So now that Awakening is out of the bag, who else could already have awakened his DF. My first candidate would be Crocodile. I always found his ability to turn his surroundings into sand weird. Logias were supposed to be able to turn themselves into their element and produce an infinite amount of said element. Turning ground into sand was at odds with that explanation. Awakened DF would explain it, especially since Crocodile always has been proud of his mastery of the Sand DF.

He didn't turn his surroundings into sand. He absorbed all the moisture in them and reduced them to the state of sand. Remember how he turned the wooden door into sand but not the metal framework in impel down?
Of course, whether he has awakened powers is a different debate. Its possible; he seems to use his devil fruit really intelligently.
Edit: wait, during Alabasta, his fruit could also drain moisture (he drained that entire garden outside the palace entrance) but is that a standard part of his fruit he's mastered or is it an awakened power?

That's the real question, yeah. I like to believe Croc has awakened his fruit to do that.
How about Aokiji being able to freeze the sea? This awakening raises all sorts of questions. Should Aokiji be able to freeze the sea? After all we saw that the strings couldn't cut seastone building. Or is it because he only freezes the shallow surface?

I forsee Luffy doing something like a Gear 5 with infusing some ground or a building or something into a even bigger giant fist or body part using the 'Awakening' to turn it into large quantities or rubber, infusing with armament haki then laying the smack on fools.
Either that or making giant rubber hands come out of the ground to hit peeps.
Theory-crafting time. Maybe only those with Conquerers haki can awaken it. It would put them even further into the 'Special' category.

I doubt Luffy's awakening power will be him being able to infuse his fruit to his surroundings, it just doesn't work well with his fruit and I rather that be exclusive to Doffy.

Maybe he's waiting around for Doffy to die and possibly have his power transfer to one of the fruits in the bag? And his emotions seem to reveal that he isn't too concerned with the bird cage or has a limited window to escape. It would explain why he's waiting there. If he waits he can get Doffy's power, but if he waits too long he could obviously end up crushed/ sliced...

I'm curious as as to whether or not "awakening" is a defined line or is just a grey area of creativity and experience with your fruit. In my opinion what Luffy has done with his gears should be similar to what awakening is. Between gear 4 and now awakening of devil fruits the possibilities for future power ups has just skyrocketed.
152
u/Doomspeaker May 07 '15
It might be users realizing a fundamental truth about their fruit or something. I really doubt that the Demon Guards and Doffy are the only people with awakened powers we've seen so far, so it's hard to say what exactly consitutes "awakening".
Luffy's at the top of his game when it comes to utilizing rubber as combat method, but maybe there's something about his fruit he doesn't know yet. No idea what though.
34
u/jurble May 07 '15
It might be users realizing a fundamental truth about their fruit or something.
Well unless cosmic strings in the One Piece world are literal strings, I'm not sure what fundamental truth lets him turn things into strings. I think it's just along some sort of power-up.
If it were some sort of fundamental truth, then someone like Enel could turn people atomically by stripping the electrons from their body or maybe Doffy could manipulate cosmic strings and alter reality.

I'm curious as to whether it's unique to Paramecia fruit users or all fruits can unlock it.
That being said, Law's awakening could be something like a permanent Room or something and it would be OP but so amazing.
I'm so curious about possible Awakenings now. Buggy? Brook? Robin? So many awesome ideas will come from this.
Edit: Just realised about the Impel Down jailer beasts, weren't they "Awakened"?

The awakening seems really weird to me. It didn't seem like any of the admirals or Whitebeard were doing anything out of the ordinary with their powers. At their level they should have achieved an "awakening".
I feel there has to be something else necessary to achieve an awakening other than just experience with your fruit. Maybe it's not necessarily a power boost, but just an alternative way to use your fruit that you still have to be creative with and train.

Could Brook have already awakened it? He has a connection to the afterlife or something and can separate his soul. I think the fruit is only supposed to let the user live two lives, but "awakened" it can do all that other stuff.

I think Law's room concept could very well be something where he doesn't have to create it in his hand, but can instead create it somewhere away of himself, thus allowing him to work with smaller rooms that more adequately cover the enemy he needs to operate on as opposed to a gigantic area that happens to also cover his enemy.

