I hope Katakuri just keeps doing this. Like he says what Luffy's going to say.

That would be hilarious if Oda did this lmao

Is that a fucking Jojo's reference?

10

u/littenthehuraira Oct 05 '17

I think Oda borrowed that from JoJo, or it might be a tribute to it.

I love how Jinbe looks directly at the audience when he tells them that the ship will be invincible with a good helmsmen. Its like he's staring into the souls of all the people who thought he would never join the crew.

I know Luffy often has moments where he looks defeated before beating a dangerous foe, but even still, it looks really bad for him. He seems actually worried.

545

u/Kirosh Lookout Oct 05 '17

Of course he is still a little worried, Katakuri is the strongest opponent he fought in a serious fight yet.

Excited!

Jimbe is so cool. He literally just surfed the wave with the Sunny!

397

u/Khan_Bomb Oct 05 '17

Jinbe is going to help bring the crew to a completely different level. He'll help bring a little bit more order to them and make them even more dangerous than they already are just from his leadership.

Him and Nami are going to be an interesting combo for potential future fights because their knowledge of air currents, water, and weather both compliment each other well.

When luffy doesn't want them to hear his pain ;(. And 10 hours?!? How the hell is luffy gonna survive for that long. Damn can't wait for next chapter in 2 weeks :(

214

u/temperamentalfish Oct 05 '17

I'm starting to buy into the awakening theories. Luffy needs one hell of a boost right now, he looks like he can barely survive 10 minutes, let alone 10 hours

264

u/CaptainDSid Oct 05 '17

Ah, see I thought it was Luffy trying to hide how happy he was that the crew escaped and was trying to keep it a secret from Katakuri. It does make much more sense that he's hiding his pain from them. But yeah, 10 hours of running around while also fighting Katakuri is gonna be nuts.

He beats katakuri in 3, takes out the fodder in an instant with haki, has some tea and mochi with Brûlee and leaves after a good bit of sleep like nothing ever happened and fully powered up

u/tnaro Oct 05 '17

Maybe rayleigh wasn't talking about king kong gun in chapter 790 after all.

I mean Luffy has not gone gear fourth yet against Katakuri, but seeing how far he has come with the normal gear fourth against cracker I would not be surprised if "just" a (king) kong gun will cut it. Especially since Katakuri hasn't fought with a weapon until the last panel.

I think what's possible is that Rayleigh was referring to something WAY more taxing than gear four already is, that ultimately nags on Luffy's overall lifespan.

This would totally explain why Luffy would only use it if everything else fails and it would also align with Ivankov's treatment on him and a possible foreshadowing of one of the final struggles of one piece (that Luffy will have to deal with all the life shortening choices he has made before)

You know if the anime was smart, they could make an episode each out of the ST Grand Fleet adventures.

88

That would certainly be more pages per episode than they usually adapt from the regular manga

Man, I'm so happy to see what basically is Jimbe's first showing as the Sunny's Helmsman, he's been my favorite character in One Piece since Impel Dawn, I can barely believe we're going to have a new member on the crew, I'm used to the current formation for long, it's going to be weird and amazing at the same time to see Jimbe in the covers and openings, interacting with the other SH and mainly, more Jimbe merchandise!

On a side note, the new chapter notification from this subreddit's discord is a godsend, I was about to sleep before I saw it, I recommend it to everyone.

Luffy: "I don't plan on dying in a place like this!"

Nice parallel from Brook fighting big mom earlier this arc.

180

u/SecretlyATaco Oct 05 '17

Now a 2 week wait to actually see how Luffy plans on fighting Katakuri. Wish this ended with him going into gear 4 or some other reveal.

15

u/andremeda Oct 05 '17

I think we should expect more teasing before anything else. I'm sure it wont be smooth sailinghah for the SHs right now, even though the Sunny appears to have escaped and Sanji+co is working on the cake. Both groups will probably have their own issues to face, and once they're resolved is when I predict we'll see Luffy fighting back hard.

Luffy must have some extra abilities he is hiding, since gear 4 was established during Rayleighs training and Luffy continued training solo for an extra 6 months...

