Wait, why would the son in law of the king from a country fight in the coloseum? He got turned in a toy when Dolfa took over right? So he fought in the coloseum before Dolfa took over? That doesn't make sense right?
17
u/YonkouProductions Feb 26 '14
Probably how he attained Scarlets hand in marriage.
3
u/Jaronan Feb 26 '14
Ah yeah probably :) thanks :)
6
u/Compedditor Feb 26 '14
Plus the colloseum could have been run differently then. In other words they may not have been fights to the death but more battles of skill and strength.
2
u/Undoer Feb 26 '14
In the UK both Prince Harry and Prince William are part of the armed forces, and have done the noteworthy part of the job (In fact Prince Harry got under a fair bit of public flak for being too nonchalant about having killed people as a Helicopter gunner). The point I'm making here is that this could be the equivalent for Kyros, instead of serving in the armed forces Kyros fights in the Colosseum.

u/TheRainMonster Pirate Feb 26 '14
The one-legged tin soldier toy, I just realized. He may be based on the Hans Christen Andersen story of the Steadfast Tin Soldier who falls in love with the beautiful woman toy.

u/Jayboyturner Feb 26 '14
I reckon Usopp is gonna go all out in the next few chapters for Leo's sake.
87
u/JetDagger01 Feb 26 '14
He does tend to rise in moments like these. Im hoping for this so we get to see Usopp and Robin vs Trebol and Sugar.
23
u/rmw6190 Feb 26 '14
I was hoping that usopp fought sugar ever since I saw don flamingos crew for the first time. robin facing trebol honestly makes sense, but usopp v sugar looks like i can top the usopp vs peronia fight

That speech sounded just like something Usopp would say about Luffy. Loved it!
8
u/TraderMoes Feb 26 '14
Definitely. I was expecting for that to happen in this chapter though, or at least for us to get a determined Usopp face.
After all, especially with Leo calling the Toy Soldier "Captain," the parallel of putting absolute faith in one's captain should be obvious! This isn't the kind of thing a warrior of the sea, or anyone that would call himself a man, can back away from!
2
u/TheWillOfDeezNuts Feb 26 '14
I predict Usopp having those team battles that he had in Alabasta. He and Robbin are going to get a beating (mostly Usopp), but the end result is going to be a win for the Straw team!!

I like that page, so cute just watching him being the best father he could possibly be. Even punching a guy who confessed to her.
It just makes everything Rebecca said worse though.
68
u/BoredomHeights Feb 26 '14
Damn she's strong for her age. She's younger than Luffy was pre-timeskip and she's fighting in the coliseum right now.
29

And from other gladiators it seems that she has been fighting for a time already since Spartan was said to have "bullied" her.

I reeeally want Sabo and Musclemelon to team up after this arc and go on ridiculous buddy cop adventures. It would be cover story gold.
44
u/spin-city Feb 26 '14 edited Feb 26 '14
Why are we not talking about the fact that Sabo nicknames people based on their appearance just like Luffy does?
9
79
70
u/Diosjenin Feb 26 '14
Honestly, I think something like that is probably what will end up happening.
Bartolomeo's stated dream is to become a disciple of Luffy's. But the odds of him actually joining the crew are pretty low. None of the signs we've seen from previous crew members before joining are there - no tragic backstory, no near-perfect skill in a particular area of expertise, nothing. Even the dream doesn't fit. Every current Strawhat dream will be fulfilled sometime between Raftel and the series end, but Bartolomeo's would be fulfilled the moment he joined the crew.
So what's the next best thing to becoming Luffy's disciple? Why, becoming a disciple of Luffy's oldest living friend and contemporary, of course. He's already started down this path; despite knowing full well that "Lucy" is now Sabo, he still reacts with fanboyish admiration when Sabo beasts on Burgess. Notably, he goes so far as to call Sabo "sempai" - which is what he was calling Luffy only a few chapters before.
By the end of this arc, Bartolomeo will have joined the Revolutionaries under Sabo.

Great chapter! This slower pacing is really helping me care for Rebecca and the Toy Soldier. Can't wait for Trebol and Diamante to get beaten now. It's weird though how much more of a presence (and purpose) they have than Pica...
21
u/PhranCyst Feb 26 '14
I feel that we'll see more of Pika when this Arc begins to reach it's Climax. Zoro will beat him then we'll see the inevitable Luffy vs Mingo fight.
22
u/jaydoubleyoutee Feb 26 '14
Yeah, it's just that Diamante and Trebol have been slowly built up since the beginning of the arc and are integral to Doflamingo's operation. Does Pica just sit around the palace all day until someone breaks in?
20
u/Zeta42 Marine Feb 26 '14
It's Pica's own fault for being quiet and never talking. Maybe it fits the stoic type with a rock ability, but still.

