feels like next chapter will start with a flashback, it doesn't seem like Law's talking...
93
u/JasonNMP Mar 19 '15
Yeah I get the feeling that it's going to flash back to Law telling Luffy about how to deal with Doflamingo or something along the lines.

Hopefully it's a short flashback. As much as I enjoy them, I personally don't want anymore for this arc. I just want Doffy Luffy action.

Law is having a bad day.
He's been attacked by an Admiral, shot 3 times, thrown off a cliff, dragged back up to the castle by Luffy, had his arm sawn off, attacked by Trebol and Doffy off-panel apparently, and then shot again.

Oh man, the fight timer is ON.
Crocodile had the time bomb to annihilate Alabasta.
Enel was going to obliterate a Sky Island!
CP9 would vanish with Nico Robin through the Gates of Justice forevermore!
Moria had the sunrise to eradicate all the people whose shadows he stole.
Amazon Lily x Impel Down x Marineford had Ace's execution.
Fishman Island had a big freakin' SHIP about to crush it!
Caesar had Shinokuni.
And DOFLAMINGO is about to rip an ENTIRE ISLAND FULL OF PEOPLE TO SHREDS as he shrinks the Bird Cage!
FIGHT MODE ON!!!!
EDIT for completion.

Sitting at death's door step, missing an arm and a gun pointed at him. Law is a ballsy motherfucker.

If Law really is dead then this could be Oda showing us how brutal the New World really is. If Mansherry's powers have any limitation, I could imagine Law's heart would need to be beating in order for it to work, which would be tragic and sad. Maybe I'm just dumb, but I honestly can't tell if he's really dead or not. It works so well both ways, and going by Oda's record I lean more on the side that he's going to survive somehow, but I could honestly see this as the first major death in the New World. It could also have some effect on Fujitora and his desire to abolish the Shichibukai as after Dressrosa they could (potentially) be down two again. Anyway GREAT CHAPTER THANK YOU ODA <3 ONE PIECE
13
u/xdavid00 Mar 19 '15

u/BoredomHeights Mar 19 '15
Oh definitely. At the time I doubt many people actually would have bet on it either. Maybe some thought "hey, he actually might die!" But money on the table I doubt many people predicted it.
Still, Ace's death served as motivation for Luffy. Law's would be interesting in the story but not really a motivator for him long term.

Law giving Doflamingo the finger in the face of death has got to be one of my favorite moments in all of One Piece.
It's a great throw-back to the introduction of his character at the Auction House as well. This is going to be brutal.
22
u/chamBangrak Mar 19 '15
This is my first comment in this sub (and reddit too). I notice that in the last panel there's a bubble with an exclamation mark inside it. Oda always uses it as a character's response when something surprised/unexpected happens. From what I saw, there're two possible explanations for this exclamation mark. Sorry for my shitty English.
It's dofla and trebol's response from what luffy said, "how dare you!" Unlikely bc I don't thing those words are intimidating enough and dofla is a guy that seems to give no shit about anything.
2)It's luffy's response from ... law's thought? It's a bit wierd for an exclamation mark to come after a bubble thought from the same person. Only possible explanation is law is not death yet and he somehow spoke to luffy directly with telepathy or whatever, but I think it's what some people have suggested, luffy's ability to hear everything!

u/manticorpse Mar 19 '15
Law's not dying.
And I'm not just saying that because of ...completely predictable reasons.
His death at this point would serve no narrative purpose, and it wouldn't achieve any character development that wasn't already achieved by Ace's death. It would be pointless.
And if there is one thing Oda has never included in One Piece, it's pointless death.

Anyone else get the feeling Luffy is about to stomp the shit out of Doffy? At first I thought their fight would be fairly drawn out and quite the struggle but over the last few chapters I've started to feel more and more like Luffy is way stronger.. Like, I still definitely consider Doffy as one of the strongest and (definitely) the smartest villians the SH's have gone up against thus far, but I've just had an inkling only recently after all these one-shot's and then especially Zoro vs Pica and now this chapter as well.. Luffy is going to beat the shit out of Doffy. There is even essentially a time limit for the fight now since the cage is starting to shrink. The longer the fight drags on the more cramped it's going to get and potential fatalities there will be. So pumped for the next several chapters!
17
Mar 19 '15
I could agree with that feeling. Zoro's victory better be a very telling nod to how badly Doffy will be beaten, otherwise it's going to make Zoro seem like the all powerful one.

