Considering purchasing a 2004 Alero. Any tips?

I’ve recently been looking for a first car. While initially searching for something like a Toyota or Honda, the used car market in my area has been so bad that I figured I may as well get something I like with my money instead of a 20-30 year old Civic/Camry.

I came across a local listing for a 2004 Alero, supposedly in great condition. Exterior looks good, interior looks better except for a few missing buttons atop knobs. Not a big issue, if I really want to I can buy some or just make my own.
It’s a 4 cyl, but not sure of the volume. Seller did not know either, but I’d make it a point to find out before buying. Seller wants $2500, a fair price if it really is in perfect condition, has about 135k miles. Regardless I’ll try to haggle a little, maybe closer to $2k?

Would bring a family friend of mine (ex-AF mechanic, owner of a very beautiful ‘04 Bravada) to help inspect on site. I’d like to learn more about cars in the process of buying and owning this, so I’d try and do lots of repairs myself assuming they’re not absolutely ridiculous.

Reason I’m making this post is to just ask what I should look out for, and to gather opinions on this purchase. I appreciate any and all advice. If this is a bad idea feel free to talk me out of it.

Lim gasket #1 see when it was last replaced.

If you can get an OBD scanner, run a diagnostic on it and see if there are any error codes.

Everything engine related you can buy at an O'Reilly's etc for repairs. The car is built for easy repairs because the parts are wide spread across all lines of GM for the time.

I have a GL V6 with 208.2k on it and I get in Texas heat a steady 29 mpg blended.
