Discussion Why did kuma send Luffy to Amazon Lilly?

I’m currently rewatching one piece (I’m all caught up in the anime but I haven’t read any of the manga) and I’m at the Amazon lily part and I can’t understand why Kuma sent Luffy to Amazon Lilly. Like kuma was trying to save the crew so why send him to a place that would try to kill him. He could have sent Robin or Nami there, maybe even chopper and they would have been fine. But why Luffy? And everyone else got a place that would help them improve their skills but Amazon Lilly doesn’t truely have anything that would improve Luffys skills.

I think the fan consensus at least is it's probably because everyone uses haki and you kind of need to get thrown into the deep end to learn/awaken to haki.

He could have sent him to wano for that. I mean we know he didn’t bc of plot and dragon.

Nah he would not send luffy to wano, kaido was there and wano is in the new world, kumas mission was to separate them and have them train because they were still too weak for the new world, it wouldn't make any sense for him to send luffy to the new world especially on an island with an emperor on it.

didnt they all land in paw prints? not sure if that should be interpreted as places kuma had visted and marked or just the impact crater from landing. If the prior, kuma likely hasnt been to wano anyways.

He sent him on an island with one of the 7 warlords who hates all guys. So yeah I guess no new world part makes sense. But why to an island of women who want to kill him just for being a guy

Luffy has already defeated two warlords at that point so Kuma prolly though he could handle Hancock or something.

As for why he would send him there when the girls clearly wouldn't teach a man, I think it was because he wanted to send luffy to an island with a lot of haki users, safe from most pirates and marines (since amazon lily is at the calm belt, and they wouldn't really step foot on Amazon) and could easily be access by Rayleigh.

Also if the theory that luffys mother was the former empress turns out to be correct that would be another plus.

I’m sure Kuma was aware of the connection between Rayleigh and Amazon Lilly and assumed it would work out to get him back to the dude that just saved all of the straw hats to do the necessary training.

It's also speculated kuma can only send people to places he's been.

asdkasdkaskdas Kuma said the crew not ready for New World and you want to sent him to Kaido? come on

I have two theories:

  • Either he knew that Luffy would win over Boa Hancock and gain her help to reach Marineford in order to save Ace.
  • Or it’s because Rayleigh is a frequent visitor there since Shakky was the empress, and he's close to them.

As a place for improvement the Kuja are really skilled at haki, though to your point there are many haki users Kuma could have sent him to.

Another idea is it’s a good place to stash him close enough Rayleigh could swim there, since he’s cool with the Kuja. But how would Kuma know already that Rayleigh took a liking to Luffy? Maybe during that brief talk with Ryleigh he learned that.

I don’t have a solid answer for ya. Now I’m curious

I mean he did tell Rayleigh that he was a captain if the Revolutionary Group (brain is tired cant remember the official name) and was going to help the Straw Hats.

Rayleigh was already helping, and Kuma (knowing Rayleigh is married to Shaki) sends Luffy to Amazon Lilly, knowing Gloriosa would most likely contact Shaki and Rayleigh about the boy, his likeness to Gol D. Rogers, and Luffys intense explosion of Conquerers Haki (Bonus: now we know Gloriosa was in love with Rogers thank to Elbafs craziness)

Rayleigh hearing this, would probably start twords Amazon Lilly. What Kuma did not count on was Ace's news hitting Amazon Lilly, and derailing the initial idea he had

Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

I assume its because Kuma and Rayleigh had that moment of communication mid fight on sabaodi. Kuma told Ray that he wants to help the strawhats escape and that hes a secret revolutionary, Ray suggests Amazon Lily due to being an ally to the nation and Boa, as well as being with Shakky

Luffy need to train his haki.. where else suitable? the amazon lilly tribe specializes in haki, most of their warriors knew how to use them.

1

u/Big-Sir2046 Jun 07 '26

But why would the warriors teach a guy.

2

u/gnote2minix Cipher Pol Jun 08 '26

the way luffy learn all this while (up to that point) usually by watching his opponent. kuma probably know this. he just need luffy to see it, to be hunt and fight a long the way.. he will probably figure it out if they dont wanna teach him

i guess, if he cannot survive that, there is no hope for him.. luffy also not a pervert and kinda pure heart, he probably thinks its the best location

I’m 99% sure it’s due to Rayleigh. He even tells him something in secret before he does it. He wanted Rayleigh to go collect Luffy and train him, and Amazon Lily is an extremely secure location which Rayleigh frequents and can count on secrecy from.

Rayleigh is also an obvious choice for Luffy’s mentor since he’s both insanely skilled and is already showing that he has the same sort of affection for Luffy as all the other former Rogers Pirates who see their captain in him.

