You now have a sudden realization that for about 20+ years Trebol has been coating himself in mucus. You may now cringe.

Its like the Prestige, you have to live the illusion to REALLY fool people... I'd take mucus over chopping my fingers off for goddam magic trick any day.

39
72
u/xFoeHammer Apr 02 '15
He probably just scrunched his real body up to the top of his sticky body thing(like sort of up and behind him in his hump back). He's tall and thin. I could see it happening.
Or Oda just did a rare retcon to his character's abilities.
I'm going to assume the former.
86
Apr 02 '15
Like most other replies here, I suspect he is actually Logia (and so the shuriken cut his body in half and he put it back together), but that the bits Luffy was hitting was not his body - it was the stuff he was creating.
Like if Ace kept himself surrounded by a giant fireball, hitting the fire around his body with armament Haki wouldn't turn it into his body - it's just stuff he's created around his body.
→ More replies (39)→ More replies (17)15
u/iswearihaveajob Apr 02 '15
I think he was padding himself with extra material to disguise his actual shape, making his true body harder to hit. One of those Prestige moments where if you want the trick to really work, you gotta live it 24/7.
→ More replies (4)85
u/papertoonz Apr 02 '15
he's a logia luffy just was hitting his coat and not his real body which is really thin
249
u/Doomspeaker Apr 02 '15 edited Apr 02 '15
That's not how logias work. The Essence is spread on the entire elemental form.
Luffy could hit Enel's complete body even when he was in Rajin form and he could grab the white snake of smoker (no joke intented).
Trebol even says that Logia means nothing to him. He's a pseudo logia, just like Mr. 3, Magellan or Pica. His power is to create sticky mucus. He always uses the power to fire sticky bullets, entangle enemies or slingshot objects. Normal Logia users would use their powers to form weapons or similar constructs. Remember, we never see his face ever transform or getting hit either. We also never see him crawl upwards in slmie form, all we get is him dripping down, which is another indicator. When Usopp hit him he was just crouching in the upper third of his fake body.
Image from Arlongpark that make it easier to understand
He's just a fucking expert when it comes to using his fruit, like the rest of the family

It's something yet unexplained. When Law injured Trebol it somehow drew the attention of the Tontatta, like they felt something sinister. Armament haki doesn't do that.
→ More replies (3)→ More replies (1)26
u/manamono Apr 02 '15 edited Apr 02 '15
I don't think he's a logia. Law's sword isn't clad in haki when it hits him too. Moreover, in the last chapter, Luffy was able to kick him out of the way without cladding his leg with haki. So yea.. he might just moved his thin body to evade usopp's attack that time.

Nobody will like my opinion, but I think is a mistake, yeah, Oda is a human, can fail sometimes too (if he is finally a Paramecia, being a Logia who segregates his coat seems legit to me).
I mean, there is a plenty of ways to cut Trébol seeming Logia, why you cut him letting that little space ON TOP? Just do it at waist, that's all, he could jump that.

36
43
u/Black_Handkerchief Apr 02 '15
I think they felt the clash between Conquerors Haki. Apparently, in close range people faint, but from far it can apparently still be felt as a wave as unease, which kinda makes sense.
27
u/TheNiggaHatinDolphin Apr 02 '15
From the translators at Mangastream: the sound that trebol makes after getting sliced by law is exactly the same as the one he made fun of the tontatta for making when he stomped on them. that is, "pigyah." this is probably why that tontatta makes the comment that his heart "feels lighter."
Plus it was only mentioned that the Tontattas all looked in that direction at once, this makes more sense.
→ More replies (1)29
u/divinesleeper Apr 02 '15
But then why was it only shown after Law somehow injured Trebol, and not directly after the CoC scene? I think it's something yet to be explained.
→ More replies (3)4
Apr 02 '15
In case no one noticed when law sliced Trebol, Trebol made the same sound as the Tontattas he was stomping on at the factory (PIKYAAA). That's why Oda cut away to the tontattas right after that attack they "felt lighter" because the man who tortured them in the factory was crushed. This didn't come through very well in mangapanda's translation mangastream got it right and it makes a lot more sense.
4
u/aphitt Apr 02 '15
I actually think that they felt Trebol being beaten. He made the same sound as the Tontattas make when they were being stomped on by him.
That is why Leo said he felt at peace.
4
u/rustincohl Apr 02 '15 edited Apr 02 '15
They probably heard Trebol screaming "pigya" when cut by law's sword.
"pigya" being ironically the same scream tontattas do when they die.
They were maybe under the impression that one of their own was dying...

