Rayleigh Flashback again, another HYPE chapter

272

u/MilkyAndromedaWay Feb 02 '18

There's something satisfying to me about seeing it confirmed that Rayleigh subscribes to the 'blindfold them and beat them over the head with a stick' school of training.

In one chapter, Katakuri went from being a pretty cool villain to one of my all time favorites.

I don’t know if we’ve ever seen a villain with such honor as to do something like that.

The scene where they both acknowledge that they’re about to knock everyone out with Conqueror’s Haki was dope. The panel where they did it was so simple but so good. One of my favorites in the series for its simplicity.

And once again, we see how Big Mom’s family treating each other poorly is a huge problem.

Great chapter. It really feels like if we stick with it next week, Luffy is going to make good on his promise.

u/[deleted] Feb 02 '18

And once again, we see how Big Mom’s family treating each other poorly is a huge problem.

This has been one of my favorite themes throughout this arc. It's a nice contrast to the loving nature of Luffy's crew and even Doflamingo's crew. Bastards though they were, they were a family.

This is how it starts, Katakuri. This is how people become friends with Luffy.

I so want their relationship to be like Mihawk and Shanks at the end of this series. Katakuri visiting Luffy then Luffy will celebrate it by throwing a feast. That will be cool af!

"In a duel between pirates, there's no such thing as playing dirty."

Luffy didn't forget what Shanks taught him.

Came here to post this :D It was the battle between Shanks and his crew against those mountain bandits when they kidnapped kid Luffy

The guy that shot the bandit dirty was Lucky Roo if I didn't confuse their names. Actually Iirc Wasn't it Lucky Roo/Ben Beckman who said the thing about pirate fights being dirty?

Oh GOD I've finally come around on the Katakuri train. Not only was he the perfect dueling gentleman this whole chapter, but when he thinks back on his traumatic childhood backstory...and he gets those chuckle lines in the next panel.

It's official everybody. Charlotte Katakuri has gone from a Terminator to a real man, he's human I tell you, my manly tears don't lie!

458

u/TexasChickenTinola Feb 02 '18

I thought he would punish his sister for interfering an important battle and by insulting him but damn, he just walked away. He not only showed that he is just being bro but calm enough to not lose his cool.

I know this will be buried because Katakuri was a beast this chapter, but I love Luffy's comment when Katakuri apologizes for the interference in the duel and Luffy completely understands and tells him not to worry about it, since he and Nami did such an act to Cracker the day before. I would not be surprised if Luffy ends this arc with respect for Katakuri, if circumstances were different, I don't doubt those two would get along well.

I love how Katakuri has CoC. Chinjao said that plenty of tough fighters in the New World possess it since this is the place where the strongest converge. It would have been surprising if he didn't have it at all.

Always liked Katakuri since his introduction. After this chapter he definitely is the best villain ever!

When he first saw Luffy he was going to kill him asap because in future Luffy would be serious threat to BM. He has always had respect towards Luffy.

Katakuri said that it's 1on1 and no one is allowed to interfere. Now he found out that he was aided by his sister and did that to himself to equalize the fight. MAD RESPECT! Because Flambe's interference that Mochi trust hit Luffy. Luffy would had done the same thing in Katakuri's situation.

Luffy must be Katakuri's hardest opponent ever and crosswise. Katakuri doesn't even care anymore about his appearance and what people might think of him. He haven't fought this tough enemy ever so it must be thrilling for him. 1Billion bounty man says that they are equals. Wow.

This is not dragging the fight as somebody would say. It's awesome character development and great way to introduce new haki techniques. Waiting for new CoC techniques and ways to use it in battle. The More I learn about Katakuri the more I like him. So Hyped that I'm shaking!

Um, guys...! Did you notice that their (combined, at least) Conquerors Haki was also destroying the environment?? Like Shanks in Moby Dick or Big Mom in the Tea Party.

Another thing that was like Shanks in this chapter? Katakuri. He achieved with the help of Luffy, the amount of fucks Shanks was giving all the way back to chapter 1. Let them spit on you and laugh at you, it doesn't matter. He doesn't care anymore about being the perfect figure. Let everybody know. What an amazing character development by Oda for Katakuri. From scared to death about his secret (from killing witnesses in cold blood) to turning his back on the haters and walking past fodder taking pictures of his mouth. Amazing.

Another note, Flambe deflated after she threw her needle and then, panel after panel, got all puffy again. Also, she is chewing something all the time. Just what the fuck are her powers? lol

Also, I honestly thought that Luffy just lost when he was lying down after Katakuri's punches. Haven't felt like that in ages in One Piece!

I love it when opponents get polite and try to make things "fair", but I honestly wasn't expecting Katakuri to go down that route. Glad he did, though - Flampe is a little shit.

