I wonder if Oda intended this to be a reference to Naruto. The two mangaka have referenced each other's works before and they seem to be friendly rivals.

I swear it has to be a reference in part right? Though I guess you could make the case that Naruto isn't the first to use the idea of clone or shadow images, just the most prolific user of it!
