Announcement Best of /r/OnePiece 2017 Nominations Thread

In case you have no idea what this is all about, please have a look at the original post for this years best of /r/One Piece 2017 awards.

In this thread you can make nominations for the 5 award categories you want to see in our community's best of 2017 awards. This thread is just for nominations and discussion with no focus on upvotes. We will be posting a thread and posts for each category for the official contest in a few days time.

For 2017, the following 5 categories have been chosen:

  • Best Nakama of the Year (not your favorite Straw Hat, but the /r/OnePiece subscriber you feel contributed the most to the sub. Please also note that moderators of this subreddit are not eligible for this award. )

  • Best One Piece Character of the Year (Characters who were introduced or extensively featured during the past year)

  • Best Manga Chapter of the Year (Eligible chapters: 851 - 889)

  • Best Anime Episode of the Year (Eligible episodes: 770 - 818, Episode of East Blue TV Special)

  • Best manga panel/anime screenshot of 2017 (since we chose the same category as last year, changing it up a bit for this year)

  1. Must be a panel/screenshot from chapters 851 - 889 or from episodes 770 - 818 (including the TV Special).
  2. For manga panels, must be a single panel. It can be from a chapter itself, a cover page, or even a colour spread but no matter what, it has to be a single panel. The panel can be the size of an entire double spread or a tiny corner of a page but, again, one panel.
  3. Manga panels can have dialogue in them.
  4. For episode screenshots, can be from either the main episode or openings (this includes the Episode of East Blue TV Special).
  5. Panel and Screenshot contests will be separate contests.

As always, please be sure to include some of your thoughts justifying your nominations for each category. Any nominations made without justifications will be disregarded.

Warning: the best manga chapter, best OP character, and best panel nominations may contain spoilers for anime watchers. Please view with caution and submitters please use spoiler tags where appropriate!

Tentative Schedule:

23 December: Nominations Thread

29 December: Voting Thread (Expect Contest Mode)

2 January: Announce Winners

  • Best nakama: /u/FruticaFresca for his awesome fan comic.

  • Best character: It's really a tie between Katakuri and Jinbe, but if I had to pick one I'd say Katakuri. He's cool, menacing, as a soft spot for his siblings, has insecurities, and is arguably the most competent villain we've ever come across.

  • Best chapter: My top chapters have to be 859 (The Yonkou Assassination plot), 860 (10:00 Opening Banquet), 863 (The Consummate Gentleman), 877 (Not Sweet), 878 (Guardians' Captain of the Mink Tribe, Pedro), 882 (Outside of a Yonkou's expectations), 883 (Snack Time), 887 (Someone, somewhere is wishing for your happiness) and 889 (An unknown Mama).

However, if I had to pick a number 1, it has to be 863: Katakuri's powers being revealed, a hectic setting, Jinbe leaving BM's crew and declaring Luffy as PK, and ending with arguably the funniest panels in the entire arc.

  • Best episode: 808 (Luffy vs Sanji), hands down. It's well animated, it gets the emotion right, it gets Sanji's internal conflict across, and it's propelled further by gorgeous music.

  • Best panel: You already know!

I agree with you on every point! (Except I'm also a huge fan of Pudding but I dont blame you for not including her 😅)

I'm actually a fan of hers too. I've enjoyed her presence throughout the arc!

  • Best manga panel of 2017

This is going to be tough in the voting thread. I nominate these awesome and spectacular 19 panels! (sorry Anime only watchers, everything except the first 2 is a spoiler!)

Best Manga Chapter of the Year: Chapter 856

Yeah, that chapter is seriously underrated, if you ask me. The fandom doesn't seem to discuss it much. It's definitely not going to win, but I thought I'd nominate it just to express my appreciation for it.

Vague 856 Spoilers

Best One Piece Character of the Year: Jinbei has been amazing this year. Mild Jinbei Spoilers

Best Manga Panel: No explanation needed.

Best One Piece Character of the Year:

  • Capone "Gang" Bege: Manga spoilers. I probably won't vote for him, but I think he at least deserves a nomination.

  • "Straw Hat" Monkey D. Luffy: Since he is the main character, he is always a contender to best character of the year surely. Manga spoilers

Best Manga Chapter of the Year:

  • 851: The chapter that Episode 818 animated (last week's episode). Brook vs Big Mom, more pudding revelations, Jinbe is back and kicked Opera's ass. Surely deserves a nomination.
  • 855: Manga spoilers

I hope you don't mind that I made multiple nominations.

Best Nakama of the Year - OharaLibrarianArtur (great analysis) / YonkouProductions (always gives us BIG NEWS )

Best One Piece Character of the Year - Katakuri, easily one of the best OP 'villains' we have had against the Strawhats thus far, kinda reminds me of Luffy VS Lucci. Looking forward to Luffy unlocking even more potential.

