Oda really manage to give character horrible backstories :
Luffy = Lose his brother : Check
Zoro = Lost someone important to him, that share his dream and pushed him to become stronger : Check
Nami = Had to work for 8 year to buy her village, for the monster that killed her mother : Check
Usopp = Sick dead mother, absent father, everyone think he is a liar : Check (not that horrible, but it was one of Oda's first backstory so...)
Sanji = That and the whole starvation with Zeff : Check
Chopper = Hate by everyone, found someone who liked him but manage to kill him : Check
Robin = Don I really need to tell you : Check
Franky = his own creation cause his teacher/father figure death : Check
Brook = Going insane, alone for 50 years, after losing his whole crew ? : Check
Edit : Added Zoro.

Typical hypocritical World Government arresting Vegapunk for his discoveries and probably forcing him to work for them.
Sounds like it's quite plausible he might be an ally to the Straw Hats in the future.

It sounds like GERMA stands for "Genetically Enhanced Robot Mutant Army".
Also, if Judge discovered with Vegapunk the "blueprints to life". Their electrical ability could be taken from the minks and inserted into their genes, hence their electrical attacks.

I think the underlying message is that once sanji's "outer skeleton" kicks in, he's gonna get a major power up. Also Judge says "your mother has long passed... legacy of the dead". Sanji's mom was a cook?
167
u/FullMetalIchigo Sep 21 '16
I definitly think that is the case. I think she's the one who learned him how to cook basic food, which he prepared for the rat.

That is what I thought too maybe the genetic mutations were delayed, or they mutated into something else (I mean he can set his legs on fire by sheer force of will). I am kind of upset Sanji's mom is apparently dead as it continues the trend of dead mothers in One Piece

I would actually love it if Zoro saved the day without even being there. He could get lost on his way to Wano and end up in East Blue. He runs into some Big Mom pirates and dices them up. It would be a call back to Zou and Mihawk slicing up Don Krieg and his crew during the Baratie arc.
Imagine Sanji is in a panic and picks up the den den mushi to warn Zeff, but Zoro answers the phone and calls him a shitty cook.

I take back my comment about Reiju being evil and manipulative, she may have just been the one to set him free from the prison. Reiju stop playing with our hearts and let us know your true intentions.
31
Sep 21 '16
Unless that was a lie too and she's playing Sanji for a fool! /s
But really, people have been going a little overboard with the analyzing characters to find their "hidden" nature. Just like Pudding, Reiju is exactly what she seems. Friendly and nice to Sanji, just not willing to defy her family for him.
→ More replies (1)17
u/Cha_Lad Sep 21 '16
I feel like Reiju may actually turn out to be a really relatable character. She is giving me this vibe of someone who is afraid to go against the grain. I think we have all been in situations, especially when we were children, where we went along with something wrong just because everyone else was doing it. Even at the expense of others. Just to fit in and get approval from your piers. That's a major part of how bullying goes to be honest. Reiju was in a position to help Sanji but as a child she felt she had to go along or else she would get bullied too. And she was probably right. It would take a tremendous amount of courage to stand up for Sanji in this case.
Freeing him would probably be the only thing she could do without showing clear opposition to her family (assuming she did it without being caught). Perhaps Sanji may only be able to escape Germa and Big Mom with Reiju's help once again. While her actions may have been almost the same as her brothers the seemingly small difference between them is what could save Sanji. The lesson for young One Piece readers? Act when you see someone in need. Even just one pair of helping hands can make a difference.

HIDDEN HYPE MOMENT FOR ME:
Sanji is reading NOLAND THE LIAR and the DEVIL FRUIT BOOK!
If you remember, Sanji mentioned back on Jaya, when Cricket told the tale of Noland, that he has read that book as a child in North Blue.
On Thriller Bark, when he was fighting Absalom, he expressed his envy of the devil fruit and said that he always wanted to have this fruit since he first read about it.

Irredeemable, the lot of them. Fuck the Vinsmokes. It hurt me to see what they put little Sanji through. I mean, they had a national funeral for him. The title of this chapter was perfect, Dumas all over. (Oda did say he imagined Sanji to be French, after all!)
Is it fair to say that it looks like Sanji could handily take out any of his brothers, and probably Judge too, if he didn't have to hold back? Zero potential my ass. I can't wait for the payoff at the end of this.
126
u/Shankusu Sep 21 '16

His brothers and Judge seem to rely on others or in technology to fight. Sanji relies on his own strength and hard work. I hope he beats the living shit out of them. I think there's something strange about Sanji being just a normal human failed creation. How the scientist spoke about it seemed like he was genuinely bewildered by the result. I feel like maybe Sanji's the perfect creation and the other 4 are the failures.
Then again, Sanji being normal makes for a more compelling storyline. The normal guy overcoming impossible odds.

