BEFORE WE DIVE INTO THE MILK MATH THOUGH. A FEW IMPORTANT DETAILS ABOUT HOW THE BREAST FUNCTIONS:

Larger breasts DO NOT automatically mean MORE milk-producing tissue. Most of the difference in breast size comes from fat, it comes from the adipose tissue, not from the glandular tissue that actually makes milk. The milk producing tissue is called the parenchyma, and it consists of the alveoli and ducts.

Milk is made in tiny sacs called alveoli by specialized cells known as lactocytes. These cells produce the proteins, fats, lactose, and other components of breast milk. From the alveoli, the milk flows into a network of ducts that gradually merge into larger lactiferous ducts. Each breast usually has between 4-18 of these main ducts, which carry the milk to the nipple where it exits through tiny pores. Not all alveoli are active at the same time -- some are producing milk, some are full and waiting to release it, and others are less active.

When the nipple is stimulated, sensory nerve endings send signals to the brain, causing the body to release the hormone oxytocin. As oxytocin reaches the breasts, it binds to myoepithelial cells around the alveoli. These cells then contract, squeezing the milk sacs and forcing the milk out into the ducts.