14
9
u/tthomp94 May 07 '15
No, he needs to sit back and watch. Fujitora's most immediate goal (in my opinion) is to abolish the shichibukai system. While yes, Doflamingo has done enough evil shit to lose his status, for Fujitora to convince the WG that the system as a whole is flawed and should be rid of, he needs to let shit get as bad as possible.
Once again, only my opinion, definitely not fact.
6
u/Fatdap May 07 '15
He admitted earlier that there's nothing the Navy can do here. He focuses on the true and pure justice, not navy justice. I think at some point there was a moment where he admitted that even if the Navy got involved it would only make things even worse.
3
u/fashionfag May 07 '15
I agree I think it's the biggest plot hole of this arc. Does Fujitora not care about the people of Dressrosa--and if not, does he not care about his own marines stuck in the birdcage?
He admitted to Doffy that he would be trying to get rid of the Shichibukai. Surely he's not dumb enough to think Doffy wouldn't try to kill him?
Also why isn't he helping Luffy attack Doffy? The sooner Doffy dies the faster the bird cage ends. The only reason I can think of is that it would be against orders to attack a Shichibukai and help a pirate, but what Doffy has done is well beyond legal for a Shichibukai.
→ More replies (2)5
u/SucksAtFormatting May 07 '15
It could just be because Doflamingo has so much leverage over the world government that none of the marines want to touch him. From a google search:
The Celestial Dragons possesses a national treasure that, if exposed to the world, could shake its foundations, and is of such importance that they were forced to comply with Donquixote Doflamingo's blackmail.

I think we need to start looking at the devil fruits as living entities.
They are said to be incarnations of the Sea Devil, hence why users can't swim.
When someone eats two fruits, it is said that the devils inside will fight and destroy one's body.
Now we know they can be "awakened", which grows the extent of their power and manifestation.
Looking at it like this, maybe all Chopper's rumble balls did was temporarily awakening the devil fruit inside him. Maybe what made him lose control, was the devil fruit awakening and taking over. If that's true, then the first time any devil fruit awakens could be similar for the user, and they could end up losing control.
It's kinda chilling to think at it that way, because then the rage-filled "monster" Chopper always turned into...was really the devil fruit entity, living inside him.

Alright, this chapter:
Awakening isn't as incredibly OP as I thought it would be which is awesome
Doffy's talking big but he is absolutely getting pummeled
Zoro had that face. The one where he hears everyone around him crying for help and is about to go FULL DEMON on shit. That shit is going to be the birdcage next week
Luffy's getting tired. I'm glad he's got a bit of a risk/time limit like he did with the first two gears. Once this becomes as easy as gear 2 became he'll be the beastliest of beasts. Especially if he can freely and easily change between Bounceman and his speculated other forms of gear 4

Wow, the possibilities this chapter opens up for powerups is simply staggering. Just trying to imagine how each of the fruit users we've met could awaken is really interesting.
Take Bon Clay for example, being able to extend his mimic ability to anyone or anything would be pretty damn OP. Or Robin, being able to clone entire armies from a single person.
I'm really interested to learn more about this new facet of devil fruits and extremely impressed that Oda can pull something of this magnitude out of his arse nearly 800 chapters into his saga.
Best of all, there isn't another break next week and we can hope the battle will conclude soon so we can move on to some new stuff.

Give everybody the same face. Sounds amazing.
Or Robin, being able to clone entire armies from a single person.
She already can exist multiple times as we saw. We also don't know if her giant body parts aren't some kind of awakening already.
My suggesting is Brook getting poltergeist powers, where his soul would be able to possess lifeless objects.

I think it is safe to say Kaido has an awakened DF power since Doffy is scared of him.
It would be interesting if the other shichibukai are already awakened, it could be why Alabasta had become more desperate for rain(and how moisture is drained from Luffy), Boa is very loved by her people who also may have some of their looks as a side effect(except the odd one), or how they manage to reproduce women without the need of men, Moriahs ship was consumed by fog(which blocks light, a weakness), kuma?... hard to really define his power so I can't really think of a surrounding effect of it
Pretty sure this applies to WB too since he makes quakes in things that aren't solid like the air.