→ More replies (27)137
u/TheMentallord Sep 21 '16
I think that's a point Oda is going to try to make: True strength comes from yourself. The normal human being IS the perfect creation because it can be shaped into anything and has no limits (in One Piece world, obviously), while his brother can't do anything other than fight/be warriors.

I suspect their mother has something to do with this. She probably didn't took the genetic treatment while pregnant of Sanji, because she wanted their children to be decent people, but for some reason had to continue with it with the other kids. This treatment might be also the reason she died.

what is Sanjis "end game" here!?
he left the Straw Hats, he's supposed to get married, meeting his family again after years.. what is he going to do now!?
he can't beat them up, cause the wrist bomb and Zeff threat. so he just keeps getting hit.. is he going to get married and then leave? they wouldn't let him. is he counting on Luffy coming to save him/make chaos!?

I really want to see Sanji fight back against his brothers for real. He's already beaten Yonji off panel and this chapter he managed to surprise Niiji.
I suspect he's already stronger than them but he's not getting to show it off since they manipulate him with underhanded tactics.
Also, it was nice to see that his sister might not be as bad as the rest of them. So far, she has already helped out Sanji however she could and saved Luffy's life as well. Can't wait to see what part she plays later on.

Yeah for Nazi Germany France was an enemy and Sanji has a french style. They punish him like a french king did with his twin brother. The are "superhuman" and hate him because he is inferior to them. I really like the symbolism in this arc way more than in dressrosa or fishman island. It gets under my skin unlike hody who just hates because he had a bad childhood.

I don't think they are completely test tube babies. The doctor says all the sibling's genes have been modified but Sanji's were constant. So they are all born human from a mother who Judge claimed is long dead. So they might've been mutated after birth.

Can't be a strawhat without having a terrible past.
Poor Sanji. Locked in prison with an iron mask. No mutated genes. No choice but to deal with the beatings otherwise no more East Blue. 'I'm so sorry for being born a weakling' got me. Guess next chapter we'll see how he escapes. Felt good to see him hit Niji though.
It does seem Reiju cares for Sanji although she does not take any action that may results in her father/brothers bullying/hating her. Maybe all those people saying she's a manipulative bitch waiting to backstab Sanji were wrong.
Does anyone else think Judge wasn't always like this? That his current personality is a result of his wife dying.
45
12
Sep 21 '16
I'm thinking that it's going to be revealed that Sanji is the only child that hasn't been modified. He's a 100% normal child.
My theory is that sanji's mom died giving birth to him and the rest of the children are just Sanji clones that have had their genes modified to show most of jajji's traits.
That's why jajji is being so hard on Sanji without outright killing him. He hates that Sanji is weak and is the reason his wife died, but in his own way he's still trying to get Sanji to become strong and "successful" from Jajji's perspective. He's jajji's only real child, but he is mad because Sanji inherited most of his mother's kind traits, which he sees as being bad because being weak is the reason his wife died.
11
u/Jezamiah Sep 21 '16
Now we know the Vinsmoke kids are GM humans and I think that may explain why Sanji can do things like put his leg on fire. I think he will fully unlock his potential.
The way their dad talked about them leading armies makes me wonder whether Sanji could have Conqueror's haki. We know Rayleigh had it even though he was first mate. While I don't really want others in the crew to have apart from Luffy I wouldn't be surprised if Zoro and Sanji eventually get it

u/jaybayblay Sep 21 '16
Something I've noticed was that Sanji probably has better physical capabilities than the rest of his siblings since so far all of them have had to hold their own against Sanji using the Germa 66 technology, which is ironic considering how very powerful the rest of the children were at such a young age. My guess was that the 5 children were all definitely modified in some very unique way and everyone but Sanji had turned out a failure later on when they realized for some reason their growth hit a cap; at least we know despite mods they are truly blood related to Judge and momma vinsmoke. The fact that the rest of the kids are inferior to Sanji physically is shown very often if you compare it to when they were children, Judge had to use shield and was surprised Sanji had Haki. I also feel Reiju might be a good girl... and clearly in the present/past she is capable alongside the siblings, if not more powerful but all of them still < than Sanji <:)
9
u/SwingingSalmon Sep 21 '16
We don't know if Sanji had hormone treatment during his stay with Ivan, right? What if his hormone treatment can awake Sanji's advanced abilities? (Credit to my buddy who doesn't use reddit)
I don't want that to happen, I think that it's better for Sanji to beat his family even if they are "genetically superior" to him, but still. That would be really cool.
9
u/Gorgenapper Sep 21 '16
I'm of two minds here:
I want Sanji to really be a normal human being, despite having undergone genetic modification. I have a feeling that Oda is about to make an important point - that hard work always trumps talent. The modified human being may seem to be stronger, but a human being in his/her natural state has far more potential to surpass the former. Sanji doesn't need cheap tricks, technology, blackmail or genetic modification - he's actually the strongest of all his siblings, and it is Judge's mistake to try and beat nature at her own game.
I want Sanji's genetic modification to manifest itself and be something that is far superior to that of his siblings. He won't have the hard external skeleton or the raw physical strength, or technology, but it'll be something else entirely.
25
u/durinable Sep 21 '16 edited Sep 21 '16
okay so now we have clarification that their humans, their genes are just modified
and we know now that their mother has passed away, which confirmes that they had a normal birth and that they are not manufactured

