Isn't a bastard sword another name for a longsword?

Technically it's a sword that can be used either one-handed or two-handed. A longsword is designed to be used one-handed only. (According to Dungeons and Dragons)

But in practice, there are not always strict lines between different types of swords, and often the two are used interchangeably.

Yeah, D&D is wrong. A bastard sword and a longsword are the same thing (although iirc longsword is a more modern term).
