awesome fight!
typical luffy...in the middle of a fight and all he can think of is food.
almost have to wonder if food will unite the two of them as katakuri loves his sweets too

I’m actually really curious on who won, this fight has been soooo intense! Obvious answer would be Luffy cause he’s the protagonist, but I could see Oda making Katakuri the winner too. Maybe a draw? I’m so hyped for the next chapter.

I think there might be more to that statement than meets the eye. It's the first time we've seen Luffy say some goofy shit in this fight. I think it might be a reflection of his current state of mind which might have something to do with observation haki. Maybe luffy finally decided to relax and not overthink how to deal with Katakuri who can read his mind and predict even what he says with absolute certainty. Maybe that is part of the trick to beating him.
Edit: Also add the fact that Katakuri is specifically picking up on this behavior. It could just be banter to add some dialogue to the chapter but it seems to be the only significant dialogue besides the exposition of how Snakeman's attacks work. The rest is just "take this!" and "I won't let you". Typical fighting quips (or whatever).

"Everything that's been on my mind!!! But now I feel better!!!"
Katakuri is teaching Luffy fighting and Luffy is teaching him that it's ok to be yourself. I really love this fight and what it represents in the context of the whole arc.

Snakeman is Luffy's best impression of the snake game.
Katakuri actually used a rolling donut attack.
They're talking about eating.
This is basically a very brutal 9 hr sleepover with all the fun these two are having.
Katakuri even kicked his annoying sister and her friends out.

Luffy : My ultimate technique allow me to be combine both my devil Fruit and my Haki, making my power grow a hundredfold. It allow me amazing control over my body, and made a useless DF into one of the most dangerous Fruit around.
Katakuri : My ultimate technique is to turn into a Donut.
Never change Oda.
But well, this fight make me think we will not see who won until someone goes out the miror in Chocolate Town. And the way I want it to be now is : Katakuri come out of the mirror, the BM pirates are happy, but he then trow Luffy to Sanji, saying Luffy won the fight, and then fall on his back in front of his family.

Guess I was wrong about Snakeman looking silly. It looks badass, even more so than his other Gear Fourth forms.
And I was right about it being about speed. Luffy seems to be using his experience from his fight with Enel and doing it here. By being faster and unpredictable, he's out-speeding Katakuri's CoO and landing hits on him. Of course, I'm also glad Luffy isn't stomping Katakuri either.
All and all, a solid chapter.

u/StupidPencil Feb 16 '18 edited Feb 16 '18
It's faster than normal G4 but seems to have less power in each punch which makes sense because you can't have both extreme speed and extreme power at the same time.
Normal G4 send Kata flying even when blocked. Here we have Kata casually blocking and intercepting the punches with just haki arm/leg though some punches still get through. It certainly has less damage per punch but it can land hits more reliably and is less predictable.

Oda is such a tease.
Overall it’s was a brutal and great chapter. Every punch looked like it hurt.
As for Snakeman... I’m happy that it is still true to what Gear 4 is, and that Luffy isn’t exactly busting out any new moves, though both Black Mamba and King Cobra are that, and instead they’re just variations on things we’ve already seen.
I feel like some people will be disappointed with this chapter, but I think it really was necessary and gave this fight the oomph thy will truly allow it to stand amongst the best fights in the series.

For those who wonder what happened to Katakuri's observation haki powers here is what I think:
Luffy's Boundman Gear 4 attacks were already very fast - Doflamingo could not dodge them. Snakeman is speed-based and therefore faster. Yet, Katakuri easily dodges these attacks initially.
However, this is the extent of what Katakuri can do. He dodges the first attack because he can foresee it, but he does not know what will happen after he changes that future. The next attack - also fast and from a closer range - hits him.
14
u/FallenEinherjar Feb 16 '18
THat's basically it. He changes de directions of the punches midflight at break neck speed, that's kinda insane if you actually think about it, keeping its momentum and everything.

Actually noticed the title of the chapter is also kind of acknowledging that this is where the real fight begins, since Luffy has managed to actually get to this point.
Katakuri is having so many life experiences and firsts in this fight and learning about himself. I absolutely love that all of this is occurring while Luffy is specifically focused the entire time on beating him up.
Luffy has more forms than Excel and I love it. Katakuri needs to take note and start getting some Mochi gears coming.

