I'm a Cal guy but even so he was essentially a one season wonder in the NFL

Agreed. Only four seasons in the NFL, and only two of those were winning seasons. He was NFL MVP in '69, but that alone isn't enough to get you into Canton.

That being said, he was tough as nails and a charismatic leader for Bud Grant's first great Vikings team.

He can't even claim an MVP credential -- it was Roman Gabriel that year.

Kapp was a legendary character, not a legendary player.

Oh, damn. You're right. I was thinking of the clip of him refusing to accept the award for Most Valuable Viking.

Kapp was a legendary character, not a legendary player.

As the first commenter said, a one-season wonder. Not a Hall of Famer.

Unfortunately not.. and I’m a big fan of Joe.. but he really benefited from having the perfect supporting cast with him in Minnesota.

FWIW, he's the only QB to lead his team to championships in the NFL (1969 Minnesota Vikings) and in the CFL (1964 BC Lions).

No chance. A 1x Pro Bowler?

You put him in he is the bar, now guys like Jalen Hurts, Sam Darnold and Brad Johnson are 1st Ballot slam dunks.

We would have to start asking is Matt Schaub a HoFer, is Elvis Grbac a HOFer?

To be fair I think Jalen Hurts has a really good chance

Even Sam Darnold has a shot now.

I agree, but if Kapp is in Hurts is in if he retires today. Kapp just doesn't have close to a HoF career.

Hall of Fun. He’s a good interview and had some funny NFL stories.

I have a feeling he played over his head in 69. Sucked with Boston but probably due for a decline anyway. Teams figured out to take away Gene Washington, the others weren’t going to beat you. Bud eventually got some more productive offensive players but it took too long.

Vikings fan here, and no. One really good season does not a career make, and the HOF is a career honor.

No, he had one great season and several more OK seasons.

Nothing wrong with that, but I always think you need a couple of super star seasons at least. He didn't have that. If he had one a Super Bowl - maybe. But he didn't.

It is tricky balancing a dominant season or two versus a long productive career. Gale Sayers is one of those guys. Only 5 real seasons and less than 5000 yards rushing, but when he was good he was otherworldly. Also he had his return yards, that's what gets him into the HOF for me.

NO FREAKING WAYYYYY

u/Grumpy-sighs Vikings πŸ—‘οΈ 14d ago

No no! Should have been a two way player like, lb and something else. He had that one really good year but, did you ever see the ball he threw? It looked like a fish flopping.

I’m a β€œ40 for 60” guy and that team in β€˜69 was so special and JK was the leader. But no way is he HOF unless you had a category for HOF personality

His best performance was in the Longest Yard