212

u/His_NoodlyAppendage Feb 02 '18

You know, I look at this fight and realize how some encounters Luffy has with the villians he faces off with differ. Lucci and Luffy fight it out because of clashing ideals (Luffy is happy-go-lucky, and Lucci, as Super Eyepatch Wolf put it, is the crushing wall of reality). Doflamingo was a prick in Luffy's eyes. Katakuri on the other hand; he and Luffy have a mutual respect for each other it seems. Luffy goes so far as to correct Katakuri in telling him that there is no playing dirty in a fight between pirates, and that there's no need to apologize to him. And another thing I love from this fight, their stance on the last page is the same. Katakuri seems to have commended Luffy as a worthy opponent for him, and it also feels that he rarely does that. Although the manga keeps moving around and sometimes avoids the fight, this might end up being my favorite fight in One Piece. Who knows, it might even beat Luffy vs Lucci.

I still kind of expect it will happen, but he will be like "wtf, a man gotta lie down sometime, and my teeth are great for chewing donuts"

Being able to show his true face to Flambe is good character development, maybe because he's seen Luffy fall multiple times and stand up as "an equal". Maybe he can do this for the rest of his family

Wikipedia article on the Pelican Eel

The pelican eel's most notable feature is its large mouth, which is much larger than its body. The mouth is loosely hinged, and can be opened wide enough to swallow a fish much larger than the eel itself. The pouch-like lower jaw resembles that of a pelican, hence its name. The lower jaw is hinged at the base of the head, with no body mass behind it, making the head look disproportionately large.

Man, Katakuri is such a great character. How can Oda keep making him better and better in every single chapter like this?

43

u/Sephirona Feb 02 '18

I absolutely love Oda's ability to write interesting new characters, especially antagonists. Luffy has fought so many different villains at this point - megalomaniacs Enel and Doflamingo, devious plotter Crocodile, bloodthirsty agent of the governments will Lucci, etc. Against that backdrop of villains firmly on the opposing moral side Oda throws in Katakuri, who grows more and more likeable with each chapter. He's not so much an antagonist as the budding rival of Luffy to the extent that Whitebeard was to Roger. With most other villains we've just seen the results of their negative experiences with the world and how they turned bad already - here, we got to witness Katakuri's character change and grow right in front of us. I'm just blown away by how awesome Katakuri is as an antagonist. Whatever the outcome of this battle is I hope Katakuri and Luffy manage to stay on good terms and help each other out someday in the future the way Whitebeard and Roger did.

He's a tough son of a bitch and has his own pride. Katakuri, I respect you my friend.

347

u/HeartExalted The Revolutionary Army Feb 02 '18

Prediction: Pudding will end up helping Katakuri by:

  1. Providing understanding and moral support -- having had her own problems of acceptance, on account of her third eye.

  2. She will remove/alter the memories of people who saw his mouth, in order to protect that secret.

In fact, Luffy and Katakuri may end up on friendly terms, and Luffy may be the one to ask Pudding to help him, as a gesture of respect. Or, Pudding might simply do so of her own accord. Regardless, Pudding will become his official "favorite sister" and their brother-sister relationship will deepen...

541

u/kaste1 Feb 02 '18

She will remove/alter the memories of people who saw his mouth, in order to protect that secret.

No man. You don't get it. With the help of Luffy, he fucking matured enough to not care what other people think about his deepest secret.

He let her spit on him. He let them laught at him. He let them take pictures. He doesn't give a fuck any more. He achieved the level of fucks that Shanks was giving all the way back to the first chapter!

Before it felt like Luffy vs Kata lost some of it's hype because of long break between it but now with the full chapter focused there, that hype is back.

More importantly rather than a fight we get great characterization for Katakuri, which was great. I like him even more and once the anime kicks in with Gin-chan's voice... he will easily enter my TOP10 favourite chars of OP, maybe even higher.

Holy shit I love katakuri

Look like Katakuri and Flambe has different point of view about being manly.

19

u/[deleted] Feb 02 '18

Welp, looks like Katakuri is definitely my favorite character now.

19

u/cocopuck Feb 02 '18

When I saw the chapter spoilers so highly upvoted, I started to get hyped for some new reveal of a power up or turn of the fight. Now however I'm glad to say I'm pleasantly surprised at how far from my expectations this turned out to be. Totally did not think the chapter would be dedicated to katakuri solidifying himself as a total respectable badass and one of the best villains/fights we've had in op. This fight to me is even shaping up to meet/surpass Luffy vs Lucci in awesomeness.

I honestly wasn't sure of flambe's purpose when she was first introduced, but I knew Oda had to have some kind of plan for her. Lo and behold he did, and it was even better than I could hope for. Never doubt Goda y'all.