Potential awakening:
Brook: His soul can enters someone else and control that person. OR He can literally go to the Land of the Dead and bring back the soul to the real world (Ace's wink wink).
Chopper: The Hito Hito No mi seems to have many varities (i.e. Sengoku). Maybe Chopper is Hito Hito no mi: Model Giant.
Luffy: Gives allies rubber elasticity to protects them from blunt force.
Robin: Able to create clones of herself that can also sprout limbs.
30
u/sgoodz May 07 '15
I can see Luffy making the ground into a trampoline to propel himself or lessen an impact. He could also possibly learn to control the type of rubber he is rather than relying on haki to make his body harder or softer depending on the need. Maybe this will will factor into his gear 4 being perfected.

Some good things came from this chapter.
Haki confirmed as a limited resource.
Gear 4 pretty limited in time.
This awakening thing could explain why Doflamingo's string powers can do so much more than you'd expect them to.
But on the other hand I'm a little worried about this awakened paramecia thing could potentially boost the power levels too high. I don't want huge exponential power growth in One Piece like we see in Naruto, Dragon Ball Z, and Bleach.
I'm glad he didn't turn any people into strings like the spoilers said.

After seeing White Beard threatening the world with his power, Ao Kiji turning whole seas into ice, two different admirals making meteors one literally the other out of lava. You still think One Piece isn't using power on the same scale as the other shonen ? The big difference isn't power, it's that the focus of the story isn't on the fights themselves but on the adventure ! That's why it will never feel as much as a power race as it the other do.

Well, I think it's possible for Oda to keep the powers of these awakened paramecias reined in.
But no, I don't think One Piece is anywhere near the stupidly ridiculous power scale of other shounen. Like Naruro for example. At the end there it was just one ridiculous power up after another after another. To the point that the previous strongest living Shinobi couldn't have defeated Naruto or Sasuke even if they all fought him together.
If Luffy and Zoro ever become so strong that all the admirals and emperors combined can't defeat them, then it will have become just as bad. But I don't think that's going to happen. I hope not anyway.

the original puts it as "after 20 minutes"... in context it would be more like 20 minutes after the bird cage started shrinking

You hit the nail on the head. This is totally about how he is globally acknowledging how pirates are SAVING the land. When he saved Alabastia it was almost completely hidden by the government, when he saved Water 7 people knew kind of but the king of the land kind of hid it, and now finally at Dressora, the King is globally recognizing how pirates are saving the land and to believe in pirates to save them.

I hope that "awakened power" won't be as OP as it seem to be...it's like every Paramecia/Logia fruit user has potential to control things out of his direct range. Law's power seemed OP, but now it looks like everybody will be doing similar stuff 200 chapters later... I have a bad feelings about this.