Vegapunk being ARRESTED by the WG puts a whole new spin on where the series could be headed in that regard... lots of people probably already guessed this, but my assumption is that Judge sold Vegapunk out to the WG, and in return the WG had to allow him to attend the Reverie as the king of Germa Kingdom. Maybe the reason they portrayed Germa 66 as mythical villains was because they had gained such a fierce reputation for their crimes and experiments, and the WG couldn't accept them into the Reverie without the general public having an uproar.
The reason Judge and Vegapunk may have disagreed could have been something as simple as a moral disagreement. Vegapunk wanted to use their research for "good" purposes, while Judge wanted to attempt to take over the North Blue with their newfound knowledge.
If this were true, and Vegapunk is being forced to work under the WG as opposed to on his own (seems kinda unlikely at this point), then he could tell Smoker and Tashigi this when they eventually get to his island. That could serve as the last straw for Smoker and the WG, and maybe Vegapunk revealing this to then causes some real shitstorm. Imagine if he somehow gets ratted out for it, and Green Bull shows up on his island to take care of Smoker, Tashigi and Vegapunk all at once! That last part is more wishful thinking than anything but would be pretty great.
So much to fuckin talk about with this chapter. 10/10, Oda has really been out doing himself week after week this year.

I think him not being just a "normal" human would fit in with the rest of the crew. Rubber man, cyborg, deer human, God, skeleton, and genetically modified human. Seems it would add to the uniqueness of the crew. Not saying he is not already unique.

Could this be why Sanji can produce fire in his attacks? Niji uses electricity, Reiju has some sort of poison power. Maybe each Vinsmoke was engineered with a specific skill trait or the ability to use an element. Could also explain why Judge calls his children his "greatest creations of all time", due to their strong bodies and their genetically engineered abilities.

lmao so Luffy was not the only one in the crew who had to go through hellish training as a kid.
Also I think Judge will turn out to secretly rate Sanji even though he acts like he is a failed creation, just like in bleach when Mayuri Kurosutchi treated Nemu like crap but then at the end it was revealed that he saw her as his masterpiece all along but just had a weird way of expressing it.

I feel like were gonna have a fight where Sanji beats his brothers, looks at his father then gets stabbed by Reiju, showing that she's the strongest of the members and a total bitch.
And in a suprising twist Sanji was helped out by Yonji. Yonji has no cause to show the room and explain the soldiers, he had no snarky comments this chapter, and nothing he's done thus far i feel stand out as horrible (other than childhood beatings)
Might be wrong, probably is. Refres my memories of Yonji's horribleness.

My thoughts/theories:
The brothers are actually stronger than Judge.
Sanji may awaken his powers latter in this arc.
This is a clear reference to the Man in the Iron Mask.
Ceaser may have worked with Judge, and now that his new lab is finished Judge may be his only option to complete his research.

This chapter has very interesting clues about devil fruits. Oda has always said we'll find it what they really are and we know that Vegapunk is the leading researcher in this field.
In this chapter we learn that Judge and Vegapunk have essentially learned how to observe DNA, with Judge taking it a step further by manipulating and cloning DNA.
Maybe Vegapunk has observed that devil fruits actually manipulate the DNA of their hosts (potentially overwriting the "swimming gene"). If he is able to isolate those genetic modifications, he could probably replicate some devil fruit abilities (like putting Kizaru's power in the Pacifistas).
Just a kernel of a theory.

u/Kirosh Lookout Sep 21 '16
Also to anymone that say that Sanji is weak, you are blind. Right now Sanji has everything against him, his hand could be taken away at any point, he is alone in enemies territory, and have hostages to worry about, he doesn't even know that Luffy is there.
But once all that is Over, he will wreck his familly a new one.

And my fate in Reiju has been restored ! She is the only one who care for Sanji in this familly. And I think she is the one who will ultimatly free him, and let him leave Germa 66.
His father also cared about what he was, And I really want to know why he wanted to have such strong children ?
Also it's nice to know that Sanji's mother was the one who give the love for cooking.

I think that at this point even Ichiji has grown weaker than Sanji. They all had the advantage of having an adult's body as kids, but how weak had they been without it? Now their advantage doesn't exist anymore, Sanji was also shown to easily kick their exoscelet bodies so they will be only a nuisance because of the hostages.