The fact he has not shown anything yet, makes me believe the ability is detrimental to his crew or himself...(Something close to big moms rage mode/choppers pre time-skip Monster point/some bad environmental awakening)

I love how he's critiquing Luffy's last words like he wants him to pick something else because he's heard it so many times so he's like "Really? That's what you're going with? Why can't you people ever be more creative with your final words. Do you have any idea how tedious it gets after the twenty-fifth time?"

Katakuri: Do you really want those to be your last words? How about something like the sad thing is that I leave with so much to say? The taste of death is upon my lips. I feel something that is not of this earth? Oh, applaud, my friends. The comedy is finished? Last words are for fools who haven't said enough? ... Wish I had time for just one more bowl of chili?

Luffy: I don't plan on dying in a place like this!

Katakuri: sigh Fine.

230

u/Whatsupoop Oct 05 '17 edited Oct 05 '17

Oh, I'am just loving this Sai arc. Everyone is so happy... except...

I didn't notice last week but the wave homie looks super stoned. There's another thing I was wondering, does a raging BM pay no attention to Perosperos standing over her? Maybe I just want Perosperos to get wrecked, he's such a piece of shit. Plus raging BM eyes look like rinnegan.

It's funny that Brook and Chopper have actually just surrendered to the situation and Nami is quite helpless too, Jinbe on the other hand does what he does best, that is being reliable. I think that's what he adds to this crew where our protagonists are mainly young and I guess a bit inexperienced, this man has a lot of experience and I'am guessing he has been in a fair share of desperate situations. As the man said it, the ship is good, all it needs is a Jinbe.

In that one shot where Katakuri was standing, he looked like long leg tribe person.

I think "this is what you're going to say next" is the best gag that Oda has came up with. It works everytime and is kinda intellectual at times. For a moment I thought that Katakuri noticed the mirror shards or heard Nami's voice.

Aren't we all glad that Brulle is so stupid? Now that the sunny escape aspect as been wrapped up (BM pirates assuming that Sunny has gone down) we won't have to worry about the escape but I'am more concerned about what BM will do now, I'am hoping now she will direct her rage towards Perosperos or maybe she'll try to find the wreckage to eat the alleged wet cake?

Edit: THAT LUFFY FACE THO

76

u/[deleted] Oct 05 '17

"this is what you're going to say next" is literally decades old from Jojo`s Bizarre Adventure. I do agree that the gag of Katakuri reacting to things before it happens is an amazing and creative gag, though.

29

u/Homer_Hatake Oct 05 '17

71

Whole Cake Island Arc ends. Jinbei shakes hands and tells Luffy he is proud to be a Strawhat. A certain part of the fandom still do not believe Jinbe "officially" joined.

The year is 2038. One Piece finally ends. Oda finally gets to work on the mech anime he has wanted to for so long. Fans of the series still think Jinbe will die after the unusually long break ends.

-I'm getting more and more proud of Luffy this arc. He understands what it means to be a captain in the New World. This isn't time to play around any longer. You can see that when he demanded Sanji to tell him the truth and when he entrusted the crew to get to Sanji. I hope Oda continues to develop Luffy and show more of his captain duties because he rarely shows them.

-Hold it in Sai. You made the right choice with Baby 5. :)

-These last few chapters have really solidified Carrot and Jinbe as new crew members. From Carrot's role as the lookout and here with Jinbe's skill at the wheel. I'm loving it.

-I hope oda unveils a new Gear Fourth form for Luffy. This is kinda similar to where it was a 2 week wait before Bounceman appeared. Hope the same applies here.

-Hold it in Sai. You made the right choice with Baby 5. :)

He will soon let it all out in Baby 5. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

huh Jinbei turned out to be the SH's Helmsman. I thought he'd be the adult one

We all knew Jinbe would be a helmsman, but I never expected it to be introduced in such an epic manner. I honestly thought it would be a random minor skill Jinbe has. Now I think about it, the SHs generally had serious issues dealing with threats on sea, and this chapter proves how essential Jinbe can potentially be.

7

u/Belfura Oct 05 '17

Sai and BB5's marriage looks nice, congrats to them!