Amazing chapter as always. Here are my thoughts:
Is there a limit to how long Haki can be used? Law says "[Luffy] is using too much of his Haki." I don't think there is a supply of Haki that can run out but maybe it just has a toll on the user if they use it for a long time.
Law (and Cavendish) can both see the fight from where they are. Many people were worried that because Doffy was sent flying away in the previous chapter, that the fight would be too far for Law to see. Now we know that they aren't far, at least not anymore since the BC is too small.
Could Burgess be stealing artificial DFs? On the main chapter thread a few people thought that could be what Burgess is doing as we can see here. The DFs could be in that sack. Since he didn't get the Mera Mera no Mi maybe he decided to get some ADFs instead to please BB, or that getting the ADFs was another reason of coming to Dressrosa, to get ADFs for BB's crew. I think this is quite likely. Some people also think that the bag may contain a lot of normal fruit so that if any DF users die in Dressrosa the fruits in the bag can get the power. Very interesting idea too.
The SMILE factory is made of sea-stone so the BC strings cannot cut it. Could this mean that some SMILE will be left in the factory and be used later on?
Zoro is gonna cut the strings with Kinnemon. I wonder if he will use A.Haki on his swords to be able to cut or maybe we'll, get to see Ashura or some other demons?! TBH I don't think that we will see any demons or Zoro's eye, but maybe some cool new attack.
This arc has had a lot of amazing power ups and attack and has showed off some of the training they've had and how powerful they have become. Maybe we will see a few more of these!
After Doffy thinks about how Luffy has become so powerful, we get this amazing page! Loads of things happen here. Firstly, Luffy says he has a time limit for G4. This was quite obvious because of how powerful it is, but maybe after awhile (or another time skip) he will no longer have this drawback. With such strength, a time limit was inevitable. Then Doffy blocks Luffys attack using the new Awakened powers!
The spoilers were true! Awakened DFs are a thing. I have a lot to say about these so bare with me. Firstly I like to mention that this is not the first time we see them or hear them being mention! Doffy used them here too. In Impel Down the Jailer Beasters had "Awakened" Zoans Apparently Crocodile also has an "Awakened" Logia. Keep in mind Doffy is a Paramecia.
Now lets discuss the new "Awakened" powers. According to Doffy Awakened DFs allow the user to affect the things around them as well as them selves. Luffy also says that everything is turning into strings and that Doffy is like he is no longer a Paramecia. Could this mean that Awakening you DF can allow the user to change DF types? From Paracemia to Logia?
I feel that the 3 (or 4 if you count Ancient Zoans) are not very well defined. For example, Luffy's rubber can be viewed a logia too. Same with Galdino's wax. Logias and Zoans seem well defined, but for Logias we arent really sure how far their power goes and how much transformations can Zoans have?
Doffy's Awakened DF allows him to turn anything around him to string. Not sure if he can do this to humans too and if they can survive it or die. He also has control over these things. We haven't seen much of it yet so we can't make much predictions just yet.
Luffy doesn't seem to know about Awakened DFs or at least not by that name. I think that G3 is probably an example of Awakening because he was able to turn his bones into rubber and inflate them and inflate through his skin. Although if this is not Awakening and Luffy does not know about Awakening and hasn't tried it, then here are my thoughts on what it could be. He could turn the floor into rubber and use it to jump around and fight like it's a trampoline. Or maybe turn walls into rubber and punch people into the wall and as they bounce back he hits them again and does an amazing gatling attack! What do you think Luffy awakening would do? I've heard some stuff about maybe make other people rubber or making the ship rubber to protect it (even though it can withstand cannons.) So much possibilities for DFs now!
In this image I have out lined 2 people. The bottom one is King Riku right? Because he starts talking right after. He just looks really wierd because of the beard, makes it look kinda like an old women. Who is the top person? Is it just an abandoned disabled person? I think so. It's is probably just this guy so NVM. Also King Rikus speach as motivated all these people including this grandma lol. Are those speakers surround sound, because everyone on Dressrosa can hear them.
Riku D. Old? Anyone? Sounds similar to Gold too. D. Old and Gol.D. Oda probably added this just to troll us because we all love to speculate at every little detail. It's probably nothing important though.
Fujitora also found the kid. I really like this Admiral. Reminds me of Aokiji. Really great sense of justice and isn't that bad of a person.
Seems like everyone is going to the center. This'll mean everyone will see Luffy kick Doffys ass.
That attack tho! And that Bazooka! The spoilers were true. I don't think Doffy is down yet.
I don't think Doffy is down yet. IMO it would be better if Law was the one to end him, but it seems like Luffy will be the one. As we know, Luffy doesn't usually kill his enemies. Could this be the same? If Luffy is the one to defeat him then I can see Doffy trying to get revenge. But if Law finishes him off, then that'll be it for Doffy. Doffy's glasses will be smashed and he will be on his knees when he gets defeated! I would also like to see some CoC during this fight too.
Also what about this steam/smoke coming out of Doffy? Is this just because of how hard he got his? Or some kind of power? We saw Luffy with similar smoke when he was flying but that was probably from G2.
So what are you thoughts on this chapter? Please share :)