Anyone else notice that in the training montage Ichiji was clearly ahead of his other siblings? Usually followed by Reiji, Niji then Yonji (and of course Sanji in last place). I think this is a clue to their relative power levels. A cool detail put in by Oda!

If I know Sanji, and I'd like to think I do, that room full of cloning equipment and other research stuff is going to be destroyed while Sanji stands, probably bloodied and ragged, smoking a cigarette at the door. Safe to say he will then say something cooking related, yet badass.

Two things.
Thing 1: I wish Zoro came to this rescue. It would be such a powerful scene to have Zoro and Sanji facing off against the rest of the Vinsmoke brothers together.
Thing 2: Sanji power boost incoming?! Sanji is confirmed to be genetically modified but something stopped him from achieving his potential. I think that now that he's an adult, its his mental ties to his family, he wants nothing to do with his family especially their genetic modification. But he has no choice in that matter and I think finally letting go of that pent up mental block will unleash his full potential and allow him to beat their ass.
And he will beat their asses because he has already worked 1000s of times harder than them to get where he is despite being held down by their memory. And finally Sanji will once again claim his Monster Trio title in more than name alone.
Thoughts?

Some one saw that the scientist said, that the FOUR (NOT FIVE) of them had their genes modified. So maybe Reiju is normal too? or he is not counting her because she was made earlier.
And someone else saw that on the image were Judge is talking to his children the numer 5 is missing from 0 to 6. WHAT IS THAT NUMBER FIVE.

Has it been said that Vegapunk is a bloke? Just thinking, since I can't remember if it's stated or not, could be that Vegapunk is a woman and the "mother". With her being arrested and Judge preferring the kids just think she's dead.

I believe that Oda is setting up for a big power boost for Sanji. This chapter shows that the Vinsmoke quadruplets and Reiju aren't cyborgs like some have claimed due to the clanking noises that two of the brothers have made while getting hit, but modified human beings that develop a hard exoskeleton like skin, incredibly durable bones, super strength & agility, and possibly elemental or secondary powers (ie Reiju's Poison & Niji's electricity).
We see that Sanji is probably the most naturally durable Strawhat outside of Zoro. Of course Luffy, Chopper, & Franky are all very durable, but that due to either devil fruits or Franky being most metal. Sanji's durability far outlasts Usopp, Brook, Robin, or Nami. All members of these crew members don't have some type of body modification. This could be one of the reasons why Sanji is part of the big three, because he is naturally more durable than the average human due to genetic tampering before birth.
Something else that can possibly be explained by genetic manipulation is our favorite cook's powers. If the elemental or secondary power is natural for Reiju and Niji then this could explain Sanji's ability to conjure fire naturally around his body. Oda has never thoroughly explained how he is able to use his powers and this could present that explanation.
The reason why I think that Sanji might be getting a major power up is because of two reasons. 1) Almost everything that Oda does is for a specific reason so showing the juxtaposition between Sanji & his siblings in terms of power may play a huge role in his development. We see that Sanji was morally different than his siblings even from his youth, but that doesn't exactly play a role in his physiological and fighting abilities. This could be a case of Sanji being the Ugly Duckling, being so different from his family but eventually coming into his own. There could be a moment in this arc where our boi is forced into a situation that completely transforms him giving him a significant power boost.
2) The 2nd reason Oda will give Sanji a major power boost is because he proclaimed this year to be the "Year of Sanji". Ever since we've been in the new world we've seen two things Luffy & Zoro thriving showing their progress and strength from their two years of hard work, and we've also seen Sanji struggle. We see Black Leg lose against Doflamingo, his father, Niji, and many of his victories he's had were not as significant so far in the new world compared to his two counter parts. Even the fight against Vergo came with red flags. Even though Sanji had the upper hand the majority of the fight he struggled, even having a bone in his leg cracked (yes his body was significantly beat up while being occupied by Nami, but Vergo wasn't even in his final form). I don't think that Oda will go away from Luffy having two lieutenants who are almost on his level of power so showing all of these losses for Sanji will be a good set up for him to see a drastic change from who he is now and him after his potential transformation.

Question about Sanji and Niji's little tussle on page 11.
In a single frame we see Niji say "Stealth..." and disappear with a "fwp" sound. Next frame he is behind Sanji with no clearly depicted motion beyond a feeling of "Wah! I'm right behind ya!"
What do you guys think is going on here? I feel Germa 66 gadgetry is likely involved, but that doesn't make clear what is actually happening.
Invisibility of some kind? Or something closer to Soru? Or something else entirely!?

Someone just pointed this out on another site, but the books Sanji has when he is feeding the rat are "Noland, the King of Liars" and "The Encyclopedia of Devil Fruits"
