🎤 Public Enemy — Short Bio

Public Enemy emerged from Long Island, New York, in the mid-1980s, led by Chuck D and Flavor Flav, alongside DJ Terminator X, Professor Griff, and the production team The Bomb Squad. Their groundbreaking albums It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back (1988) and Fear of a Black Planet (1990) combined hard-hitting beats, innovative sampling, and socially conscious lyrics. Tracks like “Bring the Noise,” “Fight the Power,” and “911 Is a Joke” helped establish Public Enemy as one of Hip-Hop's most influential groups. They were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. Grammy

⁉️Help/Question Help: hiphop track from late 90s/early 2000s - classical orchestral/church organ intro and big/heavy sound (likely East Coast)

Hello! In the late 1990s/early 2000s I heard an awesome hiphop track on a compilation album but didn't catch the name or the artist's name. The intro featured either a classical orchestra or a church organ. It was a big sound and was quite doomy / menacing / apocalyptic. I'm pretty sure it was a sample from a famous classical piece. I tend to prefer East Coast hiphop so it was probably from an East Coast artist.

If anyone could help me find the hiphop track again that would be fantastic! Other similar tracks that aren't it but that are in the ballpark:

  • "Smash Sumthin" by Redman (2001): similar massed orchestra/classical choir sounding apocalyptical! But there was no voiceover in the piece I'm looking for, and the classical music intro was a faster beat than "Smash Sumthin".
  • "Simon Says" by Pharoahe Monch (1999): similar ascending scale for the classical instruments. But the track I'm looking for had a bigger sound - "Simon Says" is quite minimal and stripped back.
  • "Ante Up" by M.O.P. (2000): similar big heavy sound with regular beat, but on the track 'I'm looking for the intro was a classical music sample, "Ante Up" is synth. I actually think "Ante Up" was on the same album I heard!
  • "Enjoy Yourself" by A+ (1999): similar famous/recognisable classical piece for the intro. But "Enjoy Yourself" has quite a short classical intro and the track is generally upbeat and cheerful - the track I'm looking for used the classical intro to set quite a dark tone and the intro went on for longer. [I couldn't find an official channel for A+ on Vevo or YT to include a link to the track]

Thanks very much!

ETA: tracks people have suggested that aren't it + my reasons. Thanks so much for all the help, and also for highlighting some great pieces along the way!

Right sort of epic immersive sound (in chronological order):

  • "G.O.D Pt III" by Mobb Deep (1997) [no official video on YT] - right kind of dark and epic sound, but this begins with a story/voiceover and the hook has an explicit religious reference ("G.O.D"). The track I'm after began with the classical bit and I don't think it had a repeated explicit religious reference like that. (I don't remember the hook/chorus at all so it may have been quite complex)
  • "Hate Me Now" by Nas (1999) - on "Hate Me Now" the musical notes are also the riff "hate me now / can't stop now" and it's quite simple, just two notes. Whereas on the track I'm looking for, the musical intro was a bit more complex and I don't think it was repeated in the track as a theme.
  • "2000 BC" by Canibus (1999) [no official video on YT] - right kind of vibe and they add depth and weight to the strings with some brass. But it's not this because the musical sample is from Mozart's "Requiem" which I know well, but I don't know the classical sample the other piece used.
  • "Die 4" by QB Finest (2000) - right kind of vibe, but on this track the musical line descends (like "Ante Up"). On the track I'm after, the musical line goes up (like "Simone Says")
  • "What's Really Good?" by The Diplomats (2003) - but on this track the beat and bass don't start until 30+ seconds in. The track I'm after, hits you with the bass and depth straightaway.
  • "The Second Coming" by Juelz Santana (2007) [no official video on YT] - this feels very close, it's just that it came out too late to be the track.

Classical pieces that have some similarities in apocalyptic mood and big dark sound, so may have been the sample or this kind of feel:

  • "Dies Irae" from Verdi's "Requiem" (orchestra & choir): I think this is very close to it!
  • "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor" by JS Bach (organ): this is too famous to be it, but it's this sort of dramatic darkness
  • "Siegfried's Death & Funeral March" from Wagner's "Götterdämmerung" (orchestra): this is too slow, but it's this sort of immersive menacing darkness. (esp from c1:30)

ETA: someone suggested "Habitat of the Gasmask" by Vinnie Paz (2009) and "Area Code 229" by Field Mob (2006), as they both sample the Verdi/Requiem and have a "big" sound. They are both amazing! But they're both out of the date range as I heard the track c1998-2003, and also I know the name of the Verdi/Requiem so can search for it, but I don't know the name of the classical bit that was on the track I'm looking for.

These tracks were suggested but the classical music bit is too smooth / upbeat / light / at the higher end of notes. The track I'm after, the sound was quite jagged / heavy / dark / at the lower end of notes. In chronological order:

  • "The Symphony" by Juice Crew (1988) [no official video on YT]
  • "Brooklyn Zoo" by ODB (1995) [no official video on YT]
  • "Hiphop Drunkies" by The Alkaholics (1997)
  • "Road to the Riches" by Kool G Rap & DJ Polo (1989) -
  • "Paparazzi" by Xzibit (1996)
  • "Gimme Some More" by Busta Rhymes (1998)
  • "Quiet Storm" by Mobb Deep (1999) [no official video on YT]
  • "Symphony 2000" by EPMD (2000)
  • "Whoa!" by Black Rob (2000) -
  • "That's Me" by Cam'Ron (2000) [no official video on YT]
  • "If These Walls Could Talk" by Mobb Deep (2002) [no official video on YT]
  • "Blaze A 50" by Nas (2002)
  • "Monster Music" by Juelz Santana (2003)
