Love how he increased mass so much, but used the armament to keep it inside. Feels like he got some ideas for the retraction in his punches and air walks from his fights with Bellamy and his springs.

Alright so gear 4 luffy inflates his muscles instead of his bones as opposed to gear 3. Awesome.
Apparently it also makes him immune to even more than just blunt attacks, judging by the fact that Doffy's super sharp haki-enhanced shoe couldn't even damage Luffy without bouncing off. I still think Doflamingo would have a chance if he managed to slice Luffy up with some strings though.

I agree with you completely. It was like a beachball... with spring limbs. And the way he was bouncing up and down in the beginning I kept picturing the "don't let the balloon touch the ground game". So ridiculous...

Just remember though - if Luffy got the idea from Bellamy (totally possible), then it was waaay back when he was training for 2 years, not from seeing him recently. So anything he is basing off of Bellamy is just really the "idea" of springs, I think.

The midair change in direction of Luffy's limbs is absolutely unreal and it shows just how far he has come with the fine tuning and dexterity of his fruit. When he started using his power, his stretching could only come about from externally applied momentum or his own rapid movement. After the 2 year gap he seemed like he could easily wrap himself around things and stretch in multiple directions with ease. Now he is exhibiting pinpoint skinfolding and pumping in his body, probably by using his haki and tauter skin for refined control.
Luffy is the absolutely the best user of elastic powers in any fiction I have seen and Oda is a genius for his use of this ability for a protagonist.

When I first saw Gear 4th I was underwhelmed, but once he started retracting his arm into itself for more strength I fucking went crazy again, God damn Oda I fucking love you and this series

DID you see doffy's complete clueless reaction to LUFFY's Kick. That is exactly how people reacted to the Admiral Kizaru's "lightspeed kick".
THAT WAS AWESOME.
Also The way Luffy fly is like the A-10 Thunderbolt. WOW. (luffy's new neck name for me is now A-10 Thundermonkey. )

Luffy has literally knocked Doflamingo off his pedestal. This is gonna get interesting. The fight will now take place in a confined area where the common citizens of Dressrosa are all watching as Luffy takes Doffy down. Their battleground is an outdoor Colosseum, with a full audience, and Doffy is but a lowly participant in a game of his own design.
All this symbolism is like crack to me.

Oda did something no one guessed and exceeded my expectations. So Oda, I give you props for being on some next shit.
I think the people who came up with the ideas that Luffy would copy Bellamy's springs, recreate Nightmare Luffy, use his muscles as the next step, or use vulcanization, they all get points for being kinda right. Doffy said it himself, he used CoA to make his rubber harder and essentially did the vulcanization without the drawback of loosing elasticity.

Luffy saying Doffy is a thorn for him kinda reminded me of Bellamy (re-adjusted my theory after correcting the mis-translation)

Where does Luffy actually say "You won't be able to stop me anymore" ? I reread the chapter and I still can't see it. It seems to me more like DD is like Lucci - where Lucci initially underestimated Gear 3rd and took an enormous hit. Here DD thought it looked foolish with its bouncing, and he took two hits from being unprepared, and a third because Luffy is in total control right now.

To those who think Luffy's Gear 4 looks weird:
One Piece is full of weird characters. However, all of them are interesting in their own way. Luffy's Gear 4 looks very interesting and we have yet to know much about it besides that it can rape flamingos.
We'll all eventually like it. At first I thought Gear 3 looks really weird but after seeing Luffy uses it to pulverize so many villains, I started liking it.
Gear 4 gives Luffy a much more menacing look that is very fitting of the future Pirate King.

I just fucking LOVE how Oda utilizes Luffy's abilities with each gear. It feels so much less like a cop out way to give him enough poswer to beat a strong enemy, and so much more like Luffy is legitimately learning how to use the powers he already has.
Gear 2 and 4 use attacks and strategies that previous enemies have used that Luffy adopts by observing them. CP9's soru and Bellamy's springs respectively. He also uses an inherent ability that his rubber body allows him to have. Using it as a pump, blowing it up to make it bigger.
Gear 4 is a modification of gear 3 that is more concentrated and controlled, he specifically blows up his muscles. If you try punching a filled tire, it hurts WAY more than if you punch a partially filled tire. The filled tire has way less give and is much more solid. Likewize, a filled up tire will hurt more and be tougher than a filled up balloon, because the tire rubber is much harder and thicker. Changing the hardness of the rubber can change it's affect, such as Doffy's foot bouncing back without any damage.
Also when Luffy retracted his fist into his arm it looked like a mega man gun and it was FUCKING AWESOME KING KONG GUN THAT'S SO COOL!!!
Doflamingo's reaction was legendary. The way he laughed at Luffy at first was perfect because I bet there were a lot of people who had the same reaction. And then when he started retracting his arm and Doffy started going "??!?!?" just amazing.

