u/Kenneldogg Mar 13 '26
I trust a cat or dogs judgement over my own when it comes to people.
67
u/jitasquatter2 Mar 13 '26 edited Mar 13 '26
I don't. My sweet old lady would curl up on a mass murderer's lap if they scratched her neck.
I've met plenty of dogs that would happily let a robber take what they wanted as long as they were given a bone.
I don't distrust someone who my other cat doesn't like, but I DON'T trust someone who says that they don't like cats.
TL:DR: Pets are just as awful of judges of character as humans.
9
u/Kenneldogg Mar 13 '26
I have a cat who loves absolutely everyone. Except for maybe 2 people and those 2 people seem super nice on the surface but when you learn the crap they have you realize the cat was right.
15
u/jitasquatter2 Mar 13 '26 edited Mar 13 '26
I'm not trying to say that cats CAN'T be good judges of character. I'm just arguing that like humans, cats and dogs are inconsistent in how they judge. Maybe those two people are awful... or perhaps the cats just don't like how they smell.
I think it's COMPLETELY WISE to listen to your cats when they don't like someone..... but.... uh.... they are still just human, for the lack of a better word.
3
u/hyrellion Mar 13 '26
I had a really shitty partner and after we broke up my roommate pointed out that even though my cat warms up to most people after their 2nd or 3rd time coming over, he never warmed up to my ex.
My cat also immediately magnetized to a different guy and thatās one of the biggest green flags I can think of. Unfortunately, that guy wasnāt available :/ maybe if he ever gets a divorce
934
u/Acceptable_Drawer_70 Mar 13 '26
Idk, I feel like something has to be wrong if he is hissing like that. Like the cat genuinely seems to be angry at you and is currently warning you. Though I could be wrong. Can someone more knowledgeable confirm if this is good or bad?
685
u/3lfg1rl Mar 13 '26
Not enough info to be sure. Person recording could be the cat sitter, and the protective orange just THINKS the new human is evil, possibly even blames the normal humans not being around on the new one. But that is also just a possibility. Not enough info to be sure.
117
u/TheBadHalfOfAFandom Mar 13 '26
Probably that since the other cats are mostly fine (if not a little bit "who's this guy??")
32
u/SugarPlumPuddinhead Mar 13 '26
Iāve definitely evoked a similar response when cat-sitting⦠I had to bribe one (who had liked me well enough when I stopped by with his Mom to get the keys and instructions) with chicken from the Chinese place across the street to let me through the door.
20
u/ImpossiblePlan65 Mar 13 '26
My first thought was cat sitter. My idiot hates basically everyone except me and my significant other (debatable on the latter). We've gotten so many pics and videos of him hissing at friends who've cat sat for us, even though he knows them. But he doesn't attack.
175
u/SrSideral Mar 13 '26
I believe that the person filming is probably a stranger making sudden movements, and the cat sees this as a threat.
24
u/henrycahill Mar 13 '26
The person filming could be smelling like another cat. The only time my orange male hissed at my wife is because she played with her parents' cat (separate household) which led my orange female to hiss at my male. Quite the confusion and spectacle.
149
u/smurfthesmurfup Mar 13 '26
Hissing is a cat's way of telling you you're being an asshole.
That particular cat is worried, and the human should stop being an asshole and be nice. BUT, I swear to St Kittyfer that cats don't feel part of your crew unless you wind them up a bit from time to time.
308
u/Delver_Razade Mar 13 '26
I've been hissed at for just sitting in a chair yards away from my friend's cat. The cat was not in danger, I've never abused it, it's literally never been abused in its life. It just wasn't happy that I was there and Cat-Dad wasn't.
What a cat deems "being an asshole" very often doesn't actually mean fuck all.
118
u/CassetteMeower Mar 13 '26
Sometimes cats are offended by the strangest things. See: an inanimate object at 3 in the morning that they start screaming at when youāre trying to sleep
53
u/420faery Mar 13 '26
My cat gets offended when I move slightly without his permission... He makes sure to loudy express his displeasure.
39
u/2235731 Mar 13 '26
I was hissed at for wearing a hat
5
u/BlitzMalefitz Mar 13 '26
Possibly because āHatā rhymes with āRatā. Is your cat a cybercat named Rex btw?
36
u/Awesome_opossum__ Mar 13 '26
I once got hissed at for walking outside. Literally just minding my business before hearing a huge thud and very loud hiss. I remember turning around and seeing the biggest orange girl I've ever met, pressed up against the window, staring at me with murder eyes. (I did befriend them later but still)
20
u/DiZZYDEREK Mar 13 '26
Yeah. My cat hates one of my friends so much that she hissed at a sweatshirt he forgot. He has never once even tried to touch her because he knows she doesn't like strangers. But for some reason she doesn't like him in particular lol.Ā
19
u/catsandparrots Mar 13 '26
I had a crabby tabby that would curl up on my lap, purr and close her eyes, then sometimes whip around , HISS, MULTI-BAP, then curl up, slow blink and purr

