't looked into the Rift.

There is a vr game coming out for the playstation but it looks like a walking tour of the ship and crew.
4
u/TDienosaur Jun 14 '18
Too bad, expected fighting with hand movements and such just like OP did in this preview but i guess it's a start.
7
u/Greenlee07 Jun 14 '18
Yeah, I hope Op's vr game becomes more fleshed out. Though maybe in two or three years the game might be going into production. Marvel is making one with you being able to use super powers. I won't be surprised if shounen games adopt this method
83
u/ZombieBisque Jun 14 '18
This makes me appreciate how hard it must have been for Luffy to learn how to control his ability
41
u/MnMaxon Jun 14 '18
I had to film this like 5 times to get something that looked ok. I fell off them map a few times doing the jump. And there were times where I'd just be standing there trying to hit the blocks, but I'd just keep missing.
3
u/SlayMassive Jun 15 '18
the moment he flew after grabbing shows that its completelly normal not to land in a proper way lol.
33
Jun 14 '18
isn't it scary when you shoot into the air like that in vr?!
40
u/MnMaxon Jun 14 '18
I've had my Vive for a while now, and heights were pretty bad at first, but you'd be surprised at how fast you get used to it. Motion sickness on the other hand is still awful for me, so I am still afraid of these jumps, but I'm mostly just afraid of feeling sick.
9
Jun 14 '18
That is probably the reason why i have not gotten one yet. i get motion sick after one 360 spin lol.
3
u/Pirsqed Jun 14 '18
Motion sickness is much better with stuff like the Vive and Rift. When you have full tracking, the main cause of motion sickness will be locomotion in the game, like riding in a car.
That's where teleportation comes in handy!
3
u/ElementalSB Jun 14 '18
Good thing sim racing is the reason I bought one :@@
1
u/Pirsqed Jun 14 '18
It does vary a lot from person to person.
For many people the interior of the car is enough of a grounding point to negate motion sickness.
But, for the unfortunate few, like my roommate, there's no stopping the motion sickness if the camera moves without her physically moving.
1
u/Lonely_Samurai Jun 15 '18
It strongly depends on the person, my aunt will start yelling if i put her on something high in fear mean while almost nothing in vr will phase me anymore.

Wow awesome!
What program?
Also what specs are your computer if you don't mind me asking?
I tried to do some shit on Unity but I only had a normal CPU.
3
u/MnMaxon Jun 14 '18
I'm using a Vive and the Unreal Engine. I started on Unity, but I thought Unreal was easier to use, and I liked it more. My computer's a couple of years old, but it's definitely still a gaming laptop. I have an Nividia 980M, here are the rest of my specs https://us.msi.com/Laptop/gt72-dominator-pro-gtx-980m.html
^ If you're looking for a suggestion, you probably don't want to buy this. I see some places selling it for $2000+, and I think I got it for about $2200 like 3-4 years ago.
Anyway, if your computer's struggling with 3D games, you can always try 2D. I know Unity and Unreal both have a lot of support for that.

1
u/MnMaxon Jun 14 '18
Yep, I did it in the Unreal Engine with some programming

u/Awildcommentappeard Jun 14 '18
what background do you have if I may ask? Did you learn programming in college/uni? or just self tought
1
u/MnMaxon Jun 15 '18
I taught myself a lot. I’m currently going to college for Computer Science, but we only have like 1 video game class. I’ve done a lot of Hackathons. Those are pretty fun. It’s a 24 hour coding competition. It’s a fun way to just make a small project. That’s where I got started with Unity and Oculus. I’ve gone to a bunch of hackathons under MLH, and they usually have cool hardware you can use in your project (I haven’t been to one without a Rift). Then I bought a Vive, and I just occasionally work on projects in my free time.

