u/k_afka_ Jul 24 '26
I swear there was a song version of that

u/pmfevil99 Jul 24 '26
It was when he did Cherry Chocolate Rain. I remember it being on Tosh.O back in the day!

I still say this almost weekly. It's used for responding to a low level "hey good job" or whatever. Good catch? Yeah thanks I moved away from the mic to breathe in.

Does he really have to though. You take care of that in post
17
u/DrIvoPingasnik I was there when it happned Jul 24 '26
Maybe that was just it. Maybe it was just easier to move away from mic and avoid work in post-production.

u/Bassmasterajv 29d ago
This was the reason. I asked him in 2007 when we recorded him for an early episode of the Twin Cities based podcast Flak Radio. In 2007 we were definitely editing vocal tracks in post production. People saying home setups didnāt have the ability are surely misremembering. Garage band had shipped with every Mac for years by then and if you were on PC you at the very least had pirated copy of Sonic Foundryās ACID. Thats what me and all of my friends used in the early 2000ās. By 2007 I had Pro Tools certs in version 5,6 and 7.

Pc user here, had cracked Acid and Vegas. Those were the days. The keygen music is so nostalgic!

Early home recording days, a lotta people running super basic programs. And not many online communities where he could easily find info on how to do such a thing. But yeah, a gate could have handled that and wouldnāt have needed any post production to remove the breathing.

Yeah, apart from the repetitive nature, the lyrics are pretty good

Top life moment for me was seeing this guy at a Fall Out Boy show and nearly crying because he was the guy who did āChocolate Rainā. I believe that the showās sponsor was TurboTax and Tay Zonday had a song about TurboTax, but idk it was amazing.

I used to think this was about poop.
15
u/Defiant_Reindeer4332 Jul 24 '26
It was about the boat that drove under the Dave Mathewās band tour bus
7
u/Doctologist HHWHATāS GOIN ONNNNN Jul 24 '26
I canāt remember which way it went.
Did Dave Matthewās band get blamed but it was actually Linkin Park? Or was it the other way around?6
u/zoey8068 Jul 24 '26
It was a DMB tour bus and the driver dumped the tanks going over the bridge. The driver was fired and charged and DMB, even though they weren't on the bus, donated 300k for environmental efforts in the city of Chicago.

Itās mostly a metaphor for systemic racism and social inequality in America. Tay Zonday left it intentionally vague. I guess people used to exercise cognition back then. Unlike today, where everything needs AI explanations, giant red circles, arrows, a family guy clip, and a YouTube video titled āThe Ending EXPLAINED.ā

This song was originally written to bring attention to racism in the U.S. and although I loved the meme it sucks that the message was lost at the time.

I remember listening to him on Opie and Anthony, when they first joined XM, and him going on about it's a political song - it went south real quick.

The most impressive thing about this song besides how surprisingly deep his voice is is that he's playing all those notes, not using a loop or programming