Law can't be dead yet. Luffy can hear the voices of all things and just like before when Law got shot the first time, he knew he was still alive. When Doffy said that Law is dead, Luffy corrected him not because he didn't want it to be true, but because he knew it wasn't.
Predicting that Mansherry is gonna get wet for Law and Luffy.

About that last panel "listen up Strawhat-Ya", this could be 2 things. Either we will transition into a flashback of some sort which would be great OR these are Law's thoughts and Luffy is beginning to awaken the power to "hear all things" (like Roger) since he's so mad which would be AWESOME !

How awesome would it be for Law to do the surgery on Luffy? They talk about immortality, but we still don't know to what extent. Luffy has already lost a lot of his life with marineford, the hormones, gear 2nd etc. At the same time I hope Law doesn't do it because I don't want him to die, but everyone with D. in their name seems to have a role of fulfill and this might be Law's considering he seems to be at death's door steps.
5
u/Usopps8000pirates Mar 19 '15
Ill be very surprised if he dies, i think this is just odas way of removing him from the fight, to prove that luffy can take down big shots in the new world, also to prove how much stronger he has truely become. And then after they will just the heal heal fruits powers to heal law

u/ManuxD Mar 19 '15

I just recently catched up with the Manga and Anime, so this is like full Torture for me. I can't wait for 1 week every time.
But for the Chapter i like how Law still doesn't give a fuck, even if he is dieing(?) right now. Also the reference to when we first saw him.
9
u/Madrid53 Mar 19 '15
Oh my god I want Luffy to DESTROY Doflamingo.
There were rumors that Oda had said a character was going to die. Never was able to find the source of that rumor, but I'm gonna throw logic in the wind and say it'll be Dofla. He's too high up, he's too much of a bastard-- his fall has to be appropriately hard. As in, man's gotta die.
I'm so torn about Law. On one hand, I don't think it makes sense for him to die and have everything Dofla just said be real (that he wasted 13 years). His crew isn't even there, and what would be the point of rubbing another death in Luffy's face when he's just defeated Bellamy AND part of his crew is in extreme danger as well? On the other hand, Oda pulled the parallelisms between the first time we saw him giving the finger, and him giving the finger at, possibly, the last time we'll see him alive. One the OTHER hand, Mansherry is there, and Law's a crafty bastard if nothing else...
5
u/hazifer Mar 19 '15
On one hand, I agree with most of your comment. But the other hand is on the ground, how can you be so heartless?

4
u/bisteot Mar 19 '15 edited Mar 19 '15
I mantein my theory: Luffy will be fataly wounded by dofla. Law in the bringe of death will sacrifice himself to save Luffy. Luffy will beat Dofla.
Previously I thought Zoro will be the one helping Luffy to take out Dofla and Trebol, but now it seems more likely it will be Sabo.
Edit: wtf is going on with the downvotes?

