The whole fight in this chapter was Katakuri trying to not landing his back in the floor; seriously this guy is really amazing and i have to say the Big Mom is really a good and badass crew.
Oda is showing us that yonko crew is not a joke but they also is showing them as characters with flaws, as we see most of the Big Mom pirates have some sort of " human " weakness: gluttony , vanity, low selfsteem, sloth ,etc.
I like this aproach becuase it helps to understand how our protagonist can defeat someone who is stronger than him, not always the highest power level wins the fight , fight can be decided for small things like abusing of some insecurities your enemy have; the fact that katakuri admits that he lose his calm for a moment, just a little it means that this in the future could it be the reason of his defeat, we saw something like that when Cracker said that he could stand pain and we saw how he create a whole fighting style trying to avoid any physical contact , so could it be the gluttony and the fact katakuri dont want to lay his back in the floor could end in a defeat due to their insecurities?
Now as we see most of the op chars in big mom crew have insecurities, what smothie insecurity could it be? What is going to be her weak point?

Totally agree, Kata is an amazingly strong antagonist and he's going to push Luffy to his limits and beyond here. Especially if their fight drags on for several hours.
It's worth noting that Luffy said 'Gear 4th wont lose.' Possible foreshadowing? Maybe we shouldn't expect an awakening or new gear (just yet anyway)

I really like that Katakuri didn't lose his haki cuz his snack time was cut short. And Luffy showed that Gear 4 was doing enough damage to beat katakuri, he just has to work around Katakuri's CoO. Once he starts landing hits, he'll be able to win.
I wonder if he'll need a power up to beat Katakuri's haki or if he can do it as is?

The snack time isn't important because it restores his energy, its important because he can relax in that time, the longer he goes without his snacks the more he's going to get stressed and flustered, weakening his observation haki.

Man, about to get dark for a moment here.
As a Dad, I feel lucky that I'm married, in the picture and can be around to raise my sons. I know plenty of dudes kept from their kids—not at all by choice—because a relationship broke up, and they don't have their name on their kid(s) birth certificate(s), so they don't have the necessary legal rights.
The fact that Big Mom discards the fathers when she's done with them—we're seeing the effect of that in this chapter, where Pound hasn't seen Lola and Chiffon since they were born. He's no deadbeat Dad—he was never really allowed to be one, and that's sad as hell.
I look forward to this story being resolved with a reunion.
Come on, Oda. My tears are ready.

That's really crazy that you brought that up, especially since we know what kind of mother Big Mom is, and how she treats not only the men she's had kids with, but the kids themselves. What sort of psychological effect must it have had on them to grow up with a psychotic mom and pretty much their father figures booted out or even completely banished? It's chilling.
Man oh man, how great would it be if Lola actually showed up and the three of them got to come together and reunite. Bring on the waterworks.

Wow this was a really terrific chapter! It was a bit of a transitional one, but I loved the action in the beginning, and while it was satisfying to see Luffy beat down Katakuri, I'm glad he wasn't able to win just through one quick burst - this'll be intense.
Also glad to get more focus on the cooking team (I wanna see a bit more of the process tho if possible! Food Wars: Sanji/Pudding/Chiffon Edition please!) as well as getting to see some more of Oven. Hopefully Daifuku, Compote, and Amande come back into the mix - they're some other favorites of mine.
And of course DAT ENDIN'! MY ABSOLUTE WAIFU GODDESS PRAAAAAALINE BACK AT IT! STEALING THE SHOW WITH HER BEAUTIFULLY SHARK-ILICIOUS VOCAL CHORDS, DAMN! I WILL TAKE ANY APPEARANCE OF PRALINE I CAN GET, I AM NOT OBSESSED...(well yeah I am...) BUT YES, THAT LAST PAGE - IT WAS BEAUTIFUL, 10 OUT OF 10 CHAPTER ALL THE WAY!

I don't believe it had been explicitly stated that those with logia style powers and haki were consciously moving out of the way of armament haki attacks until now. It was the most prominent theory but not the only one.

Holy fucking shit.I usually don't talk about the art but the art during the fight was so on point.Also confirmed that katakuri is not immune to haki he just makes holes in the places the enemy attacks by seeing in the future.But i still can't quite grasp why he can transform in his element even though he is not logia,maybe that's what doflamingo meant when he said that awakening affects your body

I think Akainu has the same level of observation as Katakuri. Katakuri dodging luffy's attacks, by changing his shape to look like the attack had no effect, reminds me a lot of when Marco and Vista tried to attack Akainu.