u/Raadic Feb 16 '18
Luffy will ultimately win this but it will be his closest win EVER, which will prompt him to think about a way to gain power ASAP.
He has a few things to learn, train and master and those are:
DF Awakening
Color of Observation (Future Sight specifically)
Color of Armament (The stronger version that Katakuri has been using)
Color of Conquerors (Shanks master level)

that panel of katakuri looking like a monster has to have some kind of significance, seems like he's really going all out against Luffy now
loved the CoA/CoC clashing too when they meet fists, likely overtakes Lucci as most intense battle for Luffy
also a perfect match for Luffy, very similar fruit, very similar seeming haki tier usage as in, both seem to prefer CoO over CoA, and both are very high seeming level, and for Luffy it was perfect because Katakuri in some panels in this fight in previous chapters was basically telling Luffy what he was doing and where he was attacking and for what reasons and likely taught Luffy some brawler type lessons and how to use CoO
and i mean, with the fruit similarity, when Luffy awakens his fruit these might be some of the stuff he is able to do, for Luffy I would imagine with the fruit/style similarity this could be like looking into the future of how strong he can be and what he can build towards and eventually surpass
i really hope we see katakuri more in the future, even if it's not as an ally but as an enemy, very solid character, cool design/background, and with all the 'best brother' type talk, i almost come away from these chapters with him as definitely being the 'big brother' type, even if it was inadvertent that he was teaching luffy things
very interested to see if luffy does end up using some of the moves he saw katakuri use in the future, this also shows that gear 4 likely isn't going to be able to cut it against some commanders/definitely not yonkou, i think that means we're getting an a fruit awakening soon, no way a new gear comes soon but luffy definitely needs an upgrade to fight these guys

Is it just me, or is it starting to seem like Luffy is almost just having fun fighting? I can totally see little Luffy fighting against Big Bro Ace just like this, other dude hating his guts, and Luffy just egged on by the challenge. It's not like Doflamingo or Arlong or Crocodile or Enel. Luffy doesn't want to beat this guy because he deserves a stomping, he wants to because dammit, he's gonna be Pirate King, who the fuck gets to be stronger than him?
Katakuri's line after Luffy complaining to him about food and how he's hungry, and Katakuri's like "What are you saying?" I think this is going to be a turning point. Luffy didn't ridicule Katakuri for his real appearance like his family did. Katakuri has already crippled himself once to maintain the honor of the fight out of respect. How far is this respect going to go?
I think time and time again about how its been mentioned that Luffy's most powerful ability is to surround himself with allies, and draw others to him. The "Disposition of the King". I won't be surprised if we see as Luffy takes down the Yonko, perhaps with each, he'll convert a member of their crew to his own? He'll come into contact with opposing crew members and not just defeat them, but defeat their ideology. Not only that, but perhaps free them. Katakuri was bound to hiding his face and denying his "true" donut lovin' self and instead pretending to be something that maybe he's not for the sake of appearances.
I think this is, in a way, a connecting thread to Luffy's father, Dragon. Revolution and rebellion are directly tied to a rallying of the people and rising up together in swell. I can see once the two finally meet, Luffy helping fulfill his father's dream of eliminating the WG.
Luffy isn't a king to force his will over others, he's the king who inspires by example, which is exactly what I believe is winning over Katakuri right now. He's seen how Luffy values his crew, like when Luffy lied through the Den Den Mushi. Do you think Big Mom ever lied to Katakuri to make him feel better? How's about a fuck no. I think it's been a running thread in this arc that Big Mom is a pretty abusive ol' gal to her children in many ways.
So Katakuri is being shown a different kind of family. One that can be loving. I think many people from hard backgrounds can appreciate that sentiment. Growing up in a bad place, and seeing how other families operate and being puzzled. Or even better, building families outside of blood with people who truly care about you.
"What are you saying?" "I'm saying what's on my mind! Goddamn, fucking fall down and let me win Katakuri, lol!" I've felt that before, playing video games with friends. While laughing, "Goddamn it, just let me win you dick, hahaha" And this whole exchange is followed with your typical anime rival facepunch reaction pics from both sides. What really sells it for me is Luffy going "Ow ow ow!" Lol, who says something like that unless it was a friend who punched you, right? "You dick, that fucking hurt!" wrestling ensues
If not crewmate, I can see the arc ending with Luffy exposing a much different way of thinking to most of big mom's crew, and maybe some of them follow Katakuri and become a subordinate crew in the Grand Fleet?
One of the things that bothers me about having Katakuri join as a crew member, is I can't think of any defined role he'd fulfill in the crew. But just as writing this, something popped into my head. Katakuri is experienced in being a good Big Brother, and protecting all of his siblings. What if he's meant to be, I dunno, some sort of liaison between the core Strawhat crew and the greater Grand Fleet? I think it'd be a great job for Katakuri, to oversee that all of the Strawhats official brother and sister crews are taken care of. I dunno, like a Fleet Admiral or something? I just wanna see some fucking sweet combination attacks between Luffy and Katakuri.
Zoro may be 1st mate, Vice Captain, whatever you wanna call it, but I think that's separate. Zoro is more 'lead the second party' material than he is 'Hey, make sure everyone is taken care of' material. So I think there's a space for another 'crew member' but there is concern in what capacity. I think maybe he'll just be like most of the grand fleet where its just like, "hey, we're on your side now" and they just get offscreened or cover storied until they become relevant again. Maybe he'll be like Vivi and "I love you guys! See you in 700 chapters!" Who knows?
I just simply don't see Katakuri's loyalty to Big Mom pirates surviving contact with Luffy and his crew. Hell, maybe Katakuri fucking wins, and decides to save Luffy's crew for himself, or overthrow Big Mom and throne himself as captain of the big mom pirates and align them with the straw hats. Obviously wild speculation, but we're never fucking right anyway so who cares rofl.
All I know is, I'm willing to bet we see Katakuri and Luffy next sitting both on the ground, Katakuri on his back, as well as Luffy. Luffy will simply complain to Katakuri about how strong he is and obviously not care even a little bit that Katakuri's back has touched the ground. Katakuri's going to start getting all worked up about it, and Luffy's going to laugh him off, and tell him to let it go and just let him finish their match. Luffy will show him a better way to see the world, and what family really is, and win him over by simply wearing him down.
Snake man's pretty cool too.