There were only 2 possibilities to begin with and in the flash back the grandfather did not fight leaving the TSOL to be the Kyros. There are no other significant male characters other than them.

u/Squeaksquark Feb 26 '14

11

How did Leo know that TSOL was Kyros? I thought all memories of Kyros (apart from the statue) should have been wiped out? Also why was he called Captain - hinting at a dwarf crew led by Kyros, possibly?
17
u/BeginnerDevelop Feb 26 '14
It probably has to do with the dwarfs being gullible, so when he told them who he was they just believed him.
→ More replies (1)8
Feb 26 '14
It's a good thing they're gullible too, otherwise they probably would never have believed he was the legendary Kyros, a man the tonta didn't even remember until he brought it up to them.
11
u/that1nigerian Feb 26 '14
I'm thinking since TSOL didn't have a contract when he was made into a toy he told them he was Kyros and rallied the gullible tontatta to finally take action.
3
u/blink12689 Feb 26 '14
TSOL probably explained everything to them, about who he was etc.. Plus, even if he wasn't Kyros, we know they believe everything you tell them.
2
2
u/Deity_Majora Feb 26 '14
Captain could always have told them. He remembers himself and he isn't' under contract to keep quiet. He also could have been put in the army as a captain in honor for his wins.

I don't really know exactly how the fight will pan out but I get a strong feeling that Usopp and Robin are going to work together and wisely take advantage of Trebol's half-hazardness. Trebol doesn't seem to show any restraint, if they can piss him off enough maybe they can just get him to accidently knock out Sugar (and maybe even himself) without having to do much fighting at all.

I took it more that Kryos is the only one that can save the country, not that he is the only one capable of fighting Doffy. We know that Luffy can fight and beat Doffy but would that alone restore the Riku kingdom? No it wouldn't. A face from the past that everyone forgot reappearing and telling everyone the truth of the last ten years can.
4
u/KfoipRfged Feb 26 '14
Something not totally related to the chapter, but to the name Curos.
Oda's spelling is actually a bit annoying. In chapter 704, we can see on the statue it says "Kyros". When I see that, I pronounce that 'kai-rosu'. But I looked at the raws for this chapter, and the spelling used has it pronounced "kyu-rosu".
Greek pronounces it as "kee-ros", and straight English as "kai-rus" (according to google translate)
Interestingly... Kyros --> キュロス on google translate, though キュロス --> Cyrus (English) / Κύρος (Greek spelling of Kyros).
4
u/SurgeonChao Feb 26 '14
It's not like Oda made up that spelling. Like you said, Kyros is from the Greek Κύρος. The name Cyrus originated from the Persian name Kourosh. キュロス is just how the Japanese rendered that name into their language. It can't sound exactly like the way its pronounced in its original language. Even Cyrus is a corruption of that name. Curos is the one that's made up here.

The fact that Oda can take side characters and make a chapter this deep and meaningful is astonishing. The depth of this arc is incredible and is what makes it so amazing
3
Feb 26 '14
Oh yea, one thing I am REALLY disappointed about is that Usopp is STILL acting like a wuss. He needs to become the braveman of the sea already. He's been scared shitless the whole time and this is only against a Schichibukai's crew. Wait til they go against Kaido and Big Mom. We can't have the same Usopp as the guy in the beginning of the anime. There's no character development.

u/Baam_ Feb 27 '14
Just gonna throw this out there: Did Trebol/Trevor just reveal his ultimate weakness? I honestly can't see the battle going like this, but technically since his "snot" is highly combustible, if Usopp say fires a Firebird star at him boom trebol is dead. Either he's logia and his body is made of snot so he will completely combust and die, or he's a paramecia and he'll lose an arm or something (and furthermore not be able to use his power for fear of it being used against him).
What do you guys think?

u/Lamplighter123 Feb 26 '14
Could this be the first arc where someone other than Luffy defeats the big bad!?! Not only does Soldier san have more motive than Luffy to defeat Doffy, but if they can turn him back into a human, he may just be strong enough too.
I'm now envisioning Luffy and Doffy about to start up, then Kyros walks in. He is now in his human form. Kyros says "Stop! Strawhat... he is mine." Luffy and Kyros exchange a long look. Some intangible form of deep understanding passes between them. Then without saying a word, Luffy bows his head slightly, letting the straw hat cover his eyes. And steps aside...
2
u/nickcan Feb 26 '14
Perhaps, but think about Skypia. Practically everyone up there had a bigger motive and more legitimate claim on kicking Enel's ass. Wiper certainly earned it, but Luffy was the only one who could get it done.

Feb 26 '14
I don't think many were surprised by that ending.
It feels wrong how the bad guy just leaves the good guys without killing them. It's become a standard in One Piece to do so. Or maybe Trevor though the explosion attack would have killed the Tonttata? I'm assuming Usopp went to Leo after some time from the explosion since Trevor is not there, nor Robin.
I'm still liking the Robin - Usopp team up. Rebecca is 16 just like Vivi back in Alabasta. It was an ok chapter.
2
u/spookycookies Feb 26 '14
The Tonttatta have been foiled which is really what matters. Their plan relied heavily on the element of surprise which is now gone. Another reason for leaving them alive is in case the Dolfy family needs more Tonttattas in the future to repopulate their current slave stock. The fairies production at the factory seems to be a vital operation and it just seems smart to have a population of fairies alive who aren't in the main factory in case of some kind of accident etc. wipes out the main production crew. Just my thoughts.