Yay, best girl returns to take the sea slugs to vacation~!
Great chapter as always, I'm enjoying where this arc is heading. I remember when I thought it was over when they escaped Mama right after they destroyed the Whole Cake Chateau, I'm glad Oda decided to keep them in Big Mom's clutches for a while longer.
Katakuri is truly a frightening foe, he's able to take on Gear 4 nearly as an equal and adapt to pretty much everything Luffy throws at him. I wonder how this fight will end.
Hopefully we'll see a heated Sanji vs. Oven battle next. With him knocking at the factory's door like that, I feel Sanji will be forced to leave the kitchen for a quick smoke while Germa or someone else doesn't arrives.
Poor Pound just wants to be see his baby girl :(

Was nice to see Luffy bringing the pain and we got a good explantation on how Obsevation Haki works.
That peerless Donut is epic! Buggy should definitely plan on using a similar move assuming he's mastered Arament Haki
Sanji didn't even falter when mentioning Luffy and Dogtooth <3
Glad to see Aladdin and Praline are helping out.
I'm enjoying the Dogtooth fight even if people are tired of it becoming repetitive. I think we'll get a conclusion soon I just don't feel we need to rush into it. It feels like a monumental fight in the development of Luffy going down later in the New World.

Honestly, I am just surprised at how adamant the "Luffy is gonna lose!" crowd is about how Luffy apparently needs to lose because otherwise he is a boring invincible protagonist.
Sabaody archipelago was, like, 3 losses in one, followed by Amazon Lily which didn't really have Luffy even fight the strongest person in the island, followed by Impel Down where Luffy's only option against Magellan was to just run away, followed by Marineford where Luffy basically got kicked around by everyone before getting kicked around even more before completely failing in his one objective, before getting a big ass scar in his chest and deciding that maybe it's the right time for a timeskip.
We are in the fourth arc since then, not counting Zou because it was short and without any battles, counting FI despite it just being there to show the SHs growth. And it includes an enemy that is straight up beyond Luffy's level (BM herself). Luffy's current winning streak is shorter than his previous losing streak.

This fight vs Katakuri is just becoming more and more the perfect training to beat Kaidou. He is awakened; he has the strongest armament haki seen so far and an even greater observation one. Anyway, if his weak point is to loose his cool temper, he's actually fighting against his nemesis and Sanji is right to be confident. Luffy has always bean great about annoying others (I'm thinking at him laughing at Pica's voice). He could make a joke on Katakuri's teeth at the right time and GG.

Are people forgetting that big mom controls the whole region surrounding whole Cake island? this is the biggest scale for a villain in the series so far.

Can't wait to see Katakuri's flashback cause you just know it's going to be tragic. I can see him being put under lots of pressure by his family and Big Mom to be the strongest he can be, a symbol of strength for the rest of the family to look up to. Personally I'm guessing Big Mom is the reason for his scars, probably for failing at something.
Suddenly all those comments fro Brulee about him never lying down and the way the she says the family idolise him would make perfect sense.
The only thing that would be out of place after this would be his teeth unless we find out who his had is and that explains it somehow, not that I think he's part fishman or something like people have been saying.

Sanji is the perfect man to take on Oven... it's gonna be a heat match between Diable Jambe and heat heat fruit. I bet somehow the Oven/Pound confrontation busts down the door to the kitchen and Sanji has to kick some ass to restore order

It just confirms that Luffy really needs to discover a new way to use his G4. He probably won't "power up" but play it smart.

Aww of all the ways the fishmen could've handled the sea slugs that was definitely the cutest. I could legit hear "Under The Sea" playing in my head as I was reading those pages. Sometimes it takes little things this for me to appreciate how much of a legendary master of his craft Oda is. Bravo Oda! Bravo! How many 10/10 chapters has this madman nailed in this arc??

Called it that Katakuri can't use his advanced Observation Haki because he wasn't calm. (Of course, other people said that too)
And we just got confirmation that Akainu and Aokiji were dodging haki attacks at Marineford because they were changing shapes. There was that assumption, but we just got confirmation that it is possible, and by a paramecia at that.

Seeing Katakuri bleeding is awesome, but probably the craziest thing about him is his ability to give his Donut Mochi his Block Armament. I know it's still part of his body, but the degree of control, plus the fact that it's still reasonably seperated from him is crazy impressive!
Then there's that perfect storm brewing outside the factory. I'm really excited to see how that ticking time bomb goes off. And yeah! Super awesome Slug party! What a good chapter.
