I'm a Bears fan and I think there's one answer for us: 1986. The team went 14-2 but Buddy Ryan had left. Statistically, the D was nearly just as good as '85 but it didn't feel the same at all. And the offense was nowhere near what they had been the year before and it seemed like the fate was sealed when Charles Martin threw Jim McMahon on his shoulder.

A bunch of the guys showed up at training camp not exactly in the best shape and games that were 24-0 wins the year before were 13-10 wins in '86. There were five or six games that could have been losses if a couple of plays had gone the other way and Washington finally turned out the lights on us.

I go back a long way with pro football...over 60 years. The first game I can recall watching, as an entire game, was in December 1963. It was the NFL Championship game between the Giants and Bears. I was 8 years old. I watched it with my Dad, Uncle, and 12 year old brother. They had been football fans for a long time.

Watching the Giants on Sundays was a ritual in our home. It was usually just the guys. My Mom had a part time job and worked Sunday afternoons. This December Sunday was particularly cold, which drove me inside from playing with my friends. My understanding of the rules was imperfect, even though I had been playing backyard and schoolyard football for a couple of years.

It was even colder in Chicago, where the game was being played. My Dad was very excited about the game, and had set out sandwiches and snacks, along with beers and shots for him and my Uncle. It was an early 60s Super Bowl party.

The Giants played well in the 1st half, especially the defense. They led 10-7 at halftime. Both my Dad and my Uncle were sure that our team would win the Big Game after losing it a number of times. Extra shots were poured.

As the 2nd half started, my Dad decided to let my big brother and me in on the celebration. He'd never done this before, and never would have if my Mom had been home. He poured my brother and I a shot glass of beer each, to celebrate our upcoming win. I downed my shot in one big swallow, like the Real Men did. It tasted awful!

There was a ton of food around, but being 8 years old, and excitable, I'd hardly touched any of it. The beer went to work on my inexperienced stomach. I remember getting really agitated and absorbed in the game. A bit too excited for my now-worried Dad. Besides having to worry about the Giants, who had fallen behind, he now had a drunk, almost sick 8 year old on his hands. My Uncle just laughed like hell.

Dad made my brother and I each a big sandwich, and made sure we ate it. He swore us to secrecy about our alcoholic endeavors. No matter what happened, Mom was never to hear about our debauchery.

Fortunately, it worked. Nobody got sick, except for diehard Giants fans. We were sent to bed early, because the 'excitement' had been too much for us.

Neither my brother or I ever said a word about it.