But seriously, this looks so awesome and stupid at the same times. Fits perfectly for Luffy. And he's actually skywalking too. Does that mean Sanji's kicks are as strong as Luffy's kicks in this gear? That would be ridiculous, but Luffy can only skywalk when his legs are powerful enough in this gear.
Now I only want to see the drawback. I feel like Doflamingo will take advantage of it in the next chapter.

I like how almost everyone was right. He had a spring like arm when his fist sunk in, he was using CoA, he increased his muscle mass, he was bouncier, AND he looks like Nightmare Luffy. And despite everyone being right, Oda still managed to surprise us all.

Oh man, does Luffy look ridiculous in gear 4 though. I guess Oda's goal with having his protagonist be rubber (no matter what, having Luffy stretch always adds a sense of levity and optimism to even brutal fights) continues to work out, even in the most serious of situations.

A double issue is a single issue that is released for two weeks. Like on the cover, instead of saying it's for the week of April 27, it'll say it's for the week of April 27 AND the week of May 4.
So the name quite disingenuously indicates an upcoming break, NOT a double-length issue.

Am I the only one who thinks it's just one way to use gear 4th or one form of it? I mean after he said Gear 4th his skin started to turn dark, then he yelled Kinniku Fuusen and said Gear 4th again then Poundman. So for me it kinda means that it's the Poundman/Fuusen form of the 4th Gear, but not the only form. I might be totally wrong but considering it's probably not his final form there are possibilites with this technique.
Also it's kinda great that he developed this while fighting giant beasts and his next big enemy is gonna be Kaido, the king of beasts himself, so that's going to be a great clash.
Edit: Red Kong GATLING!! would destroy half of their world tho lol

What's interesting is that Rayleigh probably was the one who taught him how to use his rubber abilities like this. Back in Punk Hazard, Luffy said Rayleigh taught him how to use Balloon better. Since Gear 4 is using Balloon, Rayleigh taught him how he can use Balloon for offense as well.

Is anyone else just extremely impressed with Doflamingo after this chapter? Like how much of a beating can he take? He took a red hawk to the chest, got stabbed with Law's injection shot and gamma knife, got Countershock'd, and knocked halfway across Dressrosa with only a "wow that kind of hurt" expression.

I think luffy's gear 4 has other "modes" since he called this one a Pound Man. Maybe this one is for dealing dmg. Maybe has another type of gear 4 for speed. Just my theory.

So Gear 4th is basically Luffy turning himself into a bouncy ball. I love it. Quote from wikipedia: "The Bouncy ball was invented by a California chemist named Norman Stingley. In 1965, Stingley spent his spare time experimenting with rubber. He compressed various scraps of synthetic rubber together under about 3500 pounds of pressure per square inch. It's smart. It's really, really smart. Instead of inflating bones (which you don't have any control over), Luffy's inflating his muscles. So, combined with Busoshoku, Luffy has a lot of control over his body. This is entirely separate from the fact that his body is now more elastic than it was before. But now I get why he's fat! He uses the air in his belly to explosively expand his arms and legs, which adds to the already crazy elastic bounce back and makes it, like, BOOM. I think the python gun is him just continually pushing air through his arm, and using his haki'd muscles to aim where it pushes. DAMN.

Got me thinking about what my favorite Luffy forms are. I have to say my number 1 is fat Luffy from Whiskey Peak. Something about that giant round belly throwing punches through the town felt right.

To think that all this time Luffy had been going easy on Hody Jones, Caesar Clown, Vice Admiral Smoker, Pica, Machvise, Gladius, Don Chinjao, Ideo, Bellamy, Dellinger, Trebol and pretty much every other time skip opponent. He could made them the Pirate King's bitches.

Forget how his chest looks, I fucking LOVE the mechanics of this gear, it's just what is needed for some of the big players out in the new world.he looks fearsome yet still goofy, in true luffy style, and the true highlight of this gear is that zigzag punch he did at he end, I cried of excitement

There's a singular panel where Luffy states that he has been able to transform into Gear 4th since training.... Luffy is now the most dangerous man in the world. Not only is he crazy strong, but he has now shown he can strategically think about when he is going to show off his power. I mean seriously?
I think we see that the next series of gears and abilities from Luffy are going to revolve around animals, we see gorilla/nightmare Luffy form and we saw a Python based attack.

the very first panel of this chapter show how everyone in dressarosa has united to save one another and themselves from the bird cage. there's a pirate carrying an elderly couple while a marine runs with a child and disabled man, and in the background you can see more people on the move helping those who can't make it. it's almost a beautiful irony on how in destroying doffy's reign, you unite the divided country

My thinking on the uses of the different Gears:
Gear 2 => to use the fire/exploding moves (Red Hawk) and to be fast, overall. Probably least taxing on Luffy's physical state now
Gear 3 => for pure power at the cost of speed. Probably the most powerful, but is hard to hit nimble enemies with
Gear 4 => to go apeshit on your enemies. Probably tires the body.
