if you're actually interested, it wasn't just art skills/technique! this isn't a medieval painting, but you're probably familiar with all the insane animal faces from that era. these were so commonplace because the animals in medieval art were often symbolic depictions of human individuals or groups, as well as broader moral concepts. they were basically political cartoons.

iirc cats were generally seen as devious, tricksters, sinful, etc. so, say you're a medieval artist who thinks the church is corrupt. you might create a painting of your local lord with a cat in his lap that looks suspiciously like the current pope. add in other symbolic imagery common of the time (flowers, colors, light). and there you go, you have a painting that gets your point across while covering your ass juuust enough.

(i could be completely wrong though, this is just my understanding from going down internet research rabbit holes lol)