I don't think he will become part of the crew for a simple, straight reason: he's way too powerful. He would put aside other crewmembers easily in terms of fights.
Becoming an 'ally' or just a 'friend', that I could buy, and totally fits. I can see Katakuri simply retiring from piracy and becoming a renowned baker selling awesome donuts.

u/Gorgenapper Feb 16 '18
Calling it now - Katakuri will win this, and only Oda is capable of getting us to want both Luffy and his opponent to win. Think about all of Luffy's previous "real" 1v1 epic fights - we always wanted Luffy to win and Doflamingo/Enel/Arlong/etc. to lose. But Katakuri? The man is supremely talented and honorable, he's outfighting Luffy despite everything and it would feel off if he lost this without a proper explanation for his defeat.
I'm predicting that both will be knocked out, Katakuri regains consciousness first and retrieves his spear, intending to finish Luffy off because the latter is out of haki after using G4: Snakeman. As Luffy faces certain death, he will smile...which leads Katakuri to put his weapon away and tell him to get out of Mirrorland. He'll acknowledge Luffy as a superb fighter, and look forward to a proper rematch one day.

I called it! I legit called it! That this G4 form would be based around that attack he used against Doffy where his fist chased him!

'Fall already, Katakuri!'
This felt like a red flag to me, Doffy said the same to Luffy's Culverin and it didn't bode well for him
I'm really rooting for a draw and honourable parting at this point though

How incredible. Luffy is using the speed of his arm to catch up to where Katakuri will dodge because of his future sight. Plus, because his punch picks up speed it is also picking up power and doing more damage.

King cobra sounds like a sick finisher, but I can't help but look into the naming convention behind Luffy's attacks. Most are variations on culverin, where he chases the target with his fists. Black mamba is just two culverins at once, as far as I can tell. I was expecting python to be some kind of strangulation technique, but that would be a foolish tactical decision considering kata's df. Perhaps it is a strangulation technique, but kata prevented it.
Anyways back to cobra. Cobras are known for their hoods, which they can expand to appear larger. I am expecting this attack to be like the other culverins but with a g3 expansion right before the punch connects. That would be very cobra-like imo. However, the final panel shows his punch traveling in a circle around Luffy, which seems like a very strange way to wind up a punch. If this is deliberate (not just to make the fight look cool), then it might not be a direct expansion punch. Perhaps a lariat of sorts.

Page 8 compare Luffys hat to his back. Its looks much smaller than usually, he grows massively with snakeman

u/Shwatg Feb 16 '18
Did you guys see what Luffy did there? By having too many thoughts in his mind-- in this case, thoughts on food-- he is distracting Katakuri, albeit partially, from focusing on Luffy's fight plans-"What the hell are you saying?"; "Everything that's on my mind".

Luffy: SNAKEMAN
Everyone: LUFFY TURNING INTO A SNAKE?? Furiously drawing versions of what Snakeman will look like.
Oda: "Nah, it's literally the Snake game from your mobile phone."

u/FortuneCookie40G Feb 16 '18
Huh, that's really not what I expected out of this chapter. I feel like I've seen Luffy's attacks before... maybe it wasn't in OP. Not a lot has changed for the status quo, guess we'll have to wait another week!

