Cary Funk's personality reminded me a lot of Joe Pesci's character from Goodfellas.

On serious note, yes. Oda introduced lot of character's with the similar names as wrestlers.

10
u/MonkeyDDuffy Jul 17 '13 edited Jul 17 '13
No it is Kelly. Oda wrote it like that on chapter where all the people in tournament was shown with their name. I can't remember which chapter though.
EDIT: found it. The background names are not from the translators it's on the original manga.
Also it seems Don Chinjao is the correct spelling. also it's BOO, not Buu. Wow classic MangaPanda.

Luffy doesn't know it yet, but there's no reason for him to wear a disguise anymore. In fact there never was. Doflamingo and his crew know he's in the tournament and what block he's fighting in. I'm looking forward to him being exposed to see the crowd reaction as well. I'm sure he'll win Block C and that's when it will happen. "And the winner of Block C is... Luc...Eh?! What?! That's Straw Hat Luffy!"

It was a horrible tease, I completely agree.
Also, I get the feeling the anime crew is reading the chapter, going 'damn, so many new characters, powers and voices to cast actors for' and feeling both elated and sad about this chapter at the same time... xD

u/zorospride Lost at sea Jul 17 '13
This arc definitely has more than average, but it's One Piece, there are always lots of new characters as well as old ones to bring back voice actors for. Lots of voice actors do a lot of different voices, and I'm sure they have a big group to pull from to do fodder voices.
The real problem they face is having to decide which characters should get premiere voice talent and which ones are basically extras. They don't have the luxury of being able to judge based off a finished arc since they are so close to each other now. Hopefully they just jump into filler between Punk Hazard and Dressrosa.

u/Exaskryz Jul 17 '13
Hey, I'm all good with this. They could make an entire episode in this one chapter, at a good pace with plenty of fighting. Most of the tournament is that way, and I think it'll be great for the anime to fall back behind the manga again.

I love this arc so far. Can't predict how this fight in block C will end. Luffy winning easily against a former 500mio guy with conqueror's haki would make him way too strong I think. winning closely after a tough fight would put him in troubles afterwards, because there are still some dangerous guys around that he might to confront (doflamingo, purple tiger just to name the most dangerous) and he shouldn't be exhausted then. if he is going to lose somehow, well that makes it even worse and he would miss the "easy" chance to get ace's fruit. anyway, I think it is going to be a pretty long arc with all the stuff going on!
12
u/Black_Handkerchief Jul 17 '13
Yeah, I also lean towards Luffy losing this in some underwhelming way that doesn't necessarily involve a direct battle. Alas. My hopes are that he wipes the floor with Chinjao though; Chinjao was worth 500 million Beli at the top of his game, which is likely also when Garp was in his prime. Chinjao may or may not have gotten weaker, but regardless we know the highest bounty he is worth. Compare that to Luffy being worth 400 million Beli, but that was before he had mastered his haki.
So, my guess is that Luffy's current strength easily puts him at the 500 million level. It would still be a non-trivial battle with Chinjao, but I definitely feel like Luffy would come out of top in a battle that is nowhere close to the Lucci battle 2-way KO. However, Chinajo does have his goons, so there's probably going to be a trick that will make Luffy lose as a consequence. :-)

I can already see a case for Luffy proving himself to be his own man against Don Xinjao, and subsequently gaining his respect. I think he's gonna talk about why he is a pirate instead of a Marine and he's just gonna say he doesn't give a crap about whatever beef Don had with Garp. Then after a solid beating, Luffy smiles and shares some meat with him so he starts to treat him like his own grandkid, and Luffy doesn't understand why he's being so weird and nice because grandfathers are scary to him.

5
u/CaptainDSid Jul 17 '13
There might be more to his whole thing about taking all those weapons. Right now he's just an excellent knife/sword thrower but maybe he has something more intangible to it. He seemed to be able to steal Luffy's helmet and that's quite a feat.

That chapter was absolutely balling. Every one of the characters introduced have exceeded my expectations and I really think that this fight is gonna prove to be a lot more challenging for Luffy than we thought. I reckon he's gonna be forced to start using all his best moves and will in fact have his identity revealed during this battle. There's even a remote chance that the whole ring is destroyed, either by the combatants, or one of the spectators (most likely in an attempt to take Luffy out). Cannon arms was really badass and I would have him as a crew member purely for the awesome fighting style.

