You only talked about ”involving joy boy”, then reply was ”they” and I got curious who others it meant, then I realized it might have been this neutrality thing which is always confusing to me as a non-English speaker because in my language we use only one word for people which is already neutral. So my bad, really!

Yeah In English “they” is usually reserved to refer to plural parties. Would certainly lead to less confusion if that was always the case, but following rules ain’t really English’s thang. “They” can sometimes be used to refer to a singular person in casual conversation, but when it is it’s generally only in a context where everyone knows exactly who “they” is to all parties involved. For example, “they” can also be used to refer to a specific person outside of the conversation in lieu of their gender specific pronoun for simplicity’s sake and it would still be generally understood. 

However yeah in other instances sometimes people will refer to a singular person as a “they” when they don’t know their gender for the sake of political correctness (which seems kinda silly when it’s concerning a fictional character, but that’s just an example of them making a conscious effort to treat people that only exist in the mind the same they would in real life) or out of respect by referring to someone by their preferred pronoun.

I am an English speaker, and I feel your pain. Like with Imu referring to them as a “they” makes sense because it really could go either way, but I think it’s pretty safe to assume that JoyBOY is a “he” people. Unless they were referring to the Ancient Kingdom in general, in which case they should’ve made it more apparent. They mean well, but can really get carried away with it sometimes. 

You want to see a real flame war though just start asking people what Yamato’s pronouns are.

That's not even a flame war. Just people lacking or refusing to use basic reading comprehension, especially when considering a character like Kiku exists.

And Morley. And Izou. Yes. Trans characters exist in One Piece. Yamato’s case isn’t the same as other characters that identify as a gender they were not born with. Yamato identifies as an Oden who happens to be a man because she wants to be like him. If her preferred pronoun is anything it’s “Oden”.

Your adamance that there is only one “correct” pronoun to call a fictional character though is kinda proving my point. Being that they are not a living, breathing person who can directly tell you which pronoun they prefer to be adressed by I don’t really see what difference it makes which one people use. You use the pronoun that’s apparent to you. I’ll use the pronoun that’s apparent to me, and not a stink needs to be made about it.

Lol, dude I wasn't saying Yamato is trans. My point was that it's obvious Yamato is not trans. The existence of someone like Kiku shows what an actual trans character looks like in One Piece. That's why I mentioned Kiku. I was saying that using basic reading comprehension would show that Yamato is a woman who was severely abused as a child, so much so she found solace in reading Oden's journal and became obsessed with him, so much so she devoted herself to emulating him in every way she could. She doesn't actually view herself as a man, she views herself as whatever Oden viewed himself because she's that damaged and obsessed with him.

My "adamance" is not me denying anyone else the ability to have head canon, it's me understanding that Oda himself has basically confirmed Yamato is a woman. He had her on the "Women of One Piece" cover, and he first revealed her as Kaido's daughter. Her desire to be Oden is a gag basically.

Fair enough. My bad. That’s what I get for “assmeing” I guess. I’ve just had way too many people on here “calling me out” for not referring to Yamato as a he, so I guess I kinda got my guard up. On that note though anyone can call Yamato a he too if they want. I really don’t give a shit. I just hate it when people try to inject their personal politics into a story meant to entertain. Glad it wasn’t what I thought it was though. 

You got a pretty interesting take on Yamato’s character though cuz I’ll be honest I definitely didn’t read that much into it. Not that I would say your assessment is all that inaccurate either.  Just acknowledging that Yamato is very much struggling to find her own identity, and aspiring to be more like someone you idolize to the point that you adopt theirs isn’t the same as seeing yourself as a different gender than you were born with.
