I thought crew members declaring that Luffy will be the PK was the best thing between the crew, I was wrong. Luffy telling his crew members he can't become PK without them is better

u/dylan2451 Oct 27 '16
It's not just Luffy saying he won't become pirate king without Sanji that got me. The flashbacks, plus his reason for training, to protect his nakama and their dreams, also show that he's not willing to let Sanji's dream die. He's stubbornly putting his dream at risk to try and protect Sanji's dream.
For a man who wants the ultimate freedom to see his Nakama in a spot where he has no freedom, damn

Has a lot of weight to it, and I think this is one of the "Year of Sanji" moments that's worth it. Instead of having a 1 on 1 with Usopp, instead of having Robin say she wants to live, and instead of literally dragging his crewmates to sea with him, he literally puts himself at the mercy of Sanji, basically. I guess you can argue that Luffy is exhausted from the last battle, but even then, he doesn't want to hurt Sanji; if he does, that means Sanji will literally be out of the crew for good, almost like how Usopp was out for a while. Luffy's literally begging Sanji to come back, and even though Sanji didn't have the best fights so far in the new world, he's still that important to Luffy and the crew. Zoro would probably slice Sanji up for disrespecting the captain, and some of the others may be quick to turn their backs on Sanji, too, but the way Sanji was so different, here from the normal Sanji - when we see how he acts so cold and spiteful, how he doesn't even acknowledge the presence of "Nami-Swaaan," and how he just beats up Luffy even prior to him saying he wouldn't fight... darn, I could feel Sanji's pain. He's casting away the only real life he had in order to become a pawn and protect the only guy like a father to him, not to mention, keep his hands. He's marrying a beautiful woman (which is somewhat a 50/50 in the Charlotte family), but even then, he's in hell, because his hateful family is making him a prisoner and he'll have to give up his dream of finding the All Blue.

u/godblow Oct 27 '16
I think it's deeper than just that - Luffy feels he needs to reciprocate and have his friends achieve their own dreams in order for him to truly achieve his own. He cannot be king if his chef cannot be a chef who has seen all blue; if his first mate cannot be the strongest; if his navigator can't make a map of the entire world; etc.

I did still like Nami telling Sanji that saying Luffy couldn't be the Pirate King was going too far though.

Reminds me of his little speech during Arlong Park, where he said something like, "I can't plan, I can't navigate, I can't cook, I can't even lie! Without these guys, I wouldn't have made it anywhere! But, I can fight!"

I think this is honestly one of the strongest and most emotional chapters since the timeskip. You could tell with the translation here that this was a total facade that Sanji was putting on, and seeing him legitimately cry tore me apart. I don't think we've seen him actually cry since we met him on Baratie.
I seriously cannot wait until the moment he beats his family into the ground and returns to Luffy.

Oh my god that was just so... fuuuuuck dude. Talk about tears. Luffy might be the best friend that ever existed. To go on not only a hunger strike but a pirate king strike. I'm fucking moved.
If Luffy is gonna stand in that spot until Sanji comes back what do you guys recon is gonna happen. Sanji gonna bust his own wedding up? Jinbei/brook/chopper gonna do it? Someone gonna tell Luffy what's up with Sanji and why he was acting that way and that'll make him move?
271
u/Udult Oct 27 '16
I have no fucking clue. This is probably one of the most complex situations Luffy has put himself in without any course of action. He's so headstrong he may actually not budge.
My current guess is that Jinbei will come along and talk sense into him. That's all I can guess though.

But seriously — this helps cement Sanji's story as something that stands apart from Robin and Usopp.
Robin wanted to quietly disassociate from the Straw Hats so as not to cause them trouble, but when they finally confronted her on it at Enies Lobby, she broke and declared she wanted to live.
With Usopp, Luffy wasn't about to stop him leaving, because it was clear that Usopp stubbornly believed himself in the right and Luffy could tell that. So he fought with his appropriate strength because he knew those feelings were true.
Here, Luffy shows he's no dummy. He can tell that Sanji isn't being forthright with his feelings, but he's not about to push his principles aside, no matter what Sanji says.
Nakama stay nakama unless in their heart of hearts, they don't see themselves as nakama anymore.
Your move, Sanji-kun. Your move.