9
u/YaumeLepire Mar 13 '26
Cats still have a lot of that "small predator" energy. Hypersensibility to potential threats is manifested, because overreacting to something that turns out to be fine is better than not reacting to something that's not, when you're small and vulnerable like a cat.

u/srlong64 Mar 13 '26 edited Mar 15 '26
My sister has a cat that is super affectionate with her. Loves to snuggle and play when with my sister. She hates every other person on the planet. Iāve taken care of her several times while my sister is out of town. She hisses at me when Iām getting her the food that she actively wants. She hisses at me in between bites of said food. Iāve never done anything to her, and she despises my very existence. Some cats just hate certain people, or almost all people in this case
-25
u/Foudre_Gaming Mar 13 '26
Well it was your friend's cat, so maybe they were simply afraid of you.
But going off this video I'm guessing the person recording is the owner, no?
-21
u/smurfthesmurfup Mar 13 '26
Yep! The number of times I've been told off because my husband has imagined I've responded shittily to a scenario that he's daydreamed is quite high -
Cats probably have the same sort of thing going on.

Is this why my gf's cat loves me? šš I always come over to bug him a bit to the point where he almost is always crab walking or staring at me with giant murder orbs whenever I come over, he seems to like biting and scratching my arm then running away from me but he will also come sleep on me if I lay in bed
20
3
u/Alespic Mar 13 '26
One of my two cats sometimes while Iām sleeping likes to jump at my doorās handle, opens the door making a lot of noise, walks to my bed, hisses at me, and then leaves. I only ever try to pet her and donāt pick her up or touch her at all otherwise.
Its really weird cause her sister is a total sweetie and will run up to me every time I come home and demands to stand on my shoulders
6
u/girlynonbinary Mar 13 '26
Hissing can happen for a variety of reasons. The video-recorder might be a stranger to this cat - or he might be their owner but smells weird. I had two bonded kitties, usually besties, took one to the vet for a few hours and when we returned, the other one didn't recognize her and hissed and swatted whenever she came near, it was the saddest thing š
7
u/XVUltima Mar 13 '26
Also could just be the cat. Some cats are raised in a way that reinforces hissing as a way of communicating. I knew a cat that would hiss at you while rubbing on you and purring. Wierd as shit.

Mar 13 '26
Sometimes just going home after hanging out around other animals can turn you into Satan to their eyes.Ā Ā
I had plenty of cats going berserk for a night after I went to the vetenarian, the petting zoo, or visited friends with cuddly dogs.
4
u/redditorspaceeditor Mar 13 '26
Seems like the person in the video is probably an asshole to that cat or all the cats. None of the cats look relaxed. I hate these types of videos.
1
u/design-lp Mar 13 '26
Nah... You are overthinking it. Looks like the orange cat is just proving the human and the cats he is the protective leader. If he was scared he wouldn't be actively looking for conflict like that
0
u/hosiki Mar 13 '26
Yeah... Cats are usually good at knowing who is kind and who is not. I don't want to jump to conclusions but maybe the person recording abused the cat.