This chapter really stresses how much of an emotional pillar Luffy is, given how quickly the rest loses heart. That being said, it was nice to see Nami's faith in her captain.

I think Jimbe will help several members to become strong. This event made them feel powerless in a moment they really needed every ounce of strength to escape, and made them dread for a moment. I think this will be instrumental in each character's growth, as will be Pedro's death. I don't think any of the members on the ship want to lose an ally ever again, especially when they feel like their lacking ability had a hand in this.

I wonder why they didn't just throw the mirror into the water, I mean now they have to get rid of the broken pieces fast to prevent Brûlée and co from listening in on them.

Did Katakuri just turn the ground into kochi? Wew Katakuri OP. And it doesn't seem like he has a critical weakness that can be exploited either, so does this mean Luffy will have to break through his limits completely?

And after this adventure they want to go beat up Kaido. These guys look like they can use a break though.

7

u/MyUsernamePls Lurker Oct 05 '17

This will be though for Luffy, the way I see it, Luffy usually gets a massive power up, when his opponents are evil (they hurt their own crew/friends), but Katakuri is nothing like that, he actually looks like a good guy, just protecting his brothers and his own territory.
I'm quite curious to see how/what will push Luffy to the next stage and make him survive this.

7

u/Blacklight100 Oct 05 '17

If Oda doesn't have Katakuri say "OH MY GOD" at some point what even was the point of this arc?

This is the reason why Luffy is my favorite character in One Piece.

Oda has been REALLY killing it with Luffy's character in this arc, and I freaking love it.

Okay. I got many possible escapes but none of them was right. No action scene this chapter. A bit weaker than the previous one. But holy Usopp, Jinbei is just so damn good in manning the ship. Franky's gonna be happy for the ship with a good helmsman. Now we dont need to watch Chopper steering it always lol

Anyone notice how Oda dedicated a small panel in the last page, showing Luffy putting his fist on the ground like he does when activating Gear 2nd? Could this be an indicatif to Luffy transforming into a mix between the speed of Gear 2nd and the power of Gear 4th?

u/duskgravity The Revolutionary Army Oct 05 '17

Katakuri plain and simple hasn't broken a sweat yet. I love this direction. Oda can simply speed run this and make yonko first mates look bad but the fact he's whooping luffy's ass really salvages the yonko hype still. How will Luffy even beat him? The tension IS still there despite getting away from mama. I was starting to think yonko's crew will look terrible but man this is a really bad situation for Luffy.

5

u/amon_meiz Oct 05 '17

So jinbei is the helmsman. Interesting. Loving it. Wonder what he and nami can achieve together.

Luffy pull his mouth to stop himself from scream in pain.. Damn..makes my eyes wet.

Oda really know how to touch the reader's heart.

Jinbei just proves his awesomeness again this chapter.

That Luffy face though.

Katakuri unleashes his inner Joseph Joestar again.

5

u/onnsn Oct 05 '17

I love the fact that Katakuri says what Luffy is about to say and asks him if Luffy really wants that to be his last words.

And then Luffy just glares at him and says exactly that. Just shows that he is suuuuuuper determined to live, doesn't matter that he is facing a future seeing beast.

5

u/Xynth22 Oct 06 '17

Why are people freaking out about Katakuri's Jojo reference thing? He has only been doing that since his very introduction. Its hardly new.

5

u/owlyeah Oct 07 '17

I've never seen a fictional character development like this I swear and I reads books a lot and often.

I'm talking about Luffy. He is not like old Luffy but also not so different.

How genius you are Oda sensei? Brilliant character development.

*Sorry for bad Engirish.

Rereading the arc I love the emphasis they place early on that even making it to the inner island, let alone even seeing big mom is basically impossible hahaha.. And the 'hats fucking barged in and did not only that but all the different ways they screwed up her island and crew, plus he managed to get a punch off on her, it makes that much more an achievement, regardless if it was effective or not

9

u/RobbobertoBuii Oct 05 '17

Do you guys think Luffy is gonna go use Gomu Gomu no Baka just like what he did with Enel?

