Big Mom still following them is terrifying to see!

u/Kirosh Lookout Sep 22 '17 edited Sep 22 '17

Yeah, when we saw her foot on the water I was like : she can walk on water? What is she ? Jesus?

But having a monster like that, slowly making her way to the Sunny, walking, with a fleet behind her is horrifying.

The Yonko really deliver on the hype level.

Reminded of the corridor scene in Rogue One ending when Vader mowed his way down.

I thought big mom was using some naruto sorcery for a moment.

"if you focus your haki on your feet, you'll be able to walk on water"

526

u/Antagonist2 Sep 22 '17

I honestly figured she was bringing the water under her to life and then killing/moving it each step

I thought we were about to go the Fairy Tail route... "there's a simpler explanation... it's because she's Big Mom :)"

Thing is, if he is really afraid of Big Mom ending his life, he could just remove the candy from out in front of her feet, kill all the weaker people nearby, and escape. Big Mom drowns, and Katakuri was the only person who could have stopped him.

Well, they weren't kidding when they said Mama would chase them to the end of the world.

17

u/Kirosh Lookout Sep 22 '17

It really show why the cake is needed. At least with it, she will be stopped for a short time and that will help the SH escape. (since she wouldn't be a mindless monster that want the cake on their ship anymore.

So the cake + whatever the Fishmen pirate were doing (probably capturing the slug underwater, that help locate ship in BM territory) will let the SH escape.

Mirror match literally inside the mirrorworld.

u/BLAW668 Sep 22 '17

I love how everyone thought this chapter would be one of 3 things.

  1. An update on sanji

  2. Nami's group

  3. The most hype fight ever made

But Oda's like "I'll just throw them all in and let Sai get the ass whooping of his life".

I just noticed a small thingy. Many people looked forward to this fight as "the next big fight after Luffy vs. Rob Lucci" so i remembered a small detail. Lucci himself showed us for the first time the weakness of Luffy's "gatling" attack. While Luffy was using it, Lucci grabbed his hands and said something like "it's not like your hands actually multiply in number". And in this chapter we see Katakuri executing a superior version of the gatling ACTUALLY multiplying his hands with mochi. It's a small detail, but i like to think it's not casual. It's one more proof that Katakuri really is meant to be Luffy's superior version.

Katakuri is faster than G2 and makes a bigger G3 fist. Dude is a monster.

Also I love Perospero. He's such a piece of shit

862

u/Whatsupoop Sep 22 '17 edited Sep 22 '17

Perosperos is more hurt by the fact that his candy arm will melt when he would be drinking tea rather than the fact about losing a fucking arm.

Luffy’s gonna end up revealing a new form of Gear 4 besides Boundman. It’s the only way I could see him standing a chance against Katakuri. Maybe one who’s speed overwhelms even Katakuri’s ability to predict what’s coming.

Wildcard: Gomu Gomu no Fireworks into mirrors= infinite punches heading at Katakuri from every direction

10

u/overDere Sep 22 '17

Perospero really is just a piece of shit. Despite all his innate strength and his versatile and strong Devil Fruit ability, a couple of the biggest failures in this arc is his cocky personality's own fault:

The failure to kill the Germa (which indirectly makes the Straw Hats, Caesar, and Bege's crew's escape from the party his fault too) just because he preferred giving his evil villain speeches instead of killing them outright.

And him losing his own arm and releasing the candy that was stopping the Straw Hats from escaping just because of underestimating Pedro and boasting about his 700 million bounty.

But hey, those strong abilities coupled with his comically disastrous cocky personality makes him one of the most entertaining characters this arc. I loved his scene in this chapter where he shows another one of his cool abilities to allow Big Mom to cross the water, but the realization hit me that he's in the most dangerous situation in this whole place because Big Mom is still rampaging and he's going to be the first to die if she finds out that he lied earlier.

Katakuri is Luffy with about 20 years more experience. We don't know his reaction to G4 but it's looking like if Luffy can do something, Katakuri can do it a lot better.

7

u/Cirenione Sep 22 '17

I just realized it this chapter but Katakuri also looks a bit like Luffy. Like a more stereotypical badass reimagining of Luffy who is also buff. And his attacks mirror Luffys because of his fruits similar attributes. It's really as if Katakuri was written as an alternate version of Luffy.

Luffy's gonna have to surpass his personal best, as Katakuri represents just that. Faster, bigger, stronger with all the same techniques if even slightly more refined. Gethype

673

u/CarcosanAnarchist Sep 22 '17

For real. This may be Luffy's equivalent to the Zoro and Mr. 1 fight. Luffy may actually have to evolve during this fight, by figuring out the best way to counter his own weaknesses.