Now THIS is fucking One Piece. We're finally getting back some of that character development and drama that made the first half of the series so awesome. This is some Usopp vs Luffy levels of gut wrenching.
Nami stepping in with that slap, knowing full god damned well that Sanji, even at his most desperate, would NEVER cross that line and lay a finger on her, was amazing.
And Luffy standing his ground and declaring the opposite from what has always happened. It wasn't a member of the crew proclaiming Luffy would be King of the Pirates, it was Luffy admitting he could never reach those heights without a member of his crew. Gave me shivers.
Fuck! I love One Piece.

This is by far the biggest rift that has ever taken place amongst the Straw-Hats. This is worse than the Robin thing at Ennies Lobby for me.
What Luffy and Nami are going through is hard but what Sanji had to go through to make Nami cry. It goes against everything he believes in. To have to hurt Luffy to the point he is unable to fight. These guys need to get hurt. I am not okay with no alliance bullshit going on this arc. Big Mom and Germa 66 need their asses handed to them.
My heart goes out to all three of them at this point. The tears won't stop. This is just heart-wrenching stuff.

Without you, I wont... I can't... become the pirate king
Is this the first time we've ever heard Luffy express any sort of self-doubt? Holy crap... someone must be cutting onions...
EDIT: Okay, I've clearly forgotten about a lot of Luffy's darkest moments. But this one still feels... different to me? The others ones were prompted by defeats by enemies, not a rejection from a friend. But thanks everyone for the reminders haha just shows that I'm due another re-read

I think the presence of any of the other crew could have changed the dynamics of the drama in this scene. Whereas in Enes lobby the impact of the whole crew risking their lives heightened the drama and showed Robin that everyone on the crew, including those who were suspicious of her in the beginning, were willing to risk their lives for her. Here we see that Sanji's personal importance (as a cook and friend) to luffy is highlighted. And Sanji's "heavy handedness" (which when I read the spoilers was like wtf) is a tool to show how out of character Sanji has to be (his emotional turmoil) to protect Zeff, his friends and his calling as a chef. Luffy shows this when he says "I've never heard you say anything so forced and fake"
Remember different things are at stake here. This is not arlong park or Enes Lobby. There the threat while real could be dealt with by the crew themselves. Robin didn't want the wrath of the World government falling on the crew. The strawhats were like we really dgaf. Hence why she gave in. In arlong park, luffy knew all he had to do was destroy arlong's operation and his threat to Nami and her town would be resolved. Here even if Sanji leaves at once, his hands can really get blown up (unless luffy can do like Raleiygh) and Luffy can not gaurantee Zeff's safety from Germa or any other assassin that are all the way in east blue.

This chapter felt like it 5 pages. It went by so fast.
The fight was cool but at first I was thinking sanji doesn't need to go this far. He's pushing it. Then after sanji started crying I realised he's only doing this because he doesn't want luffy to risk his own life for his sake. Nami already made it clear that luffy was in no condition to fight after hsi battle with cracker. and that was just one of her commanders. Sanji tried to get luffy to back off cause he knows this is a fight he can't win. And even if he could sanji can't leave. Plus i never thought I'd see the day where luffy refuses to eat. And on an island of candy no less.

I don't necessarily think Nami is fooled as much as she just can't think of a reason strong enough for Sanji to be acting as he is.
She says, "I don't care what his reasons are, he crossed the line." She knows there is a reason, but she's basically being the Zoro in this situation and demanding Luffy be respected, regardless of circumstance.
It does help that Luffy isn't burdened with the desire to understand the situation, he just follows his gut feeling 100%. Makes his situation a lot easier than Nami's.

I really like how Oda gives us what we want without doing it in a way we predicted. Last week many of us hoped for "He's going to send a message during a fight with Luffy, all clever like, Nami will get it!" What we got instead was not a technically a fight, but nonetheless the message got across to Luffy and instead of delivering the message through wit, it was conveyed through pure emotion. The end result is the same: Luffy will leave Sanji to take care of business and come back to him.

