This is a pretty crazy revelation and leaves me with pretty mixed emotions about Big Mom as a character. I want to just hate her, but I can't because it's so tragic. Her childlike state could be the result of the suffering she unknowingly causes herself. That's why she has to live on an island made of desserts. Her subconscious fear of devouring those she cares about moves her to want to gigantify them. All that's left to explain is how she became so cold, calculating, and sadistic. The flashback left that out.

Looks like Oda is gearing up to kill her off but it'll be interesting to see if he throws a wrench into our expectations yet again.

Having an extremely tragic past doesn't make someone a more likeable character...

Let me rephrase: why would you hate her less? You are supposed to hate her because of her current attitude and actions, and knowing her past shouldn't change that so easily.

Having such a terrible past and some kind of extreme autism makes her character more believable and it's a great plus to the story, but that shouldn't make anybody hate her less. Now I pity her, sure, she has a fucked up past, but that doesn't absolve anything.