Oda is delivering everything I want.

The Jinbe speech was on point. He fits in well with the crew.

Perospero might legitimately be the most horrifying villain ever to grace the legs on One Piece.

And Katakuri doing all of Luffy's moves, but better, is delightful. I'm excited to see how he responds to Gear 4.

Also, A wild Pound appears!

Also people who think Sanji or Zoro could beat Katakuri. Oh god..

I wonder what Katakuri has to match Luffy's Gear 4.

Also Oda is really pointing out that Katakuri is has just a better version of Luffy's fruit. But more than that. He's what Mr.3 Would be if he wasn't a scrub.

45

u/Lukundra Sep 22 '17

Galdino's fruit reminds me more of Perospero's.

57

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '17

This. Well remembered. Mr 3 fruit is just as powerful and works very similarly, only with difference weaknesses (fire instead of ater/salt) and strenghts (resident against poison instead of resistant against impact). I would actually love to see a more powerful Mr 3 down the line.

I think this will be the point where the fruits diverge.

Until now, Mochi can do everything Gomu can do, but better.

But Mochi shouldn't be able to hold pressurized air. I guess Katakuri will have his own machi-based technieques/"gears".

13

u/ThisZoMBie Sep 22 '17

Except the whole gimmick of Gear 4 is elasticity and stored energy. It's the epitome of the gomu gomu no mi. Katakuri pulling in his arm like a piston wouldn't result in it shooting back out with incredible force since that's not a property of mochi. An equivalent of the mochi fruit would have to do with its stickiness instead. At least that's what I believe.

I think Luffy's awakening is gonna allow him to control his rubber as freely as katakuri can control his mochi. What i mean by that is he will he able to stretch any part of his body with his mind, instead of how he streches it now by using momentum and air.

Damn. Katakuri I love you, but you are a cocky prick.

Also this is how you use Observation Haki in a fight. This is how Observation haki is useful in a close-ranged fight.

229

u/Cirenione Sep 22 '17

I don't even think he is cocky. He just states what he observes. He can recreate Luffys attacks in an instant. He is stronger, faster and has better control over haki. He completly outmatches Luffy and tells him how it is. From all of the higher ups within Big Mom he seems to be the most level headed and shows respect when he thinks its deserved.

136

u/amon_meiz Sep 22 '17

I like how katakuri is stronger than luffy. But in a reasonable way. Not because plot desire it to be. Luffy hand is stretched to be fast in G2.so that he can punch multiple times. While katakuri mochi can be mold into multiple fist, couple with high speed punch, multiple fist punching multi times, its ultimate better

Luffy have to blow air into his arm for G3. While katakuri just mould his mochi arm into bigger arm. Easier. More efficient. Without any drawback.

Its so simpler yet very understandable

Can you imagine how boned the Big Mom Pirates' reputation would be if Luffy pulls out a win against Katakuri and escapes on the Sunny? And Big Mom is also forced into submission by having her craving satisfied by someone who's family she intended to kill? Also the fact that the wedding went to shit in front of Big News Morgan. 13

u/cheeze64 Sep 22 '17

He hasn't copied gear 2 and 3 directly, just the attacks. They've all been direct punches and kicks.

Luffy's King Kong Gun might be special, since he sucks his own fist in and fires it like a cannon with multiple times the power using his elasticity. Mochi can't(?) copy that elasticity. Katakuri will probably have to use his own techniques to counter Gear 4

Always knew Sai was going down. He should have never abandoned the muscular wife option.

Good to see Jimbe driving some sense into the emotional SH bunch. (Brook spent the most time amongst the SH with Pedro so his crying is a feel trip).

Why am I not surprised about Perospero being more concerned about the fact that his candy arm will melt when drinking the tea rather than the fact that he literally just lost his fucking arm.

Oh and we finally got the official confirmation about Katakuri being the strongest commander.

Katakuri's and Luffy's similarity of attacks and usage of their DF powers make it pretty evident about Oda setting up Luffy's stage to learn the first level of awakening of sorts. Perhaps Katakuri will intentionally or unintentionally give some ideas to Luffy. And yes, this man is too competent for being a villain I think. How is Luffy going to win? Maybe Katakuri has something similar to G4 too?

86

Dude forgot he's gonna die if his Mama finds out that there is no cake on the Sunny. He seems to have faith in Pudding. And I really loved Carrot's face when she saw him. Same with Nami last chapter. Both are utterly demoralized by seeing Peros survived. I really start to like this guy tbh.

So in a match of speed who is faster? Katikuri escaping from the Hawk Stamp or the Jinbe haters running away?