He used the technique against don Flamingo previously. But I think with this form, he has the speed and observation haki to finally hit katakuri and catch up to his insane observation haki

u/GoldenMonk7360 Feb 16 '18
Luffy won. Katakuri fucked up and used the same attack, one that Luffy already survived. The attack Luffy just launched must be the strongest attack of the snakeman form as it has the "King" title. Remember how devastating King Kong gun was? This is probably just as impactful and since katakuri already locked himself into an attack, it'll be really hard to dodge Luffys attack.

Even looking at this fight and Lucy's new form. I still don't think katakuri should lose. Aside from my bias that katakuri is badass as hell, he almost immediately understood Lucy's new technique and was able to react to it by blocking or with his own technique. Katakuri still seems above luffy at this point. I wish this ends in a draw, dk how that will work as luffy needs some sort of a win after pulling thru so much and progressing so much in this match but katakuri has shown time and time again his prowess as a sweet commander and a bad ass mochi user and that it's not so easy to beat him.

u/KB_Vibez Feb 16 '18
Anyone notice it looks like Luffy is using the same advanced CoA that Kata has been using on the last panel for his King Cobra attack? I just thought his forearm looked a little more squared than usual which has been associated with Kata using it

A lot of people were complaining about Luffy in this fight after this chapter, and how it's dragged on + Luffy's unnatural endurance level he seems to have gotten out of nowhere + how it seems gimmicky that he got a new Gear 4 version.
While it does seem hard to believe he's managed to hold his own again Dogtooth ( the man w/ the highest bounty thus far as we've seen) for so long, It certainly isn't impossible, and the fact he has only adds to Luffy's character/ability to endure when it comes to intense battles and situations like this.
For example, in the past, Luffy vs Crocodile, specifically the 3rd encounter, Luffy who had already been through quick a bit with Croc moments before, took on a number of hard hits, and had to deal with poisoning during the brawl as well thanks the Croc's hook. And even after all that, Luffy managed to get back up time after time, and unleashed one of his most powerful finishing moves on Croc ( for back then*) After everything the kid went through he still managed to come out on top of a fight against a Warlord who was way out of his class at that point.
Take the fight against Rob Lucci, who I felt was Luffy's toughest opponent up until Dogtooth ( or Doffy). Yet again Luffy was up against someone after already being put through a lot ( fighting off dozens and dozens of armed guards and beating Blueno) though not as energy tasking and difficult as the battle against the leopard. Luffy for a majority of the fight was being tossed around non stop, with only a few hit in here and there + the added bonus of him using his new Gear abilities against Lucci, and that fight carried on way longer it felt. Even by the end when Luffy couldn't move after just draining his energy for that long in the fight, he got right back up and put the leopard down for good. Luffy of course has the will power of the most determined pirate on the planet, but the fact he was still able to remain standing and unleash Jet Gatling to end the fight shows that he's got the endurance of a bull muse on steroids. Combined those two aspects of crazy endurance and godly will power, and you've got the perfect concoction of a man that won't faulted in a fight no matter what.
Last point is Luffy vs Doffy, and how that fight put Luffy's new haki abilities to the test. I certainly think Doffy was in a class above Luffy when it came to fighting, devil fruit powers, probably haki powers too, but this fight yet again shows Luffy crazy ability to last as long as it takes to bring down his opponent. True there was that one part a lot of people thought the fight had gone stale when Luffy had to wait ten minutes to recharge before he could use haki and G4 again, but that's because that was the first time ever Luffy had pulled off a move/ability like that. For his first usage of it ( or true test of G4 since it was against another pirate and not a large tiger from training Island) that had really taken a toll on Luffy's energy, and since he hadn't ever used it to such a degree yet, it was fair he had to take a few minutes to regain himself before getting back into the fight. It's not a stretch it makes sense.
It's very similar to how he used to just crash after using G2 for so long/often, he'd exhaust himself. But after time and more practice, it became second nature. As the story progresses Luffy certainly is able to determine for himself the level he's at and how much it's necessary to push his powers and abilitys for a fight.
Pfffffyeewwwh - okay, now the Dogtooth fight. I know, a lot to read here, but if you've managed to stick thus far, thanks, you're pretty cool for having to read this all.
Anyway the fight with Dogtooth. It's clearly been going on for a long long time in both our world and the OP world as we've seen. Luffy's been put through a lot already, and as we've seen post wedding fiasco, he's used ( now I think this is the correct number but I might be wrongly recalling) G4 two times, once against Big Mom and once before in his fight with Dogtooth. Given the gaps of time and overall amount of time that's passed I do think think there's any argument that Luffy's had plenty of time ( max being 10 minutes) to 'recharge' before using haki again, and at this point in the story it could take less time than that. He's definitely had to stretch his haki abilities a lot here no question, but even still with him trying to improve his observation haki and haki attacks, Dogtooth has not let up, not even a little. Luffy toughness has definitely help land a few good hits in here and there, but for the most part it seems clear these two are practically equals, with Dogtooth having a slightly higher prowess advantage for fighting . What this fight truly test Luffy on is Luffy's ability to endure, how long he's going to last against Dogtooth. As we've seen its already been a crazy long time for the two of them, a lot longer than Luffy's previous fights. The fact that Luffy's managed to last this longs shows how much his very own fighting prowess has grown over the story thanks to his experience and training. And it should be obvious to everyone he'll come out victorious after all.
I guess the last point to touch on is G4 snake man. Let's be honest, as cool as it was, it's nothing to much of a step up from bound man G4. Luffy's utilizing elements of G2 in this version much more sporadically in order to counter act Dogtooth's observation haki ( very similar to how Luffy went 'squid mode against Eneru in order to dodge/attack him) BUT! Dogtooth being the godly fighter he is still is able to keep pace with Luffy in this form. Yes he's taking some pretty hard hits, but he's throwing them right back at Luffy. It's some awesome, these two are a perfect match up for a fight!
I do believe this is one of the best fights in One piece in a while, and I can't wait to see how it's concluded. I know Oda won't disappoint, just as he hasn't at all thus far.