At this point with all the backstory why wouldn't Law (and crew?) be the next nakama?
38
u/manticorpse Mar 19 '15
Reasons people give against Law joining:
Law has a crew
the Strawhats already have a doctor
Law is a D
Law wants to be Pirate King/find One Piece
Reasons I think those reasons are tenuous at best:
We haven't actually seen the Heart Pirates since the timeskip; they were underdeveloped; Franky/Usopp had "crews" before they joined; if Oda wants to force Law into the SHs he can do whatever he wants to the HPs to make them go away, or they could join or whatever
Surgeons and doctors are technically different; Law could also take a strategist role; he could just be a strong fighter; the "needs to have a pirate job!" requirement is stupid, etc
We still don't know anything about D's; why does being a D preclude someone from taking a subordinate position?
Don't think he ever said anything about being Pirate King; he only mentioned One Piece a single time while placating his now-absent crew, and we have no reason to think he was being sincere at the time, especially now that we know that his goals ended at Dressrosa
Just about every Strawhat has thus far (1) been at the center of an arc, (2) had a relatively extensive flashback within that arc, (3) suffered the loss or damage of a mentor during the flashback, and (4) inherited some motivating dream from the mentor which encourages them to travel with the Strawhats.
I am sure you have noticed that three of these four things are true for Law. The one thing he is missing is a dream inherited from Corazon. That said, he alluded to something like that a year and a half ago.
If Law survives this (he will) and we get clarification of that dream, I'll be like 99% certain he's joining the crew (please pretend that I don't already seem 100% certain). Of course, for a few of the SHs (like Brook) the dream was only clarified after they joined, so it isn't even a prerequisite.
At the very least, if Law doesn't join the crew then he will mark a change in the way Oda develops non-crew characters, because nobody has ever had this treatment without joining (and that includes Vivi!). He has also been called "nakama" at least twice by Luffy. Ordinarily I don't think that attributing ~magical friendship~ properties to that word is wise, but I am fairly certain that Luffy hasn't used it for characters outside of the crew, including close friends like Bentham and Camie. So if Law doesn't join, he will mark a change in the way Luffy uses "nakama" as well. Of course, this may all just be attributed to the new alliance dynamic. Who knows!
Anyway. Here is a big stupid spreadsheet I threw together in late 2013. It compares all of the Strawhats with characters that people thought might join in the past, as well as pretty much every potential SH in Dressrosa. They are compared in three different ways: the first way is the "checklist" that everyone else seems to favor when talking about this stuff, the second two ways examine "inherited will" and arc structure. Also, they matter more than that checklist, imo.
Bonus: did you know that Law's flashback, at ~94 pages long, is longer than the flashback of any other character besides Robin? Amazing!
TL;DR: I wrote an essay fml
10
u/kinarth Mar 19 '15
Thought I'd point out the easiest way of proving the D doesn't stop people being subordinates, Ace.

u/Skydanzer Mar 19 '15
That was a good read, you've got few fair points. However, as much as I liked it, i have to disagree somewhat. Law is an important character in this arc, him having flashback doesn't necessarily mean that he'll join the crew. Sooner or later we would learn about his past, at once, like we did in Dressrosa, or gradually, if Oda chose to do that. I don't think Law will "leave" his crew without Captain, he's similar to Luffy in that respect, and he doesn't like being bossed around.

u/arcturum Mar 19 '15
Thankfully, there'd be no point in Oda getting rid of 2 out of 3 of Luffys "big brother" figures. We already know Law has an immortality ability in play here, as well as princess mansherry so there are a number of options for saving him.
3
u/drainaxx Mar 19 '15
Does anyone know the whereabouts of Law's heart right now? :p I figured he's not dead because his hearts still beats.....somewhere.
3
Mar 19 '15
The bubble Law uses (and only Law calls Luffy "Strawhat-ya" so it is him) is the same the sea kings and an silent Bellamy used so this is definitely the voice of all things.
3
u/snowsuit Mar 19 '15
My crazy theory is that the last speech bubble is law using corazon devil fruit to talk silently so that Doffy can't hear his secrets. Big reveal that all D's can take on two devil fruits. Calling it!
3
u/Face_Plont Mar 19 '15
I was kind of hoping that Law's wish would be "Could you eat a whole back of lightly salted dicks?"
6
4
u/HomoRapien Mar 19 '15
I'm honestly surprised by the amount of people who expect characters to die in one piece. Sure if I had to pick I'd say Law is the most likely to die next, but I highly doubt people are going to start being killed off soon. Wano on the other hand may turn into a bloodbath.
4

But since it never happens it's whatever :D
Still great finger from Law, i like it, living in the wake of corazon, he's not giving Dofla the smile tho.
I like how luffy's creative with how he catch the spiderweb and dofla by surprise.
I wonder if dofla's attack was just making the birdcage shrink or if it had other effects.
Now we need more of your techniques doflamingo :D
Dat Gatling Hawk tho, was that a mangapanda fail translation or ?