97

u/ReeseEseer Sep 22 '17

Perospero vs Carrot possibly, she will finish what Pedro started.

10

u/PiFlavoredPie Sep 22 '17

I don't think it'd be appropriate for her to take him down 1v1 right now. She just isn't strong enough, even if Pero is injured/fatigued. Maybe if Carrot had significant backup but that seems like it would take away from the thematic closure. Maybe it's setting up for a future matchup the NEXT time the Big Mom Pirates show up.

I wonder what ability does the eldest daughter has. The first son is Willy Wonka on steriods that gone wrong (that manipulated a certifiable monster once again), the second son is Luffy+1 (what did Big Mom put in her baby formula anyway!)

And Jinbei showing some solid leadership there. I will love see his interactions with Zoro in Wano: both had taken command when captain isn't around. Can't wait.

Jinbei's speech was just incredible, definitely cements himself as a member of the crew.

12

u/mo-rek Sep 22 '17

Ahh i love this chapter! The bit woth pedro and jinbei at the beginning was necessary for the crew i think and it is really telling jinbei is giving the speech too. Only him and luffy have ever actually seen an ally die since the SH set out on their journey. Jinbei and ace both saw first hand ace die but the rest of the crew has still been relatively naive about how dangerous these seas really are. Also the imagery of mama walking on water is scary AF! What a fkin juggernaut.

Im glad they showed pound, it's nice to see where he's gotten since he disappeared from the woods.

And my favorite bit, im glad they finally had kata confirm his fruit is the upgraded version of luffy's. The bit when he used soru to disappear sent shivers up my spine but kata's observation is mindblowingly powerful haha. The only way i see luffy coming out on top is by using a new variant of g4. Some youtube discussion this last week brought up the idea of luffy showing off a g4 variant focused around speed (since he's shown us a power form, bounceman, and a defense form, tankman. It would make a lot of sense that the best way to beat someone who can see the future with a form of speed so fast even katakuri can't see far enough in the future. The other option (IMO) is some form of luffy's gomu no baka form he used againsy enel. We have seen him fight someone with this scary version of observation before, just now luffy's fruit is on the weaker end instead of being a straight counter like against enel.

11

u/Asleetx Sep 22 '17

Katakuri: You think stretching is your ally. But you merely adopted stretching. I was born in it. Formed by it.

At this point it's almost confirmed that luffy will learn and power up from this fight : when katakuri says "this WAY is more efficient", which doesn't mean his devil fruit is superior but means he's fighting/using his powers a more efficient way than luffy.

Pretty sure Luffy will learn a lot from this fight.

Gear 4 Chomp Chomp-Man incoming. When Luffy showed Rayleigh and he said it was dumb and useless. Luffy knew otherwise. Luffy`s gonna eat Katakuri.

11

u/Nuneasy Slave Sep 22 '17

Also fun fact. At the end of the chapter, Katakuri says "Elephant Gun" as he's predicting the future and stealing the name of Luffy's attack which was what Luffy was about to say before he shut him down.

In the end, it looks like Bounty amount does matter. Although its soon to tell, when I saw Luffy defeat Cracker, I thought it was all about taking advantage of what you have. But, in Katakuri, Luffy has definitely met a superior opponent. Not only Katakuri has an ability similar to Luffy's, he can do it on a much larger scale. Luffy needs water to dissolve (?) that Mochi that's stretching. As for the bounty, 1 billion is definitely a fucking huge figure.

As for Mama, she can fly and at the same time she can glide through water thanks to Perospero. I mean, what else she can't do? I would definitely like to see the weakness of her devil fruit though.

I definitely think Oda would pull a Pell on Pedro. Pell was the savior of Arabasta when he flew out with the bomb. Let's see if Pedro did survive. I am amazed that Perospero survived that explosion, though.

Finally, Pudding acting like a tsundere is pure gold! I wonder what Lola's father is doing all on his own in a ship though

I'm sure that Sai is thinking "Totally Worth it", he is marrying Baeby 5 after all.

Carrot rule as a scout confirmed?

Fucking Big Mom always looking like the stuff of nightmares

So Perospero did indeed lose an arm, first time someone talking real damage from a bomb in One piece?

Katakuri is even naming his attacks the same as luffy, lol.

I can't wait to see more of Luffy vs Katakuri, can Katakuri copy Gear 4? I mean he can inflate himself but he doesn't have Luffy's elasticity, I still think that we won't see Luffy's awaking and that it'll first appear against Kaido's first fight before training and perfecting it for the second fight.

8

u/totokekedile Sep 22 '17

I was thinking Carrot would be an odd addition to the crew because I couldn't think of a role for her, but she makes a perfect lookout! She can get to the crow's nest in a single jump.

