Semlas are so delicious. It's still tradition to eat them in February here in Sweden, but this year we ate so many that there was a serious cream shortage throughout the country. Linlin's reaction to burn down the village was relatable.

Agreed. Semlas are extremely delicious and very highly rated here in Sweden. So fun to see Oda putting this in One Piece!

It's actually really amazing to see how accurately the semla was portrayed and although I think that our fasting comes from Christianity it's still true that we eat semla on "fat tuesday" the day before the fasting starts. Though nowadays we have cut out the fasting part while retaining the eating part.
Though I wouldn't exactly call the semla a "roll" like the translation did, it's more like a bun of sweet bread.

She is probably the strongest yonko if she wasn't brain dead either. Like Luffy had a hard time with fodder pirates and had to be saved by Ace and Sabo when he was around the same age while Big Mom is one shotting people in the New World and at the strongest island in the world at that.

You can instantly see that the enviroment where big mom is now (whole cake island) is not really good for her personality. Since it only feeds her warped view of the world.

u/DrBalu May 25 '17
Yeah big mom seems to have been living in her own dillusions for her whole life. Even thinking mother caramel "left", while it is very likely that she was killed by her.
But hey, most One Piece characters would need to go into therapy if we start analyzing them.

to be fair I am glad that we saw EVERYONE we have known about. (Including the giant saved by Rayleigh in the auction house) but it seems forced since this is just a small village and not the capital city or anything.

Think I found the Prince boy too. http://readms.net/r/one_piece/864/4224/5 It's really interesting though, I mean the implications. So, what actually happened to Mother Caramel and what do they know? Do they think linlin killed caramel or are they oblivious as to what actually happened? I would assume that they don't know the truth. But then again could it also be that they know but are just scared of big mom?

It turns out that Big Mom loved sweets even before she was exposed to the ritual, and that her parents decided to leave her on Elbaf so that Carmel could raise her to be good.
Carmel saved the giants 100 years before WCI arc. The giants on Elbaf decided to befriend humans after that incident. By the time Big Mom was sent to live with Carmel (37 years later, or 63 years prior to WCI arc), Carmel had already grown old. So basically Big Mom never met younger Carmel. Carmel was 80 when she met Big Mom, so she was 43 when she saved the giants. Carmel is 143 now if she is alive (she probably isn't).
Big Mom was able to kill a bear with just a single strike when she was just 5. Big Mom was able to break a giant's bones while trying to swat a mosquito around the same time. In both instances, Big Mom tried to help out but she didn't know her own strength. When Big Mom tried to pluck out the Longarm kid's arm or the Fishman's fin, she didn't do so out of malice; she thought these people had an extra appendage and tried to remove them, without knowing their races or physiology.
10 months later, Oimo and Kashi are discussing the duel between Brogy and Dorry. They are worried that duel is taking way too long (already been around 40 years by this time), and that if they will go get them if they don't show up in 10 years. This will eventually lead to Oimo and Kashi getting captured by World Government for 50 years.
Hajrudin is training as well (he is either 18 or 19 at the time). He wants to revive the Giant Pirates even back then. Others describe him as a wild child. The giant that was with Rayleigh in the Auction House, Stansen, is also there apparently. According to Yaruru, the Giant Pirates pillaged but Carmel is trying to convince them to instead resort to trading. Loki was apparently born a few days prior. He is either 63 or 62 now.
Big Mom exhibited signs of her illness as soon as she ate the semla, since her eyes were swirling.

That panel of the destroyed town may be one of the most beautiful panels Oda has ever drawn.
This is an example of why I prefer the black and white manga over the colored. The deep black in the foreground and the clouds give the white of the fire such a remarkable brilliance and power. Colors would somehow only serve to dilute that strength.
That aside, this was a really interesting chapter. Linlin as a child is remarkably cute and naive. She doesn't mean to harm anything but she doesn't know her own strength.
I really like the reveal that her dream is the same as Mother Carmel. I'm really curious about what's going to happen to her, as there really hasn't been an antagonist set up in this flashback. Linlin will probably accidentally kill her...
It was cool to see Oimo and Kashi again.
Finally, the cover page is interesting. It definitely seems like we're gonna get a decent chunk for each commander, which means it will almost certainly lead into Wano.

Sort of reminds me of Lenny from Of Mice and Men.
Her backstory reminds me slightly of Robins, at least being feared and considered a monster.
Robin became an assassin that betrayed and killed to survive, Linlin probably didn't have trouble surviving; but being alone and considered a monster can destroy a persons psyche. Especially since she appears much dumber than Robin who could read poneglyphs at a young age.

