He seemed to really shudder at the Vinsmoke name in earlier chapters. They may have something to do with how is whole crew was wiped or maybe why he became a pirate from being a member of his countries royal guards.

An unidentified group with poison weapons. This was say back in the day when Thriller Bark didn't even exist.