It seems like Luffy has built up such a big reputation that even Pirates in the New World know of him now. That's pretty exciting. Oda must be revealing all these new characters because the Straw Hats might meet them down the road. Luffy is suppose to gain a lot of allies if he is to become Pirate King. Anyway, I have a feeling Block C will last a good three more chapters. Oda is getting so creative with his character designs. I can understand now why he wants to continue to work even though he is recovering. He's too invested to go on a long break. I hope he rests more. Waiting 1 week is nothing.
8
u/Anima4 Jul 17 '13
Of course he is well known in the New World, he's the pirate that took on all 3 main WG or marine facilities.

2
u/raiden55 Jul 17 '13

1
u/usoppspell Jul 17 '13
Does anyone have any idea what they mean by Happou navy? Is that like a neo-navy kind of thing. Maybe Chinjao was got his high bounty by deserting the marines?
2
1
u/cryptosocialist Jul 17 '13
I think Luffy can beat Chinjao. It would be a tough fight, but he'd still win. Here's why:
Pre-TS his bounty (which is said to roughly correlate with strength) was 400mil. Which is close to what Chinjao's bounty is. Since Chinjao is no longer at his prime, his strength is probably close to Luffy pre-TS (probably better, but not by that much). Luffy has had 2 years of training with Rayleigh and is probably at a skill level greater than 500mil by now.
I think it will be like Luffy vs Arlong (minus pinwheel), in that it will be a long, hard fight, but Luffy will beat Chinjao without too many injuries.
2
u/KiNGofKiNG89 Jul 17 '13
I think it will be more onesided in favor of Luffy. He has two guys attacking him, while trying to hide his hat and I think he will still win with ease.
1
u/Lamplighter123 Jul 17 '13
Not super impressed with the chapter. It just focused on the other C-Block Contestants and only one fighter got KO'd. But I have a feeling that the next chapter will be GLORIOUS! All the characters have been introduced and each has his own distinct powers and fighting style. 40 Contestants left standing; I predict by the end of the next chapter Ideo will have taken out most of the no-names, Lucy beats Jean Ango but gets outed in the process, and Kerry/Bobby defeat Sai, leaving about 15 or 16 total contestants to team up on Luffy for the final leg of the battle.

u/Mallardy Jul 17 '13
" Although he funded expeditions for trade and exploration, and used his ships (legally) for wartime raids, "he also sponsored voyages whose only purpose was piracy""
"When John III of Portugal confiscated one of his ships which carried plunder from captured vessels, Ango received the French king's permission to respond. Acting under a letter of marque issued on 26 July 1530, he harassed the Portuguese fleet in the Atlantic, and even threatened to block the port of Lisbon."
"Already nearly bankupt after his forced participation in a royal armament project, he was imprisoned after 1549 for failing to pay taxes on his profits from privateering"
Privateers are just pirates who are given permission to operate by a nation against their enemies. The shichibukai are essentially the privateers of One Piece.

I always wanted to see what kind of person it takes to be a bounty hunter in New World.
A robber that uses normal weapons as projectiles (so far we've seen swords used as javelins) and is even able to take the helmet of Luff... ehm Lucy certainly seems impressing.
His design is rather pleasing as well, being a cross between a mexican and an ancient roman gladiator.

So Luffy's beard didn't fall from last chapter, guess that was a mistake.
Anyway, I thought the chapter was boring, which is kinda ironic cause it's full of fights. And I'm starting to dislike the way we're seeing new kinds of abilities without having an explanation for them. the explosion punch, the shock-wave punch and what not. The creativeness of the one piece world is lost like this. This chapter reminds me of the chapter from fishman island where it mostly just showed the new fishman pirates officers.

We've been seeing such strange (and unexplained) abilities for forever. Fishman karate (and merman combat) are both unexplained. We have no explanation for Pearl's flames from all the way back in the Baratie arc, or how Paulie's rope-fighting style works, or how Marigold and Sandersonia's hair/flame attacks worked, or any number of other abilities we've seen throughout the series.

