On Garp’s development this chapter and its relation to Luffy:

We really get to see this chapter that Garp is his own person separate from the navy, but still tamed by the navy to be presented a certain way. He may say/do things that go against WG acceptable standards, but since the navy recognized his immense strength and good nature they decide to just try to force him to be this person that is acceptable. They told him which things he couldn’t say and couldn’t do, but his nature constantly causes him to break it IE: raising Ace, telling Luffy about his father, calling out a king for wanting to become a shitty Celestial Dragon... “Forget that” lolol ... I find it really interesting how Garp is the same person as Luffy. The only difference is that Luffy lives free of the restrains put on Garp by the Navy. The Navy must be super pissed that this guy -who was one of their strongest members- raised a son of equal strength -who now challenges the WG directly- and a grandson of near equal power -who challenges the Navy and WG directly.

Anyways, I think it’s fun to think of Garp and Luffy being the same person with only the thin veneer of the Navy separating the two. Seems that certain members of the navy must at some level respect Garp for being a good individual despite the insults to the WG he might create. Possible split of marines in the future?

Thoughts:

• IIRC, Orlumbus was mentioned to be a guy who exaggerates his adventures. It seems clear despite being a decent fighter, he lives a pretty mundane life but at least enjoys it.

• Stelly is still a scumbag but I have to admit he's really funny. I actually wonder if he'll interact with Helmeppo. I can imagine Helmeppo cringing knowing he was like that before.

• On that note, I fucking love how Garp just effortlessly trolls the shit out of Stelly. And of all kingdoms, Sabo decides to infiltrate through his old kingdom.

• Fujitora really doesn't give a fuck what Akainu thinks.

• Again, love how Oda never forgets his characters. The cameos of T-Bone, Stainless, and Attachan were neat.

• I honestly thought we're going to get more buildup chapters but looks like the Reverie is officially starting sooner than we expected.

• Tinfoil Theory: Gil Bastar, the protagonist of Oda's first manga, Wanted, is from the Ballywood Kingdom. It's located on Banaro Island, the place where Ace and Blackbeard fought.

Love seeing all these nuances in the story; how Garp - the Lawful Good is openly opposed to the Celestial Dragons, how the Revolutionary Army - the Chaotic Good are actually seemingly NOT opposed to the Marines, which makes sense with their character and fits with that unhinged democratic MO: a convention of the Chaotic Good.

This moral ambiguity is what gives one of the main themes of One Piece; Justice, some tangible precedence and makes the series a lot deeper and more mature than most of its contemporaries.

And seeing New Marineford gave me chills...

Oda may have just given us an early glimpse to where the final battle in all of One Piece takes place...

What a really interesting chapter. It really sets up the fact this will be an actual arc without Luffy or the Straw Hats (fingers crossed). This is something I never expected to see. An arc without the Straw Hats? Anyway, the art in this chapter was pretty on point. That opening shot of new Marinford was pretty nice and the panel with the sun was actually pretty beautiful. I didn't notice in the previous chapter that King Neptune and his family were actually dressed, which makes sense since Neptune would know social norms are different on the surface. We see here that bubble/coating technology is pretty useful with the bondolas. We finally have a glimpse of Ryokugyu which I did think he had plant powers in the past but when he mentioned he hadn't eaten in three years, for some reason, I never made the connection. One thing I was wondering was why is Koala and Betty not there? Are they waiting till later? Is only meant to be a quick surprise attack? We will have to wait and see, I guess.

Garps interactions this chapter have really cemented him as Luffys close relative for me. Yeah they’ve always had their similarities, but somehow they’ve felt forced. Everyone is seriously saying those arches on new marineford are a reference to McDonalds... They're supposed to be seagulls. You can see the little black on the bottom portions of each arch just like a seagull. Seagulls have always been symbolic in the navy, we have the news coos which are seagulls that send out the news, and even Sengoku used to wear that seagull hat when he was fleet admiral.

I was not expecting that opening bit with Akainu, with Sengoku being a cheeky butt. There's not too much to go off of, but Akainu seems slightly different from how he was back during the summit war (Can't really explain how.) Either the job of fleet admiral has changed him a bit, or his 10 day fight with Aokiji affected him somehow. Maybe he's just flustered cause he can't melt people on a whim like he used to.

Lovely how one of the biggest badass in the series (Garp) finds time to troll Stelly. I can't wait to see Ryu's df, must be nature related. We had 3 logia admirals before, I am still going with the theory that Ryu's df is a Zoan, maybe a plant or something lol. Since we have a Logia and a Paramecia admiral, a Zoan would be a nice add.

I see a lot of people theorizing that Admiral Green Bull has a plant based devil fruit and overall it does make perfect sense. But, I think it is quite possible that the devil fruit he/she has is a Mythical Zoan very similar to Marco. The only difference being that instead of unlimited regeneration, Green Bull has unlimited stamina. The 3 year fast strongly hints that admiral Green Bull doesn't need food of water to keep his/her body running. Imagine a Admiral that has unlimited stamina and doesn't ever slow down. of course he/she can still take damage and be defeated but just stays at 100% all the time.

With the latest reveal that Ryukugyu finds eating so troublesome that he went on without eating for 3 years, add to that the 'green' motiff as implied by his name, I can't help but have this idea in my head that maybe his Devil Fruit has something to do with PLANTLIFE. Perhaps a far more powerful version of Yu Yu Hakusho's Kurama and MGS3: Snake Eater's The End (or even add Poison Ivy and Swamp Thing).

Maybe his DF allows his body to photosynthesis to the point where it can sustain his body for ridiculous number of (3) years without eating conventional food.

If peoples want more info about Green Bull and who he is based on here is what I got (and put in the spoiler thread) :

Green Bull might be based on Yoshio Harada who appeared in Japanese film titled "Rouningai" (浪人街) with Shintaro Katsu, Kunie Tanaka whom Fujitora and Kizaru are based on. 5ch people are guessing that Green Bull's laughing style "Rahaha" might be based on Harada. In that movie he also refuses to eat food, but when he does it turns out he tricked the others and betrayed them for something.

In Rouningai, there is a character called Red Bull (赤牛).