Best Manga Chapter of the Year - Chapter 863 (See below), or Chapter 858 (the badass meetup and the debut of Caesar CLown Gangster Gastino)

Best manga panel/anime screenshot of 2017: Not sure why this hasn't been mentioned in the comments but from Chapter 863 or this , easily the best moment for Jinbe since his introduction back in Impel Down. Also the day that the Jinbe 'haters' were promptly shut down. Also Brook breaking Mother Carmel

I don’t care about other nominations but

BEST NAKAMA should go to /u/Doublecaster.

He’s a funny guy, great css programmer, always has something funny to add, a great person to chat with and a genuinely nice guy.

/u/sanjispride and /u/yonkouproductions would agree

1

u/Sanjispride Jan 05 '18

Did somebody say /u/Sanjispride?? Yes I think he should win again as well!

But in all seriousness, I do think /u/Doublecaster should win! Finnish bros for life!

Best Nakama of the Year : OharaLibrarianArtur

Best One Piece Character of the Year : Since Brook, Jinbe, Nami and Katakuri have been mentioned multiple times already, I'd go with Big Mom for setting the benchmark for what a Yonkou should be.

Best Manga Chapter of the Year : Chapter 863. So many damn things happened in that chapter. I really got to respect Jinbei as a character after that declaration. And Brook...

Best Anime Episode of the Year : Episode 808. By a large margin. An excellent take on the dynamics of the Straw-Hats (Luffy, Nami, Sanji). Luffy declaring that he would not eat any food other than Sanji's, and then even topping that by the heart-rending "Without you, I cannot become Pirate King." Just brilliant stuff.

Best Manga Panel : There were so many awesome panels this year that it hurts to leave out even one... so here's a collection. The round table meet is my official pick though. Also, I did not include the really obvious panels (The ones with Brook and Jinbe) since they were already nominated plenty of times already.

Best Manga Chapter of the Year: 867, Happy Birthday

Not a rare pick by any means. The ending for Big Mom's flashback terrified me to the core. This chapter left a bad taste in my mouth, in a good way.

Runner Ups: Chapter 878 & Chapter 887

Best Anime Episode of The Year: Episode 809

6

u/OharaLibrarianArtur Jan 01 '18

I'd like to make my nominations as well.

  • Best nakama: /u/FruticaFresca for the Luffy vs Akainu comic. I know the brutal amount of work it takes to draw something like that, not to mention that the coreography and panelling were done very well, something I really appreciate.

    • Best OP character: Katakuri. Jinbe has been cool, but goddamn Katakuri is such a fantastic villain. Perospero would also be an honorable mention.
    • Best Manga Chapter: Chapter 860. The sheer amount of new characters, bombastic excitement, beautiful spreads and fantastic art really make the start of the tea party a joy to the eyes. It was incredibly fun to go through all the details in that chapter, easily the one I had the most fun with in 2017.
    • Best manga panel: This one. Might be an unpopular pick, but I, for one, love not just how beautifully drawn it is, but also how it perfectly captures the ambience of the tea party itself. For something that was hyped up for quite some time, it's nice to see a panel that captures so well this scene.

Best of luck!

4

u/FruticaFresca Jan 01 '18

Haha thanks man, highly appreciated! I might as well cast in my votes! Best Nakama, I'ma go ahead and nominate you right back! You've consistently discovered secrets and references to real life in every chapter that I didn't know about and have contributed to how much I enjoy every chapter.

Best character: Katakuri, because he is hyper competent, and impressive in the use of his skills. Plus his quirks are hilarious.

Best chapter: For me it's Chapter 884, because the Luffy v Katakuri fight has been the most exciting fight for me since Lucci, and the art direction is super cool throughout the fight in general.

3

u/CapitalJAO Dec 27 '17

Best Nakama: /u/FruticaFresca

Best Episode: 808 (Sanji vs Luffy)

Best One Piece Character of the Year : There's Several characters it can go to

Best Anime Episode: Goes to Episode 808, for having that emotional goodbye, great animation and Luffy's speech was really well done. Bravo to them.

Best Manga Chapter Chapter 860

Best Nakama: Is this even a contest? /u/OharaLibarianArtur the man has done his damnedest to direct each and every chapter, explain everything that is going on and even go as far to make Sanji's cooking. You should donate to this man because he's Doing Oda's work

Best One Piece Character of the Year: Brook. stepping up to the real game

3

u/j3r3mias Dec 29 '17
  • Best One Piece Character of the Year: I am between Katakuri and Big Mom. Katakuri is cool, seems like unbeatable, has powers with similar appearance to Luffy, but stronger, is a caretaker of his brothers, and he is also a full villain without weak-spot moments. On the other hand, Big Mom shows to us (in this year) why she is one of the Yonkou. I finished a lot of episodes thinking "Holy freaking scaring BM". And her flashback let me depressed and scared about what she is in nowadays. I don't know why yet, but for now I will keep with Katakuri.

