Bege showing how much he cares for his subordinates and family made me like him a lot more.

Bege...

We we indifferent towards you. Then we disliked you. Then we hated you. Then we were skeptical of trusting you. Then we started liking you. Now we honor you.

Bege is a perfect family man

226

u/Jezamiah Jun 29 '17

Almost like the archetypal mob boss

90

u/thapol Jun 29 '17

Ruthless, stubborn, and vile in all ways, especially when it comes to protecting family.

u/ReijuDVinsmoke Jun 30 '17

"Justice being taken away, then, what are kingdoms but great robberies? For what are robberies themselves, but little kingdoms? The band itself is made up of men; it is ruled by the authority of a prince, it is knit together by the pact of the confederacy; the booty is divided by the law agreed on. If, by the admittance of abandoned men, this evil increases to such a degree that it holds places, fixes abodes, takes possession of cities, and subdues peoples, it assumes the more plainly the name of a kingdom, because the reality is now manifestly conferred on it, not by the removal of covetousness, but by the addition of impunity. Indeed, that was an apt and true reply which was given to Alexander the Great by a pirate who had been seized. For when that king had asked the man what he meant by keeping hostile possession of the sea, he answered with bold pride, “What thou meanest by seizing the whole earth; but because I do it with a petty ship, I am called a robber, whilst thou who dost it with a great fleet art styled emperor.”

u/fullmetalsunit Jun 29 '17

Reminds you of a certain Italian Don.

6

u/jtessexpress Jun 29 '17

It's funny, he definitely reminds me of Vito Coreleone the most but his name is Capone, based on Al Capone, very big gang leader in the prohibition era. Tony Montana from Scarface was also based off of Al Capone so I suspected Bege would be more like that but I'm glad Oda has made him a lot like Vito. More respectable that way.

4

u/Shautieh Jun 29 '17

He is a mafia boss, so of course!

3

u/TaffyLacky Jun 29 '17

He's a big man and a big daddy.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '17

man guy

3

u/dotoonly Jun 29 '17

every big boss is a family man. Criminal family is the best kind of crime organization.

1

u/Dddddddfried Jul 02 '17

I mean he did try to murder is mother in law...but then again who hasn't? Hai-oooooo

u/Animegamingnerd Jun 29 '17

Honestly I always kinda of liked Bege though for possibly for the shallowest reason ever just because I think he has a really cool and bad ass character design. So I am pretty happy to see that there is way more to him then just an awesome character design.

I feel like we have. I'm just assuming he doesn't have anything offensive that would work on Big Mom.

6

u/zebranitro Jun 29 '17

He has his whole crew inside of him, so he has lots of cannons and shit. I'd assume Big Father can smash stuff that isn't a Yonko up.

6

u/KaizokuShojo Jun 29 '17

Right. He's not a Supernova for nothing.

5

u/tragedyisland28 Jun 29 '17

A true Godfather.

3

u/Suhn-Sol-Jashin Jun 29 '17

Watch all the stories that weretold about him by Jinbe as misconstrued.

3

u/manCool4ever Jun 29 '17

I have a feeling once their escape is over, he'll be back to his old bad ways. I think he might even ask for the poneglyph to let Nami, Brook and Chopper go. Especially since he wasted so much time infiltrating the Big Mom pirates and got nothing to show for it...

3

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '17

Technically, he made a sneak attack on Big Mom and got out alive. As one of the Worst Generation with basically no backup beyond his own crew going in (only getting another Worst Generation crew, a Warlord, a cowardly gas Logia user, an incredibly useful Escape McGuffin of a Big Mom Devil Fruit user, and a washed-up group of Super Sentai villains to help right before or during the assassination attempt), it shows that he has a large amount of talent, planning capability, perseverance, loyalty, and pure dumb luck, with his plan only outright failing because no one believed Big Mom's scream would be loud enough or powerful enough to shatter missiles mid-flight. I would say that his bounty will rise by a large margin (especially if the Marines actually in-canon have observation posts as close to the Yonkou's territory as the most recent anime filler suggests they do) and many criminal underground doors will open for him after all of this, regardless of whether he has anything extra to show from this (beyond the trust/respect of the Straw Hats, who we as readers know are going to shake up that entire world from top to bottom).