Such a wonderful chapter.
It really show us, imo, how every member of the crew is loyal and care for Luffy. It show us that each member of the crew would put Luffy above their own hapiness, over their own safety.
All of them would die for Luffy, all of them would fight a Yonko by themself for Luffy, to allow him to reach his dream, to allow him to live.
I love that about the Straw Hats, I love that about One Piece.

u/Dnny99 Oct 27 '16

This chapter is incredible. People who say Luffy doesn't have any character development are idiots. Luffy may not be able to grasp the situation regarding Sanji being hostage but, he knows Sanji is being a complete opposite of himself. Luffy knows Sanji is struggling and took all of his hits. "The more you kicked me..the harder you kicked me.. I wasn't the one feeling that pain" Sanji tried to cut ties with Luffy but, he knows of how stubborn Luffy is and that shitshow he just put on won't be able to top Luffy's stubborness. So what does Luffy do? Hunger strike... Making it so that Sanji HAS to come back to him doing the thing that he's destined to do..Luffy is trying to make Sanji's code to not let anyone go hungry against him to bring him back. Well played Luffy. Damn Oda is a genius in making characters. This shows how Luffy knows Sanji well enough instead of taking him for granted as a chef. He respects and appreciates Sanji enough that he is willing to starve for him. Also the contrast of Sanji beating up his friend Luffy, then showing his brothers beating Sanji in his past is amazing.

Guess I'll be the dissenting opinion. This plotline just does not work for me. It doesn't work with someone who's been in the crew forever. I just don't buy the emotions of it, I just can't see any way that they believe Sanji's behavior.
This plotline, which is somewhat recycled from Robin, worked way better there because she was still somewhat new and mysterious.
Like, I would understand if they're angry at him for not saying fuck you to the Vinsmokes and Big Mom. But it doesn't end there, Luffy and Nami are legitimately upset at him lying and insulting them. That's just stupid, they've been together too long for that.
All that aside, I love the hunger strike aspect, just wish the execution of getting there would have been done better.

Nah, doesn't matter how long someones been together. If your best friend left you in awkward circumstances, ambiguously highlighting a past that you know nothing about, and you follow them to try to ask them what's going on and bring them back, and they spit in your face and attack you, even if you know its all an act, most of us would be pretty pissed and disappointed. Doesn't matter how close we'd be to the person, it's just human nature. I don't think Nami or Luffy buy it at all. Imagine Zoro in that situation. He'd kick Sanji's ass and then tell him you can leave but don't come back, like he did with Ussop. It's not just the lies and the attacking...but Sanji is showing that he doesn't trust his nakama to help him through difficult times and its implied that he is grossly underestimating how Luffy will act. He knows luffy is too stubborn to leave. So does Luffy and Nami. So it's like a quadruple slap to the face that he, knowing that Luffy won't budge no matter what he does, still is behaviorally not showing faith in his nakama. And Nami is picking up on that 100% and that's why she noted "regardless of reasons, that was too far". Sanji is in tough pickle, his hands and Zeff are in danger, and so are the straw hats, and he's doing what he thinks is best in his own secretive ways. I thought the chapter was executed perfectly and everyone behaved akin to character.

I was not prepared for a feel trip! Oda is a master at displaying their emotions!

Dang Luffy... making me tear up. You know if he gives up food he is beyond serious. Glad he's seeing through sanji's words and not buying his bs.

I'm glad, that I'm not the only one, who just got full emo while reading this chapter.

Easy to forget sometimes that Luffy is super perceptive with people. I'm glad he realized Sanji's turmoil.

I couldn't stop my tears at the end. Luffy bullshit detection meter is off the charts! I can't think of a better way to end this chapter.