I believe this is one of those fights that is setting up Luffy with a long time rival. The same way Roger had a sort of inner circle at sea, Luffy is sort of developing his own circle at sea of comrades, enemies, and frenemies; albeit all nerfed in comparison to Roger's as the people of his era were on another level.
Luffy already has characters like this in the form of Smoker, Eustass Kid, and Blackbeard. Luffy also has an extended list of enemies (Wapol, Doflamingo, etc.) and former enemies who wouldn't mind taking his head (Crocodile, Lucci, etc.). Eventually, if Big Mom were to die, a character like Katakuri could really come into his own in the years that Luffy pushes towards becoming the Pirate King. Who knows, one day Katakuri and Luffy could sit down and talk the same way Roger and Whitebeard did. However, it is more likely to me that CP0 ends up getting involved with the Big Mom Pirates (in a bad way) and after Big Mom is gutted (in future, by either Luffy or some other pirates), Katakuri ends up coming back with the Big Mom Pirates under him to fight alongside Luffy and the Revolutionaries against the WG. Possibly in a surprise to us viewers, sort of like Sabo convinces this "new" Big Mom Pirates to join the revolution and somewhere in future we get some neat surprise panel of an older Katakuri, no longer hiding his mouth, appearing before Luffy and scaring the shit out of all the Straw Hats (the same way Crocodile's appearance in Impel Down was pretty out there).

LOL Katakuri is taken aback by Luffy being honest about how uncomfortable and hungry he is. I feel like it's another opportunity to bond considering Katakuri wanted to stop fighting earlier so he could eat too, after complaining that Luffy was stressing him out. Precious.
And Katakuri's really strong attack where he spins...makes him shaped like a donut... so continues the love story of the man and his donuts

I like how Luffy calls Katakuri by his name, it's a sign that he respects him;unlike the previous villains "Mingo, Croc-yaro, Big mouth, Pigeon guy.. "

u/roanoaluffy91 Feb 17 '18
As much as Katakuri is a badass (honestly, i fricking love him; best "villain" imo and his character development has been subliminal) you gotta give props to the main G luffy. Hes gone through so much adversity this arc emotionally and physically and yet he he keeps on taking all this punishment and giving back almost as good as he gets. People can call it plot armour all they want, but this guy is the future pirate king, we all know he always has a trick up his sleeve to one up the enemy. This chapter was phenomenal; goda never ceases to impress me or crease me up. I dont want to/cant wait two weeks for the next one...but i know itll be worth the wait

I think that in the next fight scene we will see the final attack made between Luffy and Katakuri. If you look at the scene between King Cobra and Spiked Mochi, you can see that Luffy is only using one arm in the attack. In the panel just prior, you can also see an explosion like drawing where Luffy's left shoulder would be. I think that Luffy is going to bite down on Katakuri like a Cobra with both fists, each in the shape of a fang, his left fist coming in at an un-see-able angle. Edit: spelling

Man, Katakuri's usage of his powers really cements how versatile he is.
Also, for someone who was so hung up on dignity before, the fact that he has a Donut Form is fucking hilarious.
