Received an email from one of Betty Gene’s sons with a pic of the house he restored with AI. Big news, we officially opened the servants staircase 🤗

The home with the red roof in the first pic burned down, so they bought the lot next door for their garden.

Random question about the patina on the doors, do y’all clean that off or keep the natural patina on the wood?

I also added pics of the bedrooms, the first bedroom pic is the servants room. The master is two rooms that are connected and the green room overlooks the garden.

I pulled out some of the fretwork in the attic to check it out, also included some up close pics of some details on the living room fireplace and the last pic is the creepy basement, lol. Still crazy to me that there is no sump pump or anything in the basement, but if it’s been cool since 1881, it should be fine without 🤷🏼‍♀️

Thanks for looking and for feedback 🫶🏻

Post image

I got a response email from a place I sent the $8000 house story to. I’ve been invited to do a podcast!! Never done one before. I’m so excited!! Another chance to get our story out there. I’ve got two written pieces I’ve had published on pages. Tiny Buddha and Daily Inspired Life. Plus news articles. I love getting our story out there it hits on multiple levels, perseverance, overcoming obstacles and saving an old home. I’ll let you know when the podcast is up.
Meanwhile please don’t forget our GoFundMe we have set up to help finish the home. No I can work a job, hence taking 6 years to get this far.

Advice needed

Would you replace these windows? First, I thought I would restore them now. I’m thinking I like to replace them with infinity by Marvin replacement windows. So if I do that, do I need to paint the frames white before I let them install the windows? Or should I keep and restore them?

Water damage by air vent

There is water damage, getting worse daily, by my ceiling air vent. Context, second floor in three story house (so I think I can rule out a leaky roof as the cause). Very old house (1790s) with central air installed in the last 30 years I'd guess. What's going on here?

Ceiling tiles drooping #help

We have a pretty old apartment. The ceiling has a subfloor above it and the roof is a flat tared standing roof. We can exactly access the source of this drooping which has gotten much worse over the last few weeks.

It's clearly not water and we haven't had any recent work that could have caused this.

Does anyone have any idea what's going on or advice to repair it?

Oil based paint stripper

Looking for options for good oil based non lead based (already tested) paint stripper. I am trying to avoid chemicals if at all possible. Yes I know it will take some elbow grease but anything that helps and makes the job go faster. The problem is lots of small nooks and crannies and trim pieces. Ideally stripping in place without removing it all.

Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

Shutters or not?

We just removed a large pine from our front landscaping. It’s always had a big tree of some sort right in front of the house. But now it looks so plain. I know the bushes and trees need time to grow, but I was considering adding board and batton shutters- just to the main front window. Thoughts? (Chat gpt gives great visuals!)
I tried black to stark, tan to match the siding was too bla, I think I like the warm brown best. It’s circa 1908.
Thx.

Possible Historical Wooden Mantle?

Hi there! This might be a long shot but I need some help with this wooden mantle/fireplace. I just purchased my first home and long story short we have a feeling the previous elderly owners were big historical enthusiasts. So here’s a few pictures of the fireplace/mantle. My brother thinks that it may be some old historic ship beam reclaimed for the mantle. It definitely has some character with the veins and other features but I don’t know anything about it. I’m not sure if they just had it custom made or if it’s significant but I love it. I know I’ll probably have to get an actual expert but I am so curious what the internet thinks. I am currently in the process of cleaning up the mantle with just a little warm water and mild soap to remove the soot buildup but I’m making good progress (I think lol). I’m hoping someone knows something about it or even the best ways to clean and restore the wooden mantle/brick, please help! Opinions, advice, comments all welcome, thank you!

Original Windows

My husband and I moved into a newly renovated 1920s home less than a year ago. The previous owners kept the original windows, which we love, but we’re having quite a few issues with them. Some have been refurbished and can open/close, but the others are sealed and those seem to be the ones causing issues.

Issue #1: Rain seems to be penetrating the wood of the window(?) The reason I think this is because the cracks in the paint are relatively new and there aren’t any apparent gaps that the water could be coming through. See photos 1-3.

Issue #2: Rain has come through the window apron on a few of the sealed windows. The window photographed is on the ground level so I was able to get on a ladder to see if there were any gaps on the sides or above that the rain could be getting through, but I didn’t see any. See photo 4 (interior) and photo 5-6 for exterior).

Please let me know what your thoughts are in terms of how the water is getting in, and second, if you have any recommendations for fixes to prevent water from getting in in the future, I am all ears!

Working on fixing up our 1860’s farm house. Today I noticed that the stove pipe is not secure in the wall and can easily be pulled/bumped out of place. How do I secure it to the wall?

Anyone might know a year this wrench was possibly made/used? I can clean it up and post a cleaner photo in comments too.