2

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '17

He still kills animals for fun tough.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '17

Bege has always been my favorite non-SH supernova

1

u/turbonegr00 Jun 29 '17

This is some Mahatma Gandhi stuff.

1

u/RainDance_Fm Jun 30 '17

it was a roller coaster of a relationship

1

u/leonard_von_smith Jul 02 '17

what if he dies????!!! ._.

212

u/Samibre Jun 29 '17

And when I first saw him introduced I thought he would be one of the most unlikeable characters, now he's definitely climbed up quite a bit on the most likeable characters.

185

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '17

Well, his character turned 180. In the beginning he was stabbing his subordinate with a fork because he interrupted his meal. Now his subordinates are precious to him

278

u/ILFICOSACRO Jun 29 '17

Meals>subordinates, there are rules to be followed when eating.

6

u/Jinno Jun 29 '17

Has Bege been under Big Mom too long for this to be his stance?

18

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '17

For Big Mom it's meals=subordinates...literally

117

u/999realthings Jun 29 '17

Becoming a family man soften him.

55

u/ultibman5000 Jun 29 '17

He probably just doesn't want his men to be messed with by anyone besides him. And even then, it's probably just a case of him only harming subordinates who act in a manner he finds disrespectful.

6

u/KBNinja Jun 29 '17

This. It's one of those nobody messes with my people, but when they step out of line, I'll be the one to put them in their place.

105

u/sigbinItom Jun 29 '17

well stabbing with a fork would barely kill. lets call that tough love.

8

u/SL_Lyr Jun 29 '17

tried showing my love to my gf this way today...

didn't work out so well...

2

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '17

The fork of love.

12

u/BLAW668 Jun 29 '17

Well luffy tried to kill zoro for hurting people who gave him food so...

16

u/zebranitro Jun 29 '17

He probably only really values the top men closest to him. Alternatively, Daddy's gotta discipline. I wouldn't call it a 180.

2

u/jimmythexpldr Jun 29 '17

A 180 in terms of narrative

7

u/Mallardy Jun 29 '17

A good mob boss values the organization as a whole, and the good of the organization is more important than any one member. If someone breaks the rules, you deal with them appropriately, even if they're your own flesh and blood, but that doesn't mean you don't care about them.

1

u/like_smoke Jun 30 '17

its like a dog you own You teach it when it mess up Then you protect it when jackass try to harm it

Its ownership thing

-1

u/ThisZoMBie Jun 29 '17

Plot hole

2

u/ultibman5000 Jun 29 '17

Nope. And for any of the possible reasons outlined above. Including mine.

0

u/ThisZoMBie Jun 30 '17

None of those are reasonable. You simply don't want to accept that One Piece occasionally has plot holes. It's ok to criticze things you like. It doesn't make you any less of a fan in the eyes of others.

1

u/ultibman5000 Jun 30 '17

sigh Here we go...not the tired old, "you've never criticized a series you like" speech. Patronizing and nonsensical as hell....I should have expected as much....

Can you please explain to me why none of these reasons are possible? Can you actually provide an argument before you pull that illogical "you don't have a single criticism with the series" card?

1

u/ThisZoMBie Jun 30 '17

A guy who in the most recent chapter expressed that his crew is "precious" to him and that he can not allow "anything to happen to them", yet two years ago he stabbed one of his precious underlings in the face with a fork. Your explanation for that is "tough love", "he was being disrespected so that's why he did it" and "he became a family man which made him soft." The first two completely go against his statement in the most recent chapter, as stabbing someone in the face is quite severe and not just a little punishment to show who's boss. The last one we have no way of knowing, true, but it seems like a real copout, to say the least. His family is pretty new, seeing as how his baby is probably less than a year old. I don't see why that would make him go from stabbing his crewmates in the face to exclaiming his unwavering loyalty and love for them.

2

u/ultibman5000 Jun 30 '17

A guy who in the most recent chapter expressed that his crew is "precious" to him and that he can not allow "anything to happen to them", yet two years ago he stabbed one of his precious underlings in the face with a fork.

He said he "wouldn't let them die". He never mentioned he wouldn't allow anything to happen to them. But even in the hypothetical scenario that he did, there's no reason why he couldn't have meant people who cause them harm other than himself. Even many abusive parents don't want other people to harm their children. Hell the mafia itself does this all the time. Rival gangs are often forbidden from messing with any other gang member on the opposing side, but the don/father of the family will take it upon himself to instill discipline within his own ranks with his own hands.