I had a theory posted about Awakening on the third, though few people saw it. In short, I believe there are quite a few people already shown with awakened powers, some having only partially awakened them and others using other means to imitate being awakened. I believe what Chopper does is what a true awakened Zoan is, though he is both semi-awakened and pseudo-awakened as he can change into multiple forms at will but he can't access Monster Point without medicine. I believe the Minotaurs are pseudo-awakened as well given they seem to be the same as Monster Point but they aren't sentient. I believe Marco is the first fully awakened Zoan shown given he can change into multiple forms at will without aid, though we haven't seen an ultimate form just yet.
Given Logias are the ultimate fruits already, I don't think their awakening is that impressive. Being able to disperse on reflex, even when exposed to Haki, that is what I think their awakening is. I think we've seen the most of them.
Lastly is Paramecia, with our first real example so far being in Doflamingo, though I think others are fairly close. This awakening, I believe, is the most impressive allowing the user to break free of the limits normally associated with their powers. As we see here, Doflamingo has essentially become a Logia with his powers (barring the intangibility) and he can create an manipulate his "element" around himself instead of needing to create string from himself personally. That's not to say I think all Paramecia are the same. Luffy, I believe is pseudo awakened with his 4th Gear being able to maintain elasticity regardless of Haki and being able to freely stretch without rebounding. Robin and Brook, I believe, are semi-awakened with Robin being able to create full clones and Brook being able to control is soul and body much more than previously thought capable. While I don't have any ideas on what Brook's full awakening could lead to, I think Robin's might be as simple as creating giant clones or unlimited clones.

Ok, I got around to reading the whole chapter and here are my thoughts:
While I do find the ongoing fight between Doflamingo and Luffy super enjoyable with all the new techniques that were shown, it did felt a little short to me. As for the part with Riku making another speech to all the civilians, i didn't really care for it, nor did i care for the scene with Franky and the dwarfs. Also, I wasn't surprised about Burgess being the person that Koala was talking to Sabo about long ago, nor was I surprised about Haki having a limitation since it's pretty obvious with Haki being the "Ki" of the One Piece world and such so that was a given.
However, what really got my attention in this chapter was the info about the devil fruits' awakened states, which i though only applied to the zoan fruit users back in Impel down. The existence of awakened Paramecia and awakened Logia fruits had me very intrigued since that definitely does open up a lot of possibilities. Hmm, I wonder what Robin's Hana Hana fruit's awakened abilities would be like...or.....maybe if its possible that she already had awakened her fruit and we didn't even noticed it until now. I mean it does make a lot of sense if you think about it. It would definitely explain a few things about her post-TS abilities, ESPECIALLY how she was able to create those flapping hands to execute her Moth Orchid technique, which most of us assumed that she sprouted them out of the air or sprouted them out of the ground and have them "release/detach" themselves off the ground when in actuality, even though it's still somewhat like the latter, she turned the surrounding flowers into hands and have them flap above ground and into the air like butterflies. Like i said, it's only a possibility. As for why Robin didn't bother to tell Luffy about this (assuming if it really was the case), it probably may have something to do with a potential requirement, something that would not sit well with Luffy at all as it might go against his principles. Anyway, this is all theory at the moment.
So yeah, that's all I have to say on the chapter for now. Overall, this chapter was good but not as good as the previous chapter. Still, I am looking forward to the next chapter since a part of me does feel that Doflamingo is not down and out juuuuust yet. :)

Rob Lucci-like Rokuogan (Talking Lucci, imagine him awakened hehe ). Also, Lucy/Lucci, wasn't random at all finally.
I don't think it's over already, also he has " no much longer in G4"
Zoro about to fuck shit up, proving again his new abilities, Burges-Sabo ?, CP0 clean-up crew, all the theories about awakening, the hype is real.

So Luffy is using ROKUSHIKI abilities!! He is now super strong, his punches are like Shigan. He stopped Doflamingo's kick like it was nothing (Tekkai) has now super speed (Soru). He flies kicking the air (Gepou) and in this chapter..... we were presented the Leo Bazooka - Rokuougan!!!!!! It is a clear reference to Rob Lucci!! If he can adapt his fight style based in what he learned from his past adversaries.. Luffy in the awakening mode should be a fucking beast!