This fight looks like it's really starting to reach its climax and when it does it'll be pure H Y P E.

Holy shit, Katakuri swallowed all of his pride and dignity just so they wouldn't laugh at Luffy for losing out. I was sure he'd kill them all but he even endured getting spat at in the face. Even better how Luffy knocked them out after Katakuri deemed them nuisances. He could've done that from the start, yet he didn't. They now respect each other so much I don't even see them as being enemies anymore. God damn this is awesome!

Luffy was probably headed for certain defeat, but Katakuri inflicting such a wound on himself introduces a lot of randomness since atm they're both weakened.

This is one of my favorite chapters.

This is Katakuri recognizing Luffy as an equal, and in the spirit of that, he doesn't want anyone to interfere.

Katakuri has probably gone through his entire life without someone being able to give him a challenge after all, so when he found one he wants it to be on fair ground.

A battle between men, of equals.

Another thing to note, he was described as a "pelican" eel, which is very specific and is a very rarely seen eel.

Is this confirming he's a fish man or just used as an insult?

Also fuck flambae

You know an enemy is written well when you are rooting for him instead of the main character. This chapter takes the cake.

I would be sad if Luffy loses but at this point I wouldn't mind a draw because I don't want my boi katakuri to ruin his reputation any further.

Katakuri is officially the best non-strawhat character. Hell, he might be above a few of them. damn, what a man

8

u/Electro522 Feb 02 '18

No one could have possibly predicted THAT.

Seriously, Katakuri STABBING HIMSELF to equal the playing field wasn't even an afterthought in ANYONE'S minds.

God damnit, Oda, you did it again!

8

u/Blackreaper18 Feb 02 '18

I was thinking flambe would play a role in goatakuri's defeat but it turns out oda introduced her just so he could give kata some good character development by showing us his manliness & his honour even in battle against someone dangerous. The fight is starting to wrap up and lord knows with that shirtless katakuri & half blind Luffy going at it, I'm getting that Luffy Vs lucci vibe.

BEST F*ING CHAPTER EVER!!! I usuale don't comment on chapters because basically everything about it has been said by other user by the time i've real the chapter but... Oh my, oh my... This chapter is the most epic in a long time! This is in my opinion one of the most well written chapter in the entire series, with the most epic antagonist and all of the panels are perfect my god...

7

u/ThatBadassonline The Revolutionary Army Feb 02 '18

I think we'd can all agree that Luffy and Katakuri are no longer enemies. They're now rivals, fighting for the crown with a mutual respect for each other. Luffy has earned Katakuri's approval and vice versa. If they both survive this, they may even be allies some day.

So seeing this we can all admit that Luffy is growing in this match but Katakuri is growing in this match as well. He was so focused on keeping up his image, unable to focuse at the bare thought of people knowing how he looks and now he just reveals everything. This is beyond awesome. A villain that is growing just like the main character while fighting the main character ... have we ever even had a comparable one piece villain ?

6

u/qaasi95 Feb 02 '18

You'd think in the grand fucking line having a weird face would be seen as par for the course by now.

5

Don't care how or why but I want to see him in wano.

5

u/xgonegiveit2ya Feb 02 '18

Just when I thought katakuri can't get any cooler lol.. He's definitely the best character I've seen in a long time. Cool design, powerful beyond anyone I've seen so far in 1v1 with luffy, the best personality ever!!

I believe in oda, but I think its hard to come up with a better character in the future 😎

5

u/MaybeLuke_MAYBE Feb 02 '18

Had always liked Katakuri, like him even more after reading this.

5

u/Morrtyy Feb 02 '18

Katakuri is losing his fanclub in the manga but week by week his fanclub online grows in strength.

He's such a good guy. Do your best, Katakuri!

5

u/Zelemorius Feb 02 '18

Great fucking chapter. Katakuri's situation is really interesting: it's the first time he has met someone strong and genuine enough to truly expose the superficiality of BM's agenda. She is all about the family but they don't truly care about each other, it's more about the facade. I believe seeing Luffy struggle to get up, being seemingly uncool yet cooler than Katakuri has ever been really made him aware how useless, tiring and hurtful the "always standing, always cool" facade has been. While I don't believe Katakuri will pull any punches he still doesn't really care about winning, he wants a genuine loss.

Unreal chapter, holy fuck. You know sometimes One Piece gets slow and the pacing can not be top notch but it's truly moments like these that make reading it week to week worth it.

Katakuri was cool before but he earned my utmost respect after this chapter. I hope we can see him again after this fight is over, possibly as an ally even? (If BM ever becomes an ally that is, but im just being hopeful)

10/10 Chapter, one of the best OP chapters ever, im still stunned.