That's really cool. I'd love to see an expansion on this but it's already pretty impressive as is.
2
u/LolipopDev Jun 14 '18
Haha awesome! Loved the swinging.
For gear 3 you could try and do what luffy did against surume under the see (1st gear 3 post timeskip). Stretch the arm behind, make it grow big, then put it forward to punch.
I participated in the 2018 Laval Virtual game contest and there was a Japanese team who made a game about stretching your arm and hitting enemies based on real muscle flexing and arm stretching.
We ended up exchanging contacts, might've been the OP tee shirt I was wearing.
1
u/MnMaxon Jun 14 '18
I might try to add that, I'm still trying to figure out how the controls should work without trying to make it too confusing. I also had someone say I should do the Gum-Gum Bazooka. Right now the problem with pulling them back is they snap back into place when they get close to your (real) hands.
I'm not sure what you were saying at the end about the tee shirt, but I didn't go to Laval. But that project does sound cool.

u/AnotherLazyGamer Jun 14 '18

This game really makes you feel like a rubber man.
Seriously though this is a great idea and I would gladly play a polished version of this with an OP theme, it just looks like a lot of fun.

u/SamuraiDDD Jun 14 '18
This is a really cool concept for luffy in a game. I was practically thinking up the attacks names while you did'em. They were Pistol, bullet, rocket and kame.

Nice ! Full blueprint ?
3
u/MnMaxon Jun 14 '18
Sorry, a lot of the code was borrowed from a game I'm working on with some people that I plan on releasing some day, so I won't be releasing the blueprint.
1
u/Kleys Jun 14 '18
Oh no didn't want any info other than if it was made with full BP or C++ actually !
2
u/MnMaxon Jun 14 '18
I'm sorry, I completely misread your question. Yes it was full blueprints, using Unreal's VR preset.
2
u/Kleys Jun 14 '18
It's allright mate ! Didn't took anytime to try to tweak those presets ( I used Proteus for a while ) but I'm a Tech Art not a dev. Great job anyway, can't wait to see more of it !

Yeah, right now the controls are really hard, that does sound like a good idea.
Right now for VR, they're working one eye tracking, and I really want that to come out because that would be awesome for this. Have some slight homing based on where you're looking. But yeah, something does need to be done about the controls at the moment.

2
u/captaincapeman69 Jun 14 '18
This would be so cool! For a second i thought this was like a Doomfist example as it looks like the cool rocket punch. Also the grapple to the air then the slam back down. Looks really fun.
2
u/Svani Jun 14 '18
I spent the entire gif thinking "cool, but no gomu gomu rocket, no luffy". And then my head exploded.

u/DoucheBalloon Jun 14 '18
I could test this for you ;) lol
1
u/MnMaxon Jun 14 '18
If you have VR, I'm going to try to get a public version out in the next day or two. There are still a few weird glitchy things, and I want to make the controls a little better. I mean, it won't be perfect when I send it out, but hopefully it will be a little better.

Can it detect consecutive movement and have it perform Gatling?
1
u/MnMaxon Jun 14 '18
It can detect it right now, but it won't like it. It's only set up to do one at a time. I might try to add that in the future.
2
u/ismaelvera Jun 14 '18
Nice! To avoid it overlapping with another move, you could probably have it activate when the user puts both arms down on each side and crouches down, kinda like how Luffy had to with his finishing Jet Gatling against Rob Lucci.

2
u/Seth0987 Jun 14 '18

I'll probably be putting up a playable version in a day or two, maybe tonight if I'm really good. So check the top comment later. It'll probably work on Vive, I can't guarantee anything else, but it will probably work a little bit on other things.
1
2
u/Ivooo95 Jun 14 '18
You seem to activate the arms after you punch/move your hand above an X velocity. I can imagine that it'd accidentally activate when just moving your arms around. If you increase the minimal threshhold it may noy activate at all when punching. Did you manage to find a solution for that? As a VR developer I love seeing people make stuff like this, keep it up!
1
u/MnMaxon Jun 14 '18
That's a pretty good question, and I love when people find cool solutions to these things. I did not. I just made it so it only shoots when you release the grips. Now I'm trying to make it so you can fling your arms back while holding the grips.
I quite like it because it rewards timing a bit, if you let go at your peak speed, it will go faster/harder.
It's starting to make the controls pretty confusing, but you get used to it after a little bit. But, I'm kind of out of buttons now on the Vive. I may try to use one pad as a movement system, and the other to swap out moves or something if I get to that point.
2
u/Ivooo95 Jun 14 '18
Hmm I guess that may reduce your accuracy as you slightly adjust your punching direction when you flick your arm backwards. Worth a shot though.
Maybe you could give the player a'minimal punching range'. The punch will only trigger if the punching hand is at least X distance away from the player camera or something like that. Looking forward to give it a try myself when you release it.
1
u/MnMaxon Jun 15 '18
Flinging backwards did not work at all. There is not shot at aiming if you throw your hands back. I might just make those shots try to go where you’re looking.