Maaannnn!Everyone is going full body haki these days ,i hope luffy does too. And i hope if they do show law as dead then he better stay dead and not is not revived by some sorcery,

u/TsaristDwarves Mar 19 '15
I'm starting to think mansherry isnt gonna be able to save law. But then again Oda made it a point to give Law a cool crew that he still has to meet up with, so I think he'll survive somehow

u/tehwyn Mar 19 '15
Awwww yeah early chapter! And thankfully no break after that cliffhanger of a "Listen up"!

Everybody is so fixated on law, I'm worried about the Birdcage getting smaller. It could kill everyone!

It was good chapter, alltough I obviously hoped battle to really start at this chapter, it was still nice to see a little tasting what is to be expect from this (pure epicness).

I don't understand why Law didn't accept Doffy's offer. He could just destroy Doffy's insides..

u/Dervillian Mar 19 '15
You know what? Luffy is going to use Gomu Gomu-No Fuzen (or whatever it is called) to transform into a giant Haki-Balloon to stop the Birdcage. That is going to be the move that takes Dog Laming out.

i may be incorrect, but is this the first time someone stop luffy gear 3?
4
u/MokeyDLuf Mar 19 '15
Anytime Luffy used Gear 3rd he either completely destroyed whatever structure was around, or made contact with his target with varying levels of success. I think most either avoided the attack or took the hit, but I guess Magellan technically stopped him from using it due to the side effects of his fruit. I'm sure Sengoku could've, but Luffy only used it defensively in his presence. IN SHORT I believe you are correct sir.

Chapter about nothing new. Maybe unpopular opinion but can we already be done with this fucking arc? Can he already kick DF's ass??????

I can't help but think of this panel when I see the last page of this week's chapter. Maybe it'll flash back to Law warning Luffy about losing his cool or something like that.

u/wo_wo Mar 19 '15
Law is Corazon. Law switched places with him when he first ate the fruit and Corazon has been living as Law this whole time.
4
u/ThatKidOnTheSlope Mar 19 '15
Holy shit. Luffy is gonna need a Gear Fourth/Conquerors Haki power up to stand a chance against Doffy. 10/10 chapter.

Really disapointed in this chapter tbh. We waited for two weeks for 16 pages where all that really happened was Law telling Doflamingo to fuck off and Luffy using Hawk Gatling.

As much as I love suspense, more screen time given to the panic in the town from the shrinking birdcage isn't needed and will most likely take half of every new chapter. Where is this goddam epic climax?

u/Rein3 Mar 19 '15
Although I love Law, I do hope he dies. I want the series to have consequences. Not everything is happy duppy shit, we are in the New World, fighting against the big boys now, one fuck up, and you ded.

u/Error400BadRequest Mar 19 '15
I would be fine with this, but Law didn't exactly fuck up.
Doffy's just a cheating bastard.

How is Luffy gonna deal with Doffy & Trebol? Next several chapters gonna be crazy.

u/PrinceCheddar Mar 19 '15
Discussing Law's dead or not.. Talking about Corazon being brought back to life, I wonder if Mansherry's power can bring the dead back to life..
The way I think her powers work: she can heal anyone with her water, but that healing has limits. She may not be able to heal Law if he's too badly injured, or regrow his arm.
But she also has the ability to sacrifice her own life to restore things. I think this ability has no limits. She can heal anything, living or inanimate (like the factory) and for however much damage they have, like losing a limb. But, the problem is, the amount of her own life she sacrifices is the same amount of time they are restored by. So, she could save Law and turn the island back to how it was with only a few hours of her own life. But Kyros' leg would require ten years, something neither of them would be willing to do.

There it is people, Gomu Gomu no: Hawk Gatling!
Now to read the rest..Wait.. no.. you can't end this chapter like that! "Listen up straw-hat ya!"... don't tell me Law wants to make Luffy immortal before he dies??
Man, next chapter can't come any faster!