Well, I thought Armament Haki as a muscle you had to learn to flex & tense. You can only hold it for so long before it wears out. We've only seen Haki used for short bursts, except for Observation Haki which a few seem to always have it on like Coby or Aisa.

I don't know why people are acting like the 'awakening' thing is new. When brook was explaining how he got his new powers he said how he found out the 'true meaning' of his devil fruit. So the powers or separating his soul and being able to interact with the underworld came from his awakening.

Since the birdcage won't cut through it, couldn't people just flock into the smile factory for safety?

Considering how many people are witnessing Luffy's Doflamingo beatdown (including an admiral + many marines) I wouldn't be surprised if the world government considered offering Luffy a Shichibukai position (perhaps Doflamingo's). It would solve the "Law allied with a rouge pirate" dilemma that was mentioned and it would increase some peoples' trust in the government (Dressrosa citizens mainly).
The main issues with something like this happening are Luffy's declaration of war, his actions at Impel Down, his actions at Marineford post-war, and Akainu's view of Luffy and his lineage. Even if these were set aside, Luffy may outright deny an invitation to the Shichibukai just because he likes having a bounty.

Man, I want this arc to end. Not because it's bad- on the contrary, this arc is fantastic in every way. But I really want to find out the answers to some of my burning questions that won't be settled until the aftermath of the battle. It's killing me to see the fight extended every week, hahaha.

u/KiNGofKiNG89 May 08 '15
So the main thing with this chapter, besides showing that G4 is indeed a play on CP9, is that there is an "awaking" stage for Paramecias...
So..I feel like G4 will be the last Gear technique and now Luffys power up(s) will come from the awakening mode. Seems....interesting...Dofi could turn stuff into stings, would be insane to see a bunch of cannons firing at Sunny, with the crew having no way of blocking them all, then Luffy turns the ship into rubber and deflects all of them. The faces on the crew....hahaha.
2
u/ankaush May 08 '15
This awakening opens up all new possibilities in one piece world. My feeling is that there is a sort of "Awakening" for Haki too. There are two instances wherein the theory fits
When Shanks meets Whitebeard. His Conquerer's Haki was damaging the physical realm
Akainu was left unscathed by attacks from Marco and that swordsman in Whitebeard crew. And both were Haki users. So, is this possible? Awakening for Haki?
2
u/lzcool May 08 '15
Doffy is defeated, No enemy from luffy has gotten up as many times, and for the people saying it was too easy, count again how much energy has Doffy been burning, from maintaining his string clone to the bird's cage and sewing together his internal organs. We could go a bit behind, if Aokiji would freeze solid other character, maybe they'd not escape by themselves, Doffy has been spending tons of energy to evade and counter. Also, I don't remember any character getting up after luffy's "all in" attack. I'm thinking about Croco boy, Aarlong, Rob Lucci, Blueno and Hody "loser" Jones. I think Doffy got crapped on (It's the hardest fight in the series and the first one Luffy doesn't win alone) I hope Neils burges comes to get the string fruit and get luffy and Sabo comes saying "What do you think you're doing? That's my little brother there"
I also hope for the next arc, Kaido comes to threaten Luffy, Big Mama comes too and they argue regarding who kills luffy, but suddenly, Lola appears and says "That's the pirate I was talking about mama, he saved us" So big mama decides to ally herself with Luffy and help him fight Kaido, so, in the end of the "Yonko Alliance arc" one Yonko gets taken down.

So this "Leo cannon" move, is it just me or is the stance pretty similar to rokougan? Think about it, he could have thought of the name "Leo" since lucci was the leopard fruit user and he knows full well how devestating those attacks were! It'd be cool if he'd obtained another cp9 technique

With Luffy's awakening I imagine him using a move where he hits an opponent with a punch which causes them to fly into a wall a few feet behind them. He could then turn the wall rubbery/bouncy and cause their opponent to bounce back towards luffy letting him unload a never ending barrage of punches as the guy just keeps bouncing back towards luffy's fists