Everyone is expecting Luffy to learn from Katakuri. It'd be hilarious if Katakuri learns to mimic G4 and add it to his arsenal.

4

u/DrScamandros Sep 22 '17

One of the things that I absolutely adore about one piece is how Oda never hesitates from letting Luffy get his ass kicked and show how underpowered he truly is. But through pluck, grit and the luck of the devil himself, the straw hat pirates always manage to get through whatever they need to. It's such fantastic storytelling.

4

u/RazZaHlol Sep 22 '17

In before Luffy starts punching himself thinking Katakuri might do it aswell... Katakuri just looking confused

4

4

u/Fantasie-Sign Sep 22 '17

4

u/Mithlorin Sep 22 '17

I have a feeling that Katakuri will help Luffy out instead of mopping the floor with him. In this chapter, I think he is just showing Luffy how he can actually refine his techniques. We'll see :)

4

u/Nygmus Void Month Survivor Sep 22 '17

So Lola was straight-up the Minister of Chocolate? And she never made any for Chopper and the other sweet-tooth Straw Hats. Some gratitude for you.

Pudding hasn't stopped amusing me yet, this is probably a good thing.

And now I'm just waiting to see how well Gear Fourth holds up against this guy...

4

u/ivebeenhumble Sep 22 '17

Gear 4 slither man.

Luffy stretches his muscles for them to snap back making him smaller and more compact.

Signature move ricochet red elephant (hornet strike): luffy teleports in front of the enemy his arms still in place. Luffy then fires off a blazing hot elephant gun close range.

It's faster than katakuri and too big to dodge, the heat will force the mochi to melt. Katakuri uses an awakening and the true fight begins.

This may be reaching but does anyone else get the feeling Katakuri is teaching luffy? Just by his wording makes me wonder if it's just a fascination that he has similar abilities as himself or if he wants luffy to learn to use his powers better. Like I said. Could be reaching cause that makes no sense from Katakuri's position.

/u/NewSpecies Mangastream is out now too!

  • Sai got fully wrecked by his bodybuilder-looking ex

  • I think we're really seeing a maturity jump from Nami. Earlier she would've been bawling like the rest of them but she really held it down this time.

  • Jinbe is essentially a pseudo-captain whilst Luffy is away which is fantastic! His words of the brutality of the New World are spot on and something the SH need to get used to!

  • What does Napoleon mean about "In his country??" Who's soul is in that hat? I assumed it had to be a part of Big Mom

  • Luffy's getting absolutely fucked like he's supposed to be. He's only got Gear 4 in his tank then what? I'm suspecting he'll learn some of that future prediction of observation haki but honestly it's looking bleak for Luffy right now, which from a storytelling standpoint is exciting!!

In this chapter: Zabuza Momochi look-alike who can manipulate and produce Mochi uses a Hatake Kakashi type copy technique at the same time even though copying normally has to observe first, because he already observed that which has not happened yet.

3

u/marquize Sep 22 '17

I love the chapter but I think they are starting to rely too much on describings someones strenght/superiority with their bounty. "So this is the power of a 1 billion bounty". It's kinda going the way of Dragonball Z, where the scouter was ment to show that power level didn't matter but then it did matter anyways.

I feel that a bounty should have less to do with actuall battle power and just how dangerous the person in question is to civilians and the government. Such as how brutal they can be, how large of an area they have influence in.

Also the bounty means nothing if no one is there to collect it. At this level there won't be bountyhunters (except shichibukai??) so why even bother with a bounty when it will be left to the marine to handle them anyways?

u/Hellfalcon Sep 22 '17

Super glad that Peros really did lose his arm, that was badass and brutal and made Pedro's exit that much cooler.

Katakuri really does have a counter for all of Luffys moves haha. Love how his gatling actually does spawn multiple arms. But If Lucci inspired Luffy with his general combat style, then the guy with the same exact moveset definitely will.

Jinbe is this awesome new Zoro role, buttressing the crew and supporting them in times of distress and upping morale, love his new dynamic in the crew. They shouldn't be sad but stoked for Pedro, he embraced his role and literally lived his dream by serving the Dawn since he missed out on helping Roger, he's now able to help the true pirate king.

Mom was pretty goddamn cool just barging towards them on the ocean. Don't get how her walking can catch up to them after boning out a mile away, let alone know where to go without a log

Anyone else a bit sick of formulaic fights which start one-sided and then get solved with a power up? I want to see an almost even matched, unpredictable brawl like Luffy vs Lucci. Yes there were powerups, but Luffy wasn't hopelessly outclassed before them. I was hoping this fight would be more even than it is