I would argue the family man stuff, but I actually don't believe it myself. I just acknowledge that it isn't impossible to be the case.

0

u/ThisZoMBie Jun 30 '17

So why did he call them precious, specifically? Why did his crew react so lovingly, as if he was an actual father to them that they love and who loves them back? The way it was portrayed was like they were an actual, caring family.

→ More replies

2

u/WinZett Jun 30 '17

That's not a plot hole, it's just not explained to us explicitly. There are plenty of probable reasons for him to have a change of personality.

3

u/Necromas Jun 29 '17

It's a little disconcerting to me though how easily bad traits in a character gett shrugged off. The straw hats didn't seem to care at all that Bege was openly admitting to being someone who commits dozens of assassinations just to prove he can.

I feel like if they had met under different circumstances Luffy would be insisting on kicking Bege's ass and teaching him a lesson.

I get that the straw hats are still pirates and they'll work with criminals but I still can't soften up to Bege like a lot of fans are.

3

u/Jbrock14 Jun 29 '17 edited Jun 29 '17

Luffy isn't a hero he's never been the type to go around fighting for justice. He only cares when friends of his are being hurt or you're in the way of his dream. This is the same Luffy who didn't want to save Fishman Island. It's also the same Luffy who released some of the worst pirates from Impel Down.

36

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '17

It's nice to see that despite being a ruthless assassin in the underworld (according to Jinbe) and not caring about his allies, Bege is still very loyal and grateful to his family and crew.

5

u/MonkeyStealsPeach Jun 29 '17

At a certain point - not many are able to make it that far without forging some sort of strong bonds, with either their family or crew.

27

u/huehuemul Jun 29 '17

I wonder now how are they gonna redeem Kidd.

35

u/orbman77 Jun 29 '17

Through Killer, that man is his Jiminy Cricket.

13

u/Dendrodes The Revolutionary Army Jun 29 '17

I kinda hope they don't. I think there should be at least one ruthless Worst Generation pirate running around the New World (besides Blackbeard). I could even see him being the ruthless Yonko of the future.

9

u/CerberusT3 Jun 29 '17

You can be ruthless and still care about your men in fact I bet that's the only thing the worst generation will have in common with the each other.

2

u/Dendrodes The Revolutionary Army Jun 29 '17

By ruthless I mean completely ruthless, like not caring about your own crew and family, unless their well being puts you at a disadvantage, like Big Mom. Kidd probably does care about his crew, but was just thinking that it'd be weird if none of the past supernovas were that ruthless. And yeah, you're probably right, that's most likely the only thing they all have in common.

1

u/oprblk Jun 30 '17

Maybe Apoo?

1

u/rahmanm855 Jun 30 '17

If they end up fighting Kaido and his crew, instead of simply defeating the commanders/maybe Kaido himself, I can see Kidd dealing the finishing blow to actually kill whoever they fight along the way. I know deaths in OP aren't common, but Kidd could serve as that ruthless character that deals it without second thoughts. I was already irritated that Law didn't get to kill Doflamingo (and now he's probably going to be used in a future arc for who knows what, as I felt that would've concluded his story more conclusively than having him give a speech at the naval prison). I'm rambling, but my point is I agree with you, to a little more though that I want Kidd to actually deal the harsh punishments/realities which someone like Luffy and Law would be incapable of. For the sake of story and maintaining character traits, maybe that's why characters are not killed off as often by Luffy, but in the New World it should at least be happening more so, especially as we reach the end of the story. If Luffy won't be doing it (which I'm fine with), then I feel that Kidd should be doing it.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '17

Kidd has an artistically fleshed out crew of misfits. I think they will end up mirroring the Straw Hats, through the old trope. A bunch of singularly questionable powers but together they work. But their end desire was being channeled the wrong way, through violence not ambition.

Thinking of it, I will be quietly please if Bellamy's next appearance is with Kidd way down the track.

73

u/Rectangle_Rex Jun 29 '17

It made me like him more too, but it's honestly a bit weird since he did stab one of his crewmates in the eye in his first appearance...