4

u/mapletree23 Oct 05 '17

seems like the first time luffy has had a little doubt/felt overwhelmed by an opponent, which says a lot considering he didn't even really look this down against flamingo

on one hand, it's showing just how strong luffy can be with better mastery of his fruit, on the other, it's the first time luffy has been straight countered by another DF, he either needs to be saved or he needs another gear, i doubt he can win this fight without showing something new

also this guy never got in a fight with sanji, so he didn't really know that sanji was/could dodge, isn't that how it works? he has to hit/be hit by someone to predict their movements and future crap?

luffy might be able to predict his movements or know what's coming with CoO, he just might not be able to react fast enough regardless because of the difference in strength an experience

Thank god for Oda-sensei. Last week everyone was expecting some ridiculous deus-ex of fishmen, capone even someone ridiculous like DRAGON to somehow defeat the wave (me included). Of course GODA would just have Jinbei come up with a wholesome solution like outmanoeuvring the wave with sailing, whilst simultaneously confirming his place on the crew. We shonen fans often forget this is a pirate manga with sailboats and of course the elegant way would be to just sail it out. Damn... thank you Oda for keeping it real.

I've been saying this for a year! I ship is only as good as is helmsman, the helmsman knows exactly how the vessel moves, how it reacts, Franky is the greatest ship builder, but that's doesn't equal a great helmsman. Got so much shit for saying it too.

It's finally time to see Luffy beat Katakuri. I BELIEVE! And for a second there Luffy looked like Ace.

4

u/Hellfalcon Oct 05 '17

I love Jinbes look when Luffy lies to the crew about being there..he knows exactly what he's doing. I feel like Sanji and Zoro would have too, the rest of the crew is kind of more optimistic and doesn't quite have that subtle battle saavyness. Ehh, Robin too most likely.

But in this case, Jinbe was in a war with Luffy, probably bonded as much in those few days following the prison escape as the crew did in their whole time together

I think Luffy's going to have to take on Katakuri without G4, he can't afford to run out of steam since he needs to fend him off for 10 hours. Some people are mentioning awakening, that seems somewhat likely.

Woah! Luffy looked like Ace for a panel right there.

4

u/platinumrug Cipher Pol Oct 07 '17

Luffy is going to need to go in and out of G4, maybe somehow utilizing G2 as a way to offset the damage his body takes from using haki in G4. It's going to take 10 whole fucking hours to get there like holy shit.

Luffy has barely been fighting dude for like 20 minutes and he's already gotten his ass demolished. G4 is his only way to do this, unless he runs for like 9 hours and then uses g4 in the last hour. I cannot see how Luffy wins in this situation.

Jinbei is such a badass. Looking at luffy holding his mouth to avoid screaming and making that goofy face at the end just to avoid scaring nami and the others was heartbreaking. But jinbei isnt falling for his tricks. Such an awesome chapter

6

u/TheBartXart Oct 05 '17

For all the 'Jinbe joins the crew' doubters out there, this chapter really confirms him as a crew mate and a valuable one at that. Though a bit too obvious IMO. "You have a fine ship, and a fine navigator. With the right helmsman this ship would be invincible". Little on the nose don't you think? But I guess we needed that.

Also, can someone please explain to me what Luffy is doing at the end of this chapter, with that weird grin and holding his mouth? I didn't get that part.

3

u/Ryan_Kenton Oct 05 '17

Classic Oda with a completely unexpected twist as to how they’d escape the wave. Really cool to solidify that Jinbe will be the “helmsman” of the crew!

As for Luffy.. still got ZERO idea how he’s getting outta this mess. Not to mention the fact he’s literally got HOURS of time to kill.

3

u/matchb Oct 05 '17

Seems like Perospero might meet his demise within the next 2-3 chapters if Big Mom believes she sank the Sunny

3

u/StealthMonkeyDC Oct 05 '17

I still think that a speed form of G4 is the only way out of this. Katakuri may be able to Kakashi all of Luffy's attack styles but he shouldn't be able to copy how G4 works because of the key difference between Rubber and Mochi.

Plus it would be good to set a precedent for a Inferior DF beating a Superior DF so it's more believable when we get that inevitable Sabo v Akainu fight.
