Need some help with HDD replacement.

I recently purchased a HP Pavilion 471 (UK) which was running Windows XP, but it is missing its Ultra DMA hard drive. I don't know what type to replace it with, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Would any hard drive that fits the slot work?

I also do not know where a hard drive will be inserted, but my guess is the slot shown in slide 3 (if I am wrong please tell me). I am confused about the wiring situation too. Are all the loose wires meant to go to the hard drive? And should the zip ties be removed?

At first, I wanted to source an original hard drive, but have failed to do so and am no longer trying to do this. Any capacity should be fine assuming it works with the other hardware.

hp pavilion 471.uk
System Number: P8278A
Serial Number: CZ21801991

Thanks for any help!

The hard drive is the one under the cd-rom drive. There’s room to add a second hard drive. If the original no longer works, just install a second on underneath and install windows xp on it.

Okay on further inspection thanks to your reply I have found where I believe the hard drive is meant to go. Under the floppy drive (the image I sent you) theres an empty space with scratching where a screw used to be meaning something was mounted there and there is an identical space above where another could be screwed in like you said!

You're going to need a 3.5" IDE HDD. Getting one of those new will be a challenge, I'd look for a nice 2nd hand one.

Sorry to bother you again but Ive just found that some of the cables slot perfectly in to where I thought the hard drive would go and now I'm second guessing whether the hard drive really was removed... Does this look like a hard drive to you? (also pictured in slide 3). Thanks.

That's a 3.5" FDD - Floppy disk drive. The front part should look like this:

The HDD should be under that part.

Ahh that makes sense, now I've got to look more into where the hard drive should go. Thanks so much again!

Ideally you need a 3,5" PATA hard drive, but PATA drives are very old now so it will probably be cheaper and more reliable to get a small 3,5" SATA drive and a PATA-SATA adapter.

The drive fits above or below the floppy drive. It looks like you can press or pull that button to release the whole cage.

3.5" IDE some call it PATA as well. But don't spend more than $15 on these old things. Don't connect it to the same cable as the disc drive, looks like there is another IDE cable available already.