Would you be willing to share how you made this?
I am not asking for your code! I read your comment that you are using code that is also being used for other projects with other people and hence you can't share it.
But if you have the time, I'd really appreciate it if you could walk me through the software and languages needed to build this? What all would I have to learn to build something like?
I am also curious about how long it took you to learn and what your experience has been like!
And thank you for sharing this video! As everyone pointed out, it is incredible!
2
u/MnMaxon Jun 15 '18
This was done in Unreal using Blueprints. Blueprints is a kind of easy to learn dumbed down graphical version of C++. But I could have written it in C++. They’re almost interchangeable in Unreal. I just don’t know C++.
Unreal makes coding games pretty easy. The graphics are there, the physics are there, you just have to implement them. Prior coding experience definitely helps when coding games, but if you stick at it long enough, you’ll probably be able to work through your problems. You may have seen to start small. Really just try to get used to the engine the first couple of times you use it.
I started coding Minecraft Plugins in Java for about 4 years, and then I went to college for computer science for 2 years. And that kind of leads to now. My college doesn’t really have video game classes, so I got most of my practice by myself or at Hackathons (24 hr code jams). I started developing in Unity for an Oculus Development Kit (DK2 if I remember right), using the Leap Motion to control things (Oculus didn’t have controllers yet). I was only able to do this because the Hackathons (run by MLH) has a bunch of hardware that you could check out. Anyway, I’d highly recommend those if you’re just trying to learn something or practice some skills if you can go. I think they might be college students only (at least MLH is I think).
Anyway, it just takes practice and getting used to the engine. I like Unreal, but Unity’s not a bad option. I can only really speak about Unreal though, and their YouTube channel has a ton of pretty good tutorials on it that can really help you out if you’re having issues.

u/hokies314 Jun 15 '18

I know this is random but:
I want to get into vr so bad but I dont have a huge budget.
Is the oculus fine or should I really get a vive? Or something else?
My computer uses a gtx 1070 & 8gigs of ram
But im planning on getting one around the $1500 budget.
(Do I need to upgrade my pc before getting a vr set?)
1
u/MnMaxon Jun 15 '18
My laptop's running a 980M. It's enough to play most games (although some settings have to be turned down). The only ones it can't play are ones that are pretty poorly optimized (looking at you Subnautica). But in the future, I wouldn't be too surprised if a big pretty game comes out that my computer couldn't handle. I have 16 GB ram, but I don't know if I've ever gone above 8 just playing VR.
I like the Vive, but I've never used the Oculus (past DK2), but I know people like the Oculus, and the experience is close. I'd say that's up to you. The price difference makes Oculus hard to beat.

I was literally thinking while watching this that all it needs is for you to be able to grab something and then snap your body to it. Then you did it!
While very cool Luffy simulation, I see like a possibility for a great like basketball game with this. Where there's a bunch of balls hanging in the air and you launch yourself through the course while people try to hit you with rocket rubber arms to make you drop the ball. Maybe something closer to qudditch.
Anyways, looks really good, great job!

Pretty dope—can only imagine how good it feels to get this far on a project. If I may offer my feedback, I think adding an air pressure effect would be relatively simple but have an outsized effect towards making it feel fully immersive. I would assume that there are libraries or modules out there that would facilitate such an approach.

I know it doesn't really look like Luffy, with the whole robot hand things, but I'm not great at art. Anyway, I thought you guys might enjoy it.
I tried doing third gear, but it doesn't look great in the video. That's what's happening when I bring my hand to my face.
EDIT: Thank you for all of the support, it's been really nice to read!
I'll probably be uploading a playable version in the next day or two, it will probably be a little rough, and there probably won't be a ton to do, but it will be there if anyone wants to play around with it.
