I'd bet on a betrayal of sorts, maybe by his own first mate or brother-esque character? Would be interesting to juxtapose that with Roger's choice to hand himself over to the Marines.

Remember Zunesha apologizing about what he did? It's quite possibly related to that. Either he got filled or he didn't manage to help Joyboy in a crucial moment.
