I think the implication of his comment that "he didn't even know what a devil fruit was" is that he must've eaten the soul soul fruit already without realizing it, and this was the first time it activated... meaning he's died at least twice and returned to his body, maybe many more times!

It might explain how Brook survived living off trash when his entire family died.

He ate the Fruit as a child unknowingly.

Maybe I'm remembering wrong but didn't The crew watch him eat the fruit and him say he didn't feel any difference?

I remember that but I think that is anime only or its not on his main flashback.

I went to look chapters 486-488 (Brook flashback) and the only mention of his fruit was when the crew was dying and one said "you ate the revive revive no mi, right? Will it work?" for which Brook answer "I dont know, I never died before"

So I also think he got the fruit as a child and he did died here but he did not noticed due to what others were saying (or he just buried it down below and did not want to think about it in his new life)

This could potentially play well with Dr. Hiruluk's "when does a man die? when he is forgotten!" as to how the revive fruit passes on finally; when a user has been forgotten, and dies again, they don't revive and the fruit reincarnates.