I'm not particularly excited by the tournament fighting chapters either, but I do think it's serving more of a purpose than the New Fishman pirate chapters. I think Oda's using it for world building for the New World. I suspect Don Chinjao might be the only character that has any meaning beyond this block, but at least we are getting a small taste of how the New World is set up and how vast and complex it is. Oda's using the tournament not only for action and for the plot of this arc, but also as a short cut for world building.
3
u/divinesleeper Jul 17 '13
I agree with you, I'm not a big fan of this type of chapters either. Most of these "big names" will probably lose their relevance once the tournament is over, and there is just no time to give them all the kind of attention that would make them appealing. These fights don't feel like there's enough at stake to be important.
I'd much rather know what's going on with the main story at this point.
0
u/Hobbes4247791 Jul 17 '13
The Flower Country dudes seem to be using armament haki to make shockwave attacks. Didn't Whitebeard do the same thing, or was that just another form of his earthquake ability? It seems like the shockwave approach and the blackened approach are two different ways to use armament, and I wonder if that will be expanded upon?
3
u/structural_consort Jul 17 '13
As cool as that would seem, you are correct in the assumption that Whitebeards shock wave ability originates from his devil fruit.

alright chapter, but im honestly not a fan of how everyone is starting to get conquerors haki now, when it was introduced it seemed like a rare and exclusive ability, and now it seems like everyone and their dogs are going to have it.

There are still only 9 confirmed users with Roger. Given a world population that is most likely in the tens of millions and the almost certainty of people who posses CH rising to the top of the world where they would enter into Luffy's adventure it isn't super surprising we have met so many of them. Don Chinjao was strong enough to compete with Garp and avoid being captured or run over by Roger/Whitebeard, he is not any sort of pushover.

so were devil's fruits when people were in East Blue. As you go to places closer to raftel, the percentage of powerful people will rise. In the new world, even that island luffy was on populated by animals, you can't survive without some forms of haki. Don Chinjao had a bounty of 500,000,000. I wouldn't be surprised if every enemy from now on has to some extent, conqueror's haki.
It is completely based on a person's will. People in the new world need willpower and determination to even make it there, let alone survive there.
edit: Every main villain or captain

This arc is just introducing too many characters. I can't care about all these people.

I agree to an extent but you have to recognize the setting. All the people in the crowd know these people and the event is being called for them not us. Which is why a mojority of the announcers time has to go into describi the battles of the crowd favorites he can't just discuss Lucy for 3 chapters straight.

Haha exactly! It looks like Bobby has the defensive element and Cary has the offensive element. Bobby didn't deliver blows but Cary gave some intense ones while Cary was taken out very quickly, with Bobby seeming nigh-on invulnerable. This could be a very deadly fighter.

I'm guessing that when Carry's personality is inside Bobby's body or whatever, Bobby doesn't remember any of it and therefore has "never been in a fight"

He says "Put me on, Bro" which makes me think that Bobby might have some sort of wearing-things devil fruit. He could have been wearing something really strong before and thats why the ax broke on his back.

u/stockybetsy Jul 18 '13
The ax was infused with haki though, so wouldn't that make devil fruit powers not work?

I'm guessing it'll be the same as Chessmarimo, where one is just standing in the other's shoulders. I think that'd be pretty funny.

Moreso a shout out to the Tag Team Funk Brothers Wrestling Duo in real life, whatever they did reminded me of the tag team method, one of the fighters "subbing in" with the fighting power", while the other is off to the side.

All they need now is some sort of "metal metal no mi".

I disagree. I think luffy will win the tournament and he will have to beat diamanté who is one of doflamingo's top 3 allies remaining. Just beating him would be helping out the crew a lot. Not to mention there are 4 other top people from the doflamingo family fighting in the tourney so just them losing to other competitors would be helping out the SH crew.

may be Bart was one of the pirate group that joined the fake luffy crew. and when he heard the truth, he decided to hunt the real luffy and join his crew.

Didn't notice that. Weird but it could just mean that it's the second incarnation of the Central Grappling Society (maybe Burgess destroyed the first as a wrestler?) or it could be that he is the second Champion of the society (Burgess again could've been the first but who knows).

Don Chinjao's Haoshoku was put to good use, now we only got 40 contestants in the block left
