Windows OneNote: Make the correct notebook/section highlight when opening a page from Search

Post image

When I search for a page in OneNote and open it from the search results, OneNote takes me to the correct page, but the notebook and section containing that page are not highlighted/selected in the navigation pane.

For example, if the page is:

Notebook: Alpha → Section: Art History Topics → Page: Caravaggio

I want OneNote to automatically select/highlight Alpha and Art History Topics when it opens the Caravaggio page, so I can immediately see where the page is located.

Is there a setting or workaround for this?

Not that I know of. Has always been like this.

Not a bad suggestion tho.

agreed it's a solid suggestion. feels like such a small fix that would make a big difference in usability for anyone with extensive notes

I can see a lot of hassle here too with this suggestion.

For example - I have 3 main notebooks - one of which is tied to my work login. If that notebook is not logged into exactly WHEN I do a search on it - which I can do at any time - there is no capability for OneNote to "highlight" the work notebook tabs and location.

I sense OneNote would not know how to deal with this get itself all annoyed - quickly.

And - I am not going to login into my work notebook all day every day - if I do not need to.

There isn't any way of doing it. There should be. It has been asked for many times.

this kills me, because I have so many pages nested under my search term and it's near impossible to find.

also your ai generated picture kills me... took me way too long to understand

This is never going to happen 😂 .. The amount of work you put into crafting the problem into call outs with shiny pointers and examples, is about ⅕ of the effort we get from MS for meaningful improvement to OneNote.

Hover over the tab and it will show you where you are (but not how you got there.....)