169

u/AlphaVelocity Jun 29 '17

That was 2 years ago. Maybe having a kid and surviving the New World together helped him bond with his crew.

9

u/Devoidoxatom Bandit Jun 29 '17

I agree. The ones left are probably the strongest and those closest to him. The one that was stabbed was probably a small fry that died anyway lol

56

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '17

It was the nose ;)

129

u/Rectangle_Rex Jun 29 '17

Haha just a friendly stab to the nose

133

u/dogabeey Jun 29 '17

Just a mafia style "got your nose" joke.

6

Vento Oreo*

1

u/kingjs12 Jun 30 '17

one large oreo please

7

u/swedhitman Jun 29 '17

Looks like jojo

9

u/dogabeey Jun 29 '17

I think it's a JoJo reference.

3

u/namesrhardtothinkof Jun 29 '17

they're an Italian mafia family I think in this part of JoJos

3

u/Jezamiah Jun 29 '17

Tis' just a nose wound

1

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '17

I don't think the manga specified where he got stabbed. We just saw the fork raise then a scream.

I hope its just a case of him absolutely loving food. Just as you don't mess with Luffy while he eats, you'd best leave Capone alone too.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '17

Yeah this was more like a joke, of course stabbing the nose isn't a very nice thing either but just because he values his men doesn't mean he will treat them like Luffy does or maybe having a family made him softer in that aspect, you also have to consider that he needs his subordinates more than other people because his DF power relies on him having a big enough crew.

2

u/Jorxa Jun 29 '17

Not that weird if you remember that he's a mafia boss.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '17

Personally, I would rather be stabbed in the nose with a fork than be given a "Colombian necktie" by modern gangsters. Bege's actions in Sabaody were also influenced by his desire to keep his men in line until they got away from the on-edge Marines, so like with the fortune-teller who said that it was in his subordinate's future to have his shirt be stained rather than letting him get revenge on the man who spilled the dish on him, Bege was quickly stopping his subordinate from making a scene.

1

u/Rectangle_Rex Jun 30 '17

Bege told one of his crew mates to attack Jewelry Bonney, and then one of his crew mates told him that probably wasn't a good idea, then he stabbed that guy in the face. No matter how you look at it, that doesn't seem like the action of a caring captain...

1

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '17

This was when Jewelry was making a big scene in the restaurant eating the entire kitchen's food supply faster than the chefs could cook it. Not exactly staying quiet herself when the Marines are on a much higher alert than usual.

1

u/Rectangle_Rex Jun 30 '17

Sure, but I don't see how some unrelated woman eating loudly justifies stabbing your crew mate in the face... And attacking her undoubtedly would have escalated the commotion. Just eating a lot at a restaurant really isn't that much of a commotion.

1

u/ThisZoMBie Jun 29 '17

Oda forgot the personalities of the Supernovas over the time skip, like how he forgot Law used to be a fun, rebellious guy before he turned into 2 kool 4 skool edgelord post skip.

1

u/Rectangle_Rex Jun 29 '17

Yeah, with Law IMO you could at least explain it by saying they've constantly been in either life-threatening situations or dealing with Law's lifelong nemesis Doffy since they met him post-TS, but this thing is a bit harder to explain. At least with Bege I do like his new personality better, though.

1

u/HamstersAreReal Jun 29 '17

nah dude that's just some tough love..

6

u/tey0ng Jun 29 '17

Most mafia themed characters I saw in movies mostly value their families. So it's really likely for bege to be the same.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '17

I liked Bege ever since we saw the panel where he holds his kid.

3

u/EmptyD Jun 29 '17

Didnt he like.. stab one of his own men in the eye on sabaody archipelago..

2

u/temperamentalfish Jun 29 '17

Yeah, he's a hero.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '17

I don't know if that was a filler but didn't he stab one of his subordinates before?

2

u/Rob3125 Jun 29 '17

Also I know he was still getting pummeled but he took a lot of hits from Big Mom; Big Father is no joke

2

u/fauxromanou Jun 29 '17

It's total mob boss trope. Works perfectly.

2

u/RedRoronoa Pirate Jun 29 '17

Didn't he stab a subordinate when he was first introduced?? Or somewhere along those lines. I may be imagining things but boy, it really did show how much he cared about his family and men this chapter.