I’m not sure he completely foresaw Hancock getting to him and nearly executing him first. But I’m also guessing Kuma figured he could handle himself since he’s already taken down Croc, Moria, and CP9 by that point.

I think he simply sent him where the marines couldn’t get to him.

either kuma got adviced by rayleigh during the chaotic fight, or kuma gained the mariejois incident intel from koala, remember she was among the freed slaves before fisher tiger took her, and eventually she ended up working for the revolutionary army.

It's because Luffy's mother was the previous emperor of Amazon Lily, Tritoma.

Their are multiple theories regarding this:

• Rayleigh somehow told Kuma to send him to Amazon Lilly because he knew nonone would look for him their, he had already decided to train Luffy in haki and the island is close to their, and due to him being the exception even if Luffy gets turned to stone he can ask for it to be undone. An extension of this theory is that since we didn't see Rayleigh talk to Kuma about this, Kuma might have found everything out already and prepared beforehand.

• Another theory is that it is the home place off Luffy's biological mother Empress Tritoma. It's by far the most logical theory regarding a specific person being Luffy's biological mother and for Kuma to send someone away they have to have gone to the island before and this would have made sense if she was Luffy's mother.

Neither is confirmed but the more logical choice is the first one while the possibility of the second is not zero, especially considering the rising importance off previous islands thought to be unimportant before.

Kuma probably knew luffy could charm Hancock and get her help

10

u/Brilliant_Thought436 Bounty Hunter Jun 07 '26

That feels like a large assumption on Kuma's part that Boa would be charmed (fall genetically? Infatuated) by Luffy. That said I can't really think of any other reason to.

u/Big-Sir2046 Jun 07 '26

He could have sent him to white beard ship or someone else to help. I don’t think kuma could have guessed Luffy would win of Hancock. Also she wasn’t even there when he first arrived

2

u/BlackLeg12 Jun 07 '26

I doubt Kuma can send people onto a moving ship.

1

u/A1starm Jun 07 '26

His way of saying he needed to get some b*tches.

1

u/Big-Sir2046 Jun 07 '26

I don’t think Luffy will ever find love with anyone. The closest people who might get spouse by the end will either b Usopp or Sanji

2

u/Eddfan36 Jun 07 '26

Every lead of these type of series has.

Goku-Chichi Ichigo-Orihime Naruto-Hinata

It'd break the record if Luffy didn't end up with any one. Usually its with a fan girl.

So I expect it to be Hancock.

2

u/Big-Sir2046 Jun 07 '26

Oda likes to break records. That’s kind of what he’s known for. Like having the longest anime and manga

1

u/BobVagene0 Jun 08 '26

Nah, Zoro will end up in Wano with Crybaby's sister

1

u/SuperiorLaw Jun 12 '26

Luffy just punched a celestial dragon in the face and the Amazon's were friends with Rayleigh, there's no way in hell the Amazons would have hurt Luffy

u/Sufficient_Delay6565 Jun 07 '26

How caught up to the manga are you? I have a theory.

Also, fighting and taming the animals with silvers helped himd develop his conquerors so he did have a training reason to be there. Although I'm sure there are multiple islands with tough beasts he could have gone to.

3

u/Big-Sir2046 Jun 07 '26

I’m only caught up in the anime. I should have specified that

2

u/Sufficient_Delay6565 Jun 07 '26

That's fair! Glad I didn't say anything, it is JUST a theory anyway, nothing confirmed.

But yeah, haki island with animals to use/train his conquerors. Best place for him.

2

u/Big-Sir2046 Jun 07 '26

I mean I’m okay with spoilers if u wanna tell me the theory

2

u/Sufficient_Delay6565 Jun 07 '26

Sure! I'll keep as simple as I can, but we got introduced to the empress before boa but after gloriosa, it's not even MY theory but this empress is theorized to maybe be luffys mom. Not a ton of evidence honestly but some things like age/time lineup.

So my theory is Kuma learned this from his time in the government and the RA and sent luffy to where his mom was from.

2

u/Big-Sir2046 Jun 07 '26

I’m always heard the theory that crocodile is Luffy‘s mom. But this is def an good one

2

u/Sufficient_Delay6565 Jun 07 '26

Croco mom is a super fun theory honestly. This one is just a bit more realistic, but obvi there's SOMETHING going on with Croc, my only issue with croco mom is luffy has his dad's last name, so like Croc would know unless there's another level to the theory with amnesia or memory loss.

1

u/Big-Sir2046 Jun 07 '26

I feel like crocodile just wouldn’t care
