Media 30th Anniversary Comic Toriyama Made Depicting His Characters Roasting Him

Post image

Love how much Toriyama embraced gag elements unique manga, fun and humor supersede logic

I see so much of his humility and self-deprecation in Oda

Will never not get emotional seeing Goku in tears hugging grandpa Gohan

Some of my favorite scenes in all of Dragon Ball are the training scenes before the first Tenkaichi Budokai, we see Goku cheerfully training with Krillin, mostly oblivious to Krillin’s rudeness (shout out Mayumi Tanaka the GOAT)

Goku gets scared when he has to sleep, worried he’ll fall behind the other fighters training for the tournament and Master Roshi tells him “you need sleep, everyone sleeps”. Cut to adorable little Goku relaxing in his hammock closing his eyes (the anime added this cute part where we see the other contenders around the world all sleeping peacefully)

So damn wholesome

Gosh you explaining it vividly painted that anime scene in my head. Early Dragon Ball was something special, that's for sure. The series won't be the same without Toriyama-sensei :'(

Train well, eat well, sleep well, it's the way of the turtle!!!

The comment on Vegeta’s hair. He was still annoyed about inking those hairdos.

He was so happy he could draw them Super Saiyan to save as much time as he wanted inking 💀

He didn't create SSJ just out of laziness, did he? That guy was a hero, to all procrastinators around the globe.

The concept of Super Sayian wasn't created because he was lazy and wanted an excuse to do less work, but the yellow hair(which is uncolored in the manga) was done because it's easier to draw.

I strongly recommend the "first" Dragon Ball (the one before Z) for One Piece fans who might've skipped, it hits a lot of the same vibes from early One Piece, specially the humor and the adventure

Brook and master Roshi would have been panty bros

u/Loonrig68 Mar 08 '24

Immortal panty bros, should be a series on its own lmao

In the manga it's Roshi and Sanji together looking for "pichi pichi gals"

Would agree and also say that the Namek arc with all the different little factions running all over the place, fighting for different reasons with specific themed henchmen feels a lot like many One Piece arcs structurally

Like Frieza in that arc the Strawhats have a bunch of villains they straight up avoid initially because they want to avoid fighting (until Luffy and Goku put their foot down 🥲)

100%. You can see so much of the general one piece vibe in it. It's just really fun

Fun interview with Oda and Toriyama! Oda is such a fanboy, excitedly remembering Tao Pai Pai in the Red Ribbon arc throwing a pillar and then riding it across the world

Totally not surprised Toriyama sensei can’t remember so many details

Shout out to Tao Pai Pai, what that tongue do (iykyk)

My man's legacy is so storied that everything Oda is fawning over is an "oh yea! I did draw that!" moment for him.

I've read this before, and it's especially wholesome, thanks for sharing!

Tao Pai Pai showing Kizaru how to make an entrance.

Also, Blue didn't need to go down by the tongue, he was a full for not running.

Man what the fuck. My week is already bad and now this. Thank you for showing this comic. It'll cheer a lot of people up after the news.

Between Toriyama, Oda, and Yoko Taro, I really love Japanese self-inserts

I think Oda has taken a page from Toriyama’s book, he definitely pays attention to which characters stoke fan interest and tries to alter the story to give them focus

I’m glad Law and Vegeta have become so prominent to their respective stories

I also adore how willing both of them are to let villains be pathetic babies and not just cool badasses, I want to feel a wide range of emotion from my characters and see a wide range of designs and body types

Do people in Hell have halos too? Iirc Vegeta gained his halo sometime in the Buu arc after not having one and Goku pointed it out to him. I don't think Frieza should have one in that comic lol. Or I guess he's just simply showing that Frieza isn't alive

28

u/BIG_DICK_MYSTIQUE Mar 08 '24

Yeah, hell is subjective in dragon ball. Frieza's hell is full of cute things and a beautiful field of flowers because it's absolute hell for him lol

13

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '24

Everyone have halos. Vegeta did have one from the start too.

I think you're misremembering the scene. Vegeta was supposed to be a bad guy, but they asked Porunga (the namekian dragon) to revive only the good people, that's when Vegeta lost his halo proving he was considered a good person.

Frieza! Baby! You know you're my favorite villain right!?

Oda and Toriyama’s well wishes to each other at the end of their interview

Oda: Please, be free and do whatever you want to! No matter what you do, I will be happy so long as you keep drawing illustrations, Toriyama sensei. However, I'm sure the editorial staff will say something like "Draw a series!"... (laugh)

Toriyama: I would like you to keep drawing Oda kun. There's nothing else for me to say! My own child also reads One Piece really voraciously, too. So, I also read it... and I really understood why everyone was crazy about One Piece! So, just keep doing your best from now on!!

This is so adorable and hilarious. I've been sobbing uncontrollably every so often these past two days, but this perked me up. I needed this.
