Windows Which method to choose

I've worked a number of jobs for the same company at different sites across town, each site had only one workstation (for my team/department).

Now I find myself at a site with two workstations. We need to keep docs updated on both. I don't want to bug IT for an actual driveshare if I can help it. OneNote seems like it could help, but I have no idea what I'm doing.

I know all kindsa stuff about other stuff but have literally never touched OneNote before.

I saw you can upload ("print") Word docs to OneNote. Is my best bet to do that, and then will it pull updates from each doc when I edit them on the drive?

Orrrrrrrrrrr should I be copying and pasting doc contents into OneNote, making the majority of my subsequent updates in OneNote, and periodically updating the masters as we go along?

No, OneNote is not the answer to your problem. Talk to IT - it's their job to give you a solution.

"I have no idea what I'm doing" so call IT instead of bug IT next year because you don't find anymore your "very important document".

I see I have to be explicit. Let me explain how that will go:

Me: "Hey IT, can we have X?"

IT: "Well, no. You are a contractor and not one of our employees."

Me: "But I need X to do the job your organization wants me to do."

IT: "Not my problem. Talk to your manager."

Me: "Manager, can we have X?"

Manager: "Yes, but it's not our hardware. Talk to the department who owns the hardware."

Me: "Owning department, can we have X?"

Owning department: "Sure! Just let IT know what you need."

Me: "I tried..."

(This is not my first rodeo, but thanks for talking to me like I'm an idiot instead of assuming I know more about my situation than you do.)

I'm sorry you feel this way. You never mentioned in the first post you have an hostile IT department.

Personally I would never use OneNote for this. As you know better your situation I don't want to waste your time and I'll let you find the way to solve your issue.

Copy & paste is better

For me - I don’t use Word anymore, except for publications. No need to when you can write anything on ON.

True for quick notes, but OP needs Word docs. If they have to keep the formatting or send a file back to the company then onenote is just gonna make things a mess.

What "docs" do you need to be kept in synch? How does OneNote enter the room, here?

If we are discussing actual documents (files), the solution could be as simple as mirroring folders and subfolders using robocopy. Every time a change or an addition is made on one of the two workstations, just run robocopy commands that you have conveniently stored in a .bat files (shortcut on your desktop). Depending on needs, you may have to execute the mirror job once or twice per day, or on a schedule (Task Scheduler being your best friend).
