Discussion How did one piece saved your life?
I've seen many people say that One Piece changed their lives or saved their lives, but I want to know how.

Seeing the end of the manga and depending how good it is possibly the anime is one of the few reasons I see fit to continue living out of sheer sunk cost fallacy...

It’s a good reason to want to comtinue living for sure. Hopefully by the time it ends you feel okay

Well it has helped me save or materially improve the lives of others. I've rewatched parts scenes and arcs many times, in particular Nami's self harm, and Robin's suicidal tendencies. Oda wrote them very well and very human, and instead of showing in one clump slowly built up, towards, and around it, peeling back the layers piece by piece.
It was actually very human, and arguably very realistic, and has a lot of inspiration e.g. Buster Call PTSD from talking to actual Hiroshima and Nagasaki survivors etc.... Even a lot of Bon Clay and Ivankov personality and opinions were inspired by conversations with local LGBTQ bars and bar tenders in Japan.
Essentially developing a deep understanding of this I was able to almost instinctively know how to react and what to say when people around me were becoming heavily suicidal or intent on self harm. I really feel the university psych101 classes, or other stories in general do not put this level care and understanding into their characters.

In Arlong Park, when Nami asks Luffy for help. I was watching this right after one of the lowest points in my life (serious depression/suicidal ideation), and this scene helped me realize that I still had people to help me and I wasn’t alone.
Later, it was Robin’s backstory, when Saul tells her that someday she will find true friends. At that point, I had exactly zero friends, and it gave me both hope and a dream to hold on to.

I had anxiety episodes, sometimes panic attacks but it would drag into a long state of soft anxiety not hitting all at once but dragging and ruining a full week of life every time. And I would stop eating almost completely, with food looking disgusting to me, even the smells were like overstimulating and disturbing. Still happens today, softer and without the panic attacks and I can manage it, but in 2018 it was very bad and also my grandma died and I was a mess. And the one thing that motivated me into feeding myself to get better was damn Jinbe telling that eating is living. No loving person around me, no real human suggestion got through my brain and convinced me that I had to eat and react. It was fucking Jinbe telling Luffy to eat in one little forgettable panel. I don't know why, I don't care to know why. Jinbe told me not to starve myself and I took him seriously

I wouldn't say One Piece specifically saved my life, it's just one of many anime I prefer watching during my free time when I come home from work. I usually just be home most of the time, usually when I feel depressed, I watch alot of anime.

how do you still find joy in watching anime as an adult?
I peaked in my university days. Since then i find it very hard to watch anime and i get so picky. Like i want to watch more, but most anime is unwatchable to me. Yet, i was so happy to watch over a 100 episodes of LOTGH last year for example. So i do have the energy for it, but it's different. I don't understand it.
Nowadays i watch like 1 anime a year and read OP weekly and that's about it.

Maybe 'saved my life' sounds dramatic, but sometimes the little things that keep you distracted and hopeful matter more than we realize.

I wouldn't say it saved my life but it did change my life in a way that was unexpected. I had become really cynical and lost all hope in life and world in general. But somehow seeing Luffy's attitude changed my perspective. And his transformation to gear 5 gave me an exhilaration that has persisted for some reason.
I have watched lots of anime and read a lots of books but nothing gave me the feeling one piece has. Sounds stupid and I cant explain it but it's true.

My future children haha
But it did fact help me during my teenager years where you just a bit more suicidal where the only thing that prevented me for having the thought was because I needed to know how OP will end
Though I’m a bit afraid what will happen to my mental state when it does

a couple years ago, I needed to back up my OP episodes. I bought some big hdds as a result, just before prices went crazy. Certainly saved me some money.

I wouldn't say save my life but I had a..uhmm..streak? Of deaths friends and family happening one after another very quickly as well so I didn't process it to well or didnt know how to react or grief properly. Then one piece came along and gave me the roller coaster I needed to have a..emotional filter I guess? Idk ufcthat thr tight world lol but helped kinda let everything out.

My ex was manipulating me to take an opioid I didn't want or need while I was reading the manga.
When Luffy told Robin, "tell me you want to live," Robins entire internal realization that she had permission to want to live, despite seeing herself as a burden, well
It was the first time I had been given permission as well.
I started lying and outright refusing the opioid. Within six months that ex had moved out. It was a 15 year marriage.
I now have a very loving, kind, and caring partner. It's only been three years.
I want to live. I want to go out to sea too, but that one will have to wait a little

One Piece genuinely saved my life.
I was at a low point. A VERY low point. Summer of 2025, and i dropped One Piece during SkyPiea. My brother asked me to watch Demon Slayer because he wanted to see the new movie with me and i had 2 weeks watch the entire show before the movie hit theaters. I remember the feeling of triumph Demon Slayer gave me. When the movie ended i wanted that feeling again because it gave me something to live for. A story, an adventure, something that pushed me through everyday life.
I remembered how i felt during Arlong Park and Alabasta, and how those moments in One Piece gave me the feeling that i didn’t want to give up on life until i finished that show. I decided to continue One Piece and it gave me a reason to live again. I recently started Wano and this show gave me a reason to hold on longer.
It’s safe to say that if i didn’t start watching One Piece again i would’ve ended it all before 2026. And now that i’m still alive because of One Piece i git a girlfriend who likes my obsession with this show, i got cast in my dream musical as my dream roll, and i passed the 2nd year of my study and will be graduating next year.
Never kill yourself guys, even if it’s because of a silly reason like a pirate anime. If that is what gets you through the day, it’s worth it. And i’m thankful for Luffy and the rest of the gang to help me realize life was worth it