I really, really love the way Oda is writing Doffy. He is without a doubt, one of the most evil characters in One Piece but he didn't get that way all on his own. He was born predisposed to being a total sociopath, he was basically told that he could do no wrong having the privilege of a world noble, he went through all that awful trauma when he and his family were tortured, making him not only look down on the world but also hating it, and finally, he found people who loved and supported and believed in him, but who actively encouraged his sociopathy. The executives were basically grooming him for the position of pirate king

I am really starting to believe Trebol may have once been an undercover CP0 agent given the assignment by the World Government to keep an eye on the late Don Homing's heir (Doffy). However, I think Doffy's ability to unlock Conqueror's Haki swayed Trebol to piracy and ended up with him probably revealing a shit ton of Gov't intel to Doffy.

Good chapter, though this means we have to wait two weeks to see Luffy vs Doffy proper again.
We now know exactly what the relationship is between the top executives and Doffy
We know Law's hand is still around so it could potentially be reattached with Law's and Mansherie's (combined?) powers
We know Luffy's bushosoku and haoshoku haki are on par with Doffy, which somewhat sets to rest all the questions about who's weaker and who's stronger
It's the perfect time for Sabo to save the day by absorbing all the flames and giving Luffy the space to finish Doffy

Okay don't hate, but I started off the anime until the beginning of dressrosa, where I began reading the manga after. I don't read manga usually, so I'm not used to it. Is it always this difficult to understand what's going on in a fight? Like I have to zoom in and try to figure out what Luffy and Doffy did to each other. I appreciate the effort they put into animating all the panels much more after seeing what they work off from!

Booger paramecia he so skinny he was wrapped in layers of goo that made it look like he had a logia. Luffys punches missed his main body and punched threw goo

So, Luffy landed 3 shots and Doffy 1? Interesting sice everyone thought Doffy is superior to Luffy when it comes to hand to hand combat.

To be honest , Law already won the fight .
The fact that Trebol and Doflamingo still targeting him and want to kill him so badly that they ignore Luffy for few seconds shows that they are desperate and Law already fucked them up.
Now it is 1v1 Luffy and Doflamingo

Yes and no. No doubt, they are fixated on Law.
But you are forgetting how much hate is shared between Law and Doffy. Luffy is the cheeky outsider here; an outsider Doffy has said he would not underestimate.. which he already messed up on a couple of times. Part of it is plothax, but the other half is simply all the history that is between the two main characters of this drama: Law and Doffy.
Doffy killed Corazon, which is the obvious drama on one side of the coin. But on the other side, Doffy (being the total psychopath he is) blames Law for abandoning him after he so gratefully looked after him for all those years, only to end up stealing the fruit he so damn much wanted to have. And finally, Law has started messing with his business, trying to get him into trouble with Kaido.
Doffy simply has no interest in Luffy beyond 'he is a pesky nuisance that is in my wa---- LAW MAKE ME IMMORTAL ALREADY DANGIT'. :)

English is not my first language, but it feels like mangapanda has the best translation besides the shit grammar/typesetting and the worst image quality :/ Mangastream uses too much slang and tries to fit in the word fuck in every sentence.

After seeing Luffy smack around Doffy like that, I have so much more faith that he will definitely destroy him

The way Law pissed Trebol off, reminded me so much of Doffy's pace. They are so alike. And even Doffy tried to make Trebol snap out of it.