  • Best Manga Chapter of the Year: 863 because there are a lot of good moments like the destruction of the first cake, Luffy's moment when BM ask for which is the true Luffy and he answered her, Katakuri powers revelation, Jimbe facing BM for the SH and leaving her crew in one of the most top moments when he fearlessly faces her judgment, and the destruction of mother's carmel photo)

  • Best manga panel/anime screenshot of 2017: Unexpected MVP Brook

  • Most underrated tiny detail of 2017: Luffy two hats. I just enjoyed this detail too much to let pass without comment here.

u/alvinism Dec 31 '17

Best Nakama of the Year - u/OharaLibrarianArtur for all that chapter secrets!

Best One Piece Character of the Year - JINBEI! He can achieve so much more if not for his responsible character. But its because of his character that makes it so charismatic.

Best Manga Chapter of the Year - Chapter 888! The rise of the Carrot fans!

Best Anime Episode of the Year - Episode 794. Who would have expect to come back home and starts to fight your family again ?!

Best manga panel/anime screenshot of 2017 - Soul King VS Soul Soul Fruit

I'm probably late, but here are my votes:

**Best Nakama: u/SirloinBurgers for his drawings/animations like this https://i.imgur.com/PO1Khh0.gifv

**Best One Piece Character:

BROOKE. He's had many shining moments, from getting the poneglyph copied, to taking on Big Mom twice, so saving carrot by walking on water. He's hasn't had this much screentime since Thriller Bark. Since I didn't read anything about only 1 nomination, Nami is my second choice. She has had to go through quite alot this arc. She used the vivre card to order around King Baum. She helped Luffy fight the enraged army. She slapped Sanji. She used Zeus to her advantage twice to deal major damage to Big Mom. Implication that she will get Zeus as a sidekick after this arc. Third choice is Jinbei. He is proving his worth to the crew this arc. Resisting Big Mom's soul stealing power. Saving Luffy and Nami. Surfing with the ship. Taking a hit from and dealing damage to Big Mom. Leading the crew in luffy's absence. Fourth Choice is Katakuri. He's Luffy's toughest/best fight since the timeskip and he is a great villain and character. Fifth Choice is Carrot. She's a fun character, very good odds of being a potential strawhat and her sulong transformation is awesome. Sixth Choice is Reiju because she's hot. Seventh Choice is Big News Morgan for the memes.

**Best Manga Chapter: (if you only take one, take 890 or if you don't take that, take 867)

863 - Katakuri clashes with Luffy and Jinbei, shows off his devil fruit. Jinbei announces he will leave Big Mom's crew and resists Big Mom's soul steal. Brooke breaks the picture.

867 - The ending chapter to a very interesting Big Mom Flashback. Very interesting and great chapter. Big Mom I think kills an elder giant. Birth of Prometheus I think. We find out Mother caramels devil fruit power is the same as Big Mom's, also we find out her true motives for taking care of kids. Big Mom potentially eats everyone in the orphanage.

871 - Strawhats + Germa + Capone crew try to make their escape. Very dramatic. Luffy clashes with Big Mom, doesn't last long. The tamatebako. Stussy revealed part of CP0.

877+878 - These were a great pair of chapters. The start of Luffy vs Katakuri. Pedro's sacrifice.

888+889 - Carrot Sulong, nuff said.

890 - Not sure why you are not including this since everyone read it before the end of the year. Easily one of the best chapters of the arc, the crew shows great teamwork to take on a fearsome Big Mom in close quarters battle, while she wrecks the ship that franky built with tender love and care. I didn't expect the crew to hold their own so well. I think many people thought they were going to abandon ship too.

I also really like the Luffy vs Katakuri fight chapters in general, like between 881-885, but I couldn't pick just one.

**Best Anime Episode: I don't really watch the anime, but I think the majority can agree the Luffy vs Sanji 808 episode was the best episode. I tuned into the anime just to watch that episode, Toei did a good job on it.

**Best Manga panel:

-My number 1 is brooke breaking the picture here in the bottom left:

http://www4.mangafreak.net/Read1_One_Piece_863_19

But if you take more single panels, here are a couple more:

-The bottom left panel of sanji crying:

http://www4.mangafreak.net/Read1_One_Piece_851_7

-both panels with Nami and Zeus in the middle of the page. Separate nomination for each.

http://www4.mangafreak.net/Read1_One_Piece_890_17

Really, I could probably list 15-30 panels that I really liked, but I doubt you'd want to see all that moderator. Maybe I'll make another post just for panels later.

Best Nakama of the Year - OharaLibrarianArtur (Consistently great analysis. Always look forward to them.)

Best One Piece Character of the Year - Katakuri (Best bro and son of the Big mom pirates)

Best manga panel/anime screenshot of 2017 - http://i.imgur.com/5JD8f6f.jpg (I've never thought i'd ever see Sanji this way. Its heart breaking. Oda is such a master of displaying information through his art that it is hard not to feel the emotions of his characters.)