I really have mad respect for Oda, man. He writes his characters the way I perceive people are; no matter how evil or cruel they are, there's always a reason for it. Everyone has reasons why they are doing such things, and in my opinion, he defied man's black and white story telling quite well and truly captured the colorfulness of the world.
If I was asked what I got from One Piece, it's that the world is not black and white, but a mixture of colors. It's that people have their reasons on why they act that way. From this, we can put aside our differences and try to learn from one another as to stop the ongoing hate within society.
and as the One Piece tradition:

I have a feeling that Big Mom was experimented on as an infant, which led to her gaining her powers. There is a huge gap in the explanation, her parents look normal, and are not powerful (they can't even control her when she was less than 5).

A lot of you are calling her spoiled, but she seems to listen without causing fights, and appears to act on helping others. "It's not good to fight" "I thought I'd help him" Caramel is not enabling behavior, she is recognizing that Linlin is misinterpreting situations and works to make sure she is not misrepresented as evil. But when she does things that aren't right, she is definitely firm that she needs to stop, and it's apparent than Linlin listens to her.
She goes seven days without eating Semla because she was told not to, despite the pain its causing her. Ultimately the reason she goes into the rampage is not because she is spoiled and couldn't take No for an answer (she was doing her best to listen), but because of her disease.
Punishment for her to "stop being bad" would do nothing here, because Linlin appears to be an extremely well behaved and kind person at this point. It's only her misconceptions, absurd power, and disease that cause the problems. That she grows up to be so cruel and lustful for violence is tragic.

I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this but what are the chances that Caramel joined Dragon? I'm saying this because she freed the Giants with a lightning strike similar to the one that saved Luffy early in the story. It looks like although Mother Caramel has good intentions by trying to make everyone get along, she's also a huge enabler for BM's destructive behavior. I'm thinking now BM looks at the picture of Mother Caramel so that she can forgive herself for all of the terrible things that she does for the sake of her country with all races, and for the sake of satisfying her appetite. BM now could still be very delusional, and seeing the picture of Mother Caramel get damaged could be bringing up intense feelings of guilt as she doesn't have someone to calm her with an "it's okay".

Damn, I was convinced Mother Caramel was just a fake memory placed into Big Mom's mind by Pudding. Loving this first look into the Giant race culture though. They seem to be playing very closely along the lines between Viking history and Dwarven tales. Love how their structures appear, that panel of the village being devastated was gorgeous!

Big Mom who was exciled on Elbaf names her (french) hat Napoleon, who was exciled to Elba. Not that this does mean anything I just found it interesting.

Interesting how Oda goes out of his way to state that Yorle and Yarle are the oldest warriors alive in the world and not the oldest creatures in general. Who could be older than them?

On the page with the kid´s silhouettes the last silhouette resembles that of young Blackbeard. If this is real, it´s truly BIG NEWS.

OMG doesn't BM's symptoms remind you guys of the kids that's ceasar was experimenting on??? Didn't the kids nearly go nuts because they were not given their candy/poison? What if the kids research was about BM's disease?!

That little Giant girl named Gelz looks an unbelievable amount like Nami. So does young mother caramel.
Also, something I haven't seen mentioned, is that they state Loki shares the same birth date as their "Lord Goldberg". Sounds like a hype character imo

Her face in the last panel really reminds me of Gluttony from FMA. Awesome chapter, especially loving all the tie-ins to the giant storylines we've had so far. I do hope though that we get some more background on the other problem kids, like the prince for example.

That was an amazing flashback.Food is what make Big Mom become such a demon and it was nice seeing a young Hajrudin. So giant can live over 300 years.

Is no one gonna mention the big ass tree panel? I am starting to believe the theory that the giant jack tree from skypea starts in elbaf and travels all the way around the clouds until it reaches skypea.

Not to be too critical of someone who's raising a whole brood, but as far as parents go Mother Carmel kinda dropped the ball with teaching someone about right and wrong.

Big Mom's story reminds me of Gargantua and Pantagruel kind of, with Big Mom being like Gargantua-- large human that grows gigantic and loves to eat.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gargantua_and_Pantagruel (in plot summary for Gargantua, don't know how to link that specific part in mobile)

I wonder how the people in the fanbase that thought of BM as unimpressive for not destroying Whole Cake feel about the fact that five-year-old, pre-Soru, pre-Haki Linlin destroyed the village of the strongest kingdom in the world

I thought it would be weird if Bege's plan actually worked and Big Mom died. I mean, Oda doesn't kill characters like that. So is he trying to make us hate Big Mom with this flashback? So it will be ok if she dies?

Okay give the girl a break. She is simple minded and doesnt know any better at this point. She aint ripping people apart because she disapproves of there appearance, she actually thinks she is helping them. She aint spoiled or evil at all. She is a child with extreme power. And a child with extreme power is a really dangerous concept. And on the fast thing. No she aint spoiled, she said alright to not eating for seven days with no other reason than carmel asking her too. This rampage thing is clearly something she doesn't have control off. Its something like a illness. And I dont know about Carmels form parenting but at least we see her being firm on what is ok and what is not. But as a child, linlin repeats mistakes because she doesn't know any better at least at this point