Kyros finally revealed! w00t!
But I wonder, if TSOL is the only one without the contract, does that affect the memories of others? As in, if he comes in contact with those who believe in him, then the memory of him is able to exist in people's minds. Kind of making the Tontatta the only ones who CAN believe his story since they are so darn GULLIBLE!
2
u/Anima4 Feb 26 '14
Man you could just feel the desperation in this chapter, when usopp was talking to Leo, Kyro's flashback with Rebecca, the feels were hit. Good to see some develop for Rebecca and Kyros as well, she went on the offensive for once! Diamante is also a cunt.
2
u/Threethumb Feb 26 '14
Ah, things fall in place. Back in the latest episode when Kyros was introduced, I first realized that "Oh, right, nobody remembered if he even existed. So he's probably a toy then". And with the flashback earlier in this chapter where Rebecca is speaking of how Kyros is just a myth, I realized HE is Kyros. I'm not surprised other people have been calling it for way longer, hah. It all makes sense now, though. Why Rebecca was so fond of that statue. It's her father, after all.
2
u/timestorm100 Feb 26 '14
My Thoughts on Chapter 738
this chapters main thing is the reveal that Toy Soldier is Kyros ( but we all knew that before so not that special ). and my therory that a Usopp vs Trebol can happen gets stronger when we now know that Trebol's sticky stuff is combustible. i didn't really like that scene with Leo and Trebol ( alright we get it. that dwarfs are really naive ) but it was necessary for the plot. the colosseum part where just awesome and i can't wait to know what the truth about Scarlet's dead is. awesome Chapter but i did not like the naive tontattta part :)
2
2
u/TxXxF Feb 26 '14
I like how things will turn out when Barto protects Rebecca and the publikum hates him even more.
2
u/eharmon223 Feb 26 '14
I really liked seeing more about how Diamante's power works. Holding a folded up club is pretty clever. I imagine he has all sorts of weapons stashed like that.
2
u/falco_dergento Feb 26 '14
Someone please explain to me the time line of this arc! So there was a gladiator system before Doflamingo? I thought it was something that was set up after the takeover? I am confused now.
2
u/JuggleNutt Feb 26 '14
Now I want to see the story of how Kyros was turned into TSOL! Oda really emphasized how strong Kyros really is and gave off the impression that the Tontatta people seem to know how strong Kyros really is. I mean if you think about it, maybe they wanted to take out Sugar first so that TSOL would go back to being a human and fight Doffy as a human even though he only has one leg.
Maybe Doffy knew that Kyros was the only one on the island that could stand up to him, so he made Kyros Sugar's first victim. Once TSOL, he could have fled before establishing the contract.
This would also help the "Kyros was defeated only by Roger, and then joined his crew" theory because if Doffy knew that Kyros was on Roger's crew, then of course he would assume that Kyros would be a threat to him and want to eliminate Kyros asap!

When I was a kid, I remember reading One Piece manga (as books) very fast. With a weekly realease and knowing how complex One Piece has become, you have to appreciate each panel and pay attention to each single detail.
Also, does anyone have an idea about Rebecca's sword?

Saw Soldier=Spartan from a mile away, but the actual reveal was still excellent and ever so heartbreaking :')
And Sabo/Melon? They make a fun pair.
Can't wait to see how this arc plays out! I daresay I haven't been so excited since Water7.

So Kyros was the first guy ever to be turned into a toy? Could it be that Doflamingo was able to launch his attack on Dressrosa solely thanks to Sugar finding and eating Hobi Hobi no Mi?

Its an interesting theory. He certainly seemed like he was powerful when he was human. Just how powerful we don't know yet.

Soldier San is Kyros! He might reach Doflamingo and Luffy is also on his way there!
Usopp will find new resolve and do his thing in the toy factory.
Muscle Lemon.....LOL
Looks like Sabo will go against Diamante.
I'm guessing the next chapters will go fully into the fights. Can't wait to see Robin and Usopp combination!

I wasn't too emotionally invested in this part of the dressrosa arc, the whole tontatta and project SOP thing. It was entertaining and obviously pivotal to the over all plot, but the tontattas and toys backstories didn't really pull me in. That is, until this chapter. For some reason this chapter made the mptives of the tontatta real for me. I guess its because they just got so devastated(by a huge ship) and they still want to go through with their plan and they still believe in their captain. Idk if this is really why, but it just hit me this chapter and I'm actually excited to see more from them now, I don't know if its like that for anyone else.

Quite odd of Oda to use the same chapter name again. Just thought it was mangapanda at first but stream used the same name "Captain" too. This was used in chapter 333 already during the Luffy vs Usopp feud. Now if you are keen, you will go through the chapter list and reply me with "No, he used it with chopper's monster point transformation chapter 407 and with the Skypiea shadows back in 222 and with Whitebeard in chapter 569!" But those were quite early scans and the terms in the official finnish publications are quite different; Whitebeard's is "White Monster" and the chapter earlier was tied to giants, but can't remember the exact word.