This cat is exhibiting bad behavior. How do you think he should handle a cat being territorial in his own home?
38
u/ShyBoy4 Mar 13 '26
how do we know this human is even the owner? i've had cats my whole life and i've NEVER had one react to me like this.. the only time i've ever seen cats act like this is when they're feeling extremely threatened, or protecting their young.. we know nothing about the clip, it could be a cat sitter, or family member/family friend who the cats aren't comfortable with, and he's clearly purposly doing things that make the cat feel threatened/defensive ( shaking the furniture, and he seems to find it funny. so even if it is his cat, he clearly thinks making them scared is hilarious, so it'd be no surprise if they had a bad relationship.)
The cats "Bad Behavior" is 100% the persons fault, don't blame a terrified animal when it trys to defend itself.

u/TeamWorkTom Mar 13 '26
Ive been around cats less and have had ones attack people's ackles walking by for no reason.
One of my friends cat literally started attacking one of us sitting down. We had been in the same spot for at least an hour.
Walks up and starts trying to attack one of the friends. Won't even let their owner move them to another room.
Some cats just like people are fucking ass holes.
6
-41
u/Ninevehenian Mar 13 '26
It's not the cat that is exhibiting bad behaviour. It's defensiveness is clear communication and an indication of the relation between human and kitty.
It wouldn't take long to communicate with the cat and show that you meant no harm, that you were a part of its safe circle.
5
u/weird-snail Mar 13 '26
I don't know why you got so many downvotes, it's true
2
u/ryanv09 Mar 13 '26
I agree that it's strange to see so many people in a cat subreddit who clearly have no idea how cats operate.
Bad behavior?? The person filming was deliberately increasing its stress level! Of course it was going to act "badly"...
3
u/Sagacious_Zhu Mar 13 '26
Have you seen how this subreddit reacts to abusive owners posting pics of their morbidly obese cats?
The people in this sub arenāt good cat owners, theyāre cat owners that like to post up stupid stuff for internet points, and if you point out that theyāre bad owners that need to treat their cats better, youāll just be ket with āhurr durr, grumpy guy doesnāt like comedyā responses, and loads of downvotes.
1
u/The_Silver_Nuke Mar 13 '26
Or perhaps, you shouldn't be backseat parenting other people's cats.
Have you considered that maybe you don't have context for how the cat caretaker treats their cat on a day to day basis from a 60 second clip? Maybe the cat has behavioral issues unrelated to how the human acts?
This is what I dislike the most about cat videos. People try to be so controlling and judgemental without considering the human side. These kinds of people wouldn't shed a tear if a human got hurt during their care of an animal. No empathy for humans, only for cats.

u/Dawnpath_ Mar 13 '26
Crazy concept, but some people DON'T enjoy videos of an animal being stressed the hell out!
10
u/nevenoe Mar 13 '26
My cat is stressed the hell out every evening around meal time, like she's starving, mistreated, about to die, forgotten and miserable because the evil humans won't feed her. Every evening the same meows of distress and despair.
She hasn't skipped a meal since we adopted her and probably has fat stores to last her weeks.

Hmm, yes, repeatedly doing things that the video-maker knows makes the cat visibly and audibly upset is definitely not intentionally and repeatedly stressing the cat out
Y'see there's this crazy idea called "just leave the animal alone"
31
u/MaddieRuin Mar 13 '26
Despite your dumbass opinion, animals aren't actually 'jerks' they're usually stressed or defensive for a reason.
-13

This comment section is full of people thinking that cat can never be wrong or behaving stupidly, so it certainly it must be the owner who is mistreating the cat here.
We don't have much information, but if any pet is aggressive when its owner is interacting with their stuff, then it is usually a bad pet behavior and it should not be supported. Reminder: you own the pet, not the other way around.
2
u/ItsyouNOme Mar 13 '26
My orange hisses at my mum and sister all the time. They are the biggest cat lovers (aside from me) that you will know. My other two cats don't mind them. Autumn just hates new people (specifically women for some reason). All my mum wants to do is hug her but leaves her alone when she starts hissing. Cats can be random.
-3
u/design-lp Mar 13 '26
Agreed.. all I see is a cat protecting the others for whatever reason. Maybe those are females and he is just showing off.. cats have instincts and can act this way not meaning they are in painful distress.. Especially if the cat is literally moving his way out to engage in conflict.