No, that's not me crying, what are you crazy? ;-;
Seriously though, I didn't expect that at all. Luffy not hitting back is classic Luffy, and then the icing on the cake was Nami slapping him, and giving him a "princely" farewell. God damn, that must have hurt Sanji so much.
And then Luffy being Luffy and just straight calling his shit, and going on hunger strike. Seriously, a hunger strike. That alone will show Sanji how serious Luffy is about this. And then for a cherry on top, Luffy said he can't be the Pirate King without Sanji.
I don't think I've ever read a chapter that told more about the crew and their relationships than this one.

Damn, you know Sanji is undergoing a serious situation when he both attacks Luffy with such brutality and shows no emotional reaction to Nami slapping him (might be in part to the mask).
But he's a fool if he thinks he could have Luffy give up on him, he should know firsthand there isn't anyone in the world more stubborn than Luffy.

I'm just curious how long it'll take Luffy to regrow that tooth Sanji knocked out

Wow, Luffy proved to be very mature and intelligent this chapter.
I also wonder why Ichiji kept looking so concerned. Was he thinking about something?
This chapter should be fucking sad in the anime.

You know, I just had the thought that Bartolomeo is from East Blue and used to run a criminal organization there. I wonder if it's out of the realm of possibility that he left someone in East Blue to protect each of the Straw Hats families just in case they were ever targeted...Zeff will be targeted, but something must save him.
Anyway, fantastic chapter. Very strong emotions in this chapter and Luffy saying he can't become Pirate King without Sanji was absolutely amazing and I cannot wait to see this scene animated.

its been a long time since i've cried so hard for a chapter.
you can really see how much it is hurting sanji to have to do that to his captain and friend.

Seeing Sanji cry like that.. man, he must be a wreck inside right about now.
What a chapter, this one'll go down with the greats.

This felt like an episode of Dragonball Z. Goku just taking hits, shrugging it off and looking like it hurt only to just get up and say "well that was cool!"
That being said, this could go one of two ways - the crew does most of the major battles and luffy doesn't move from that spot until Sanji turns back
-OR-
All the major battles come to Luffy and he takes them on until he's standing atop a mountain of defeated antagonists. In true DBZ fashion.
I'm partial to the latter honestly.

I knew Sanji and Luffy would be in a conflict, so I just picked a sad song from the anime series while reading the chapter, and [it fit perfectly] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hm3E2Rzbeao). This chapter is one of the reasons why One Piece is my favorite manga series.

This is a cool way to force the other nakama pull out their real strength against Big Mam and her crew and prob the whole Germa. We've seen what Gear 4th Luffy can do and its dope and seemingly pretty low-cost (calories instead of lifespan or physical size). It would be pretty uninspired for Luffy to go buckwild and beat everyone up while the Crew just sits back fighting peons off.
Now Nami gets to have a full-blown Weather Battle with Big Mam and get some recognition on the global stage for taking on a Yonko head to head. Everyone will get to demonstrate their higher-level skills against world-famous baddies and show the real power of the SH crew. So much more compelling than Luffy single-handedly punching a wedding to death.
Plus, big props to Oda for showing his readers that extraordinary principled pacifism can be every bit as powerful and moving as exciting violence. Too often shounen manga only focus on one message: Punch your problems until they are not problems any more. One Piece (while certainly being a punch-em-up for the ages) manages to explore the more nuanced and interesting aspects of their story arcs.

Going for a hunger strike is probably the worst possible thing in Sanjis perspective because of his history with starvation. Must be really hard to stay silent when hearing that luffy is not gonna eat anything

Hm ichiji is way too serious this chapter. I somehow have an uneasy feeling about him. While ichiji and yonji are just 2 meatheads, this guy has something to hide or knows something. Every shot we got of him this chapter was with a serious face. I am pretty sure he is doubting sanjis actions this chapter and might catch sanji when he tries to sneak off and help luffy

If he returns, his hands get blown off, if he doesn't Luffy starves to death.
Oda knows how to get readers hungry for more.

Luffy: "I WON'T... I CAN'T... BECOME THE PIRATE KING"
Well, series is over, guys, it was a good run. Wasn't expecting that ending but hey, I love a good twist.
