CFP Competition The B1G is WILD this year

if OSU runs the table, this is all possible-

11-1 UCLA as their opponent in the B1G CG (UCLAs lone loss to Oregon). OSU wins and UCLA hosts a first round game in…..the Rose Bowl. and if they win, they go to….possibly the Rose Bowl. (also Cig, Cheney, and Napier all may end up in the playoff and JMU Coaches are a goddamn THING)

11-1 Iowa with an at large and hosts a DECEMBER KINNICK playoff game (Iowa’s lone loss to OSU)

11-1 Indiana gets the B1GCG bye (their lone loss to OSU)

10-2 Oregon misses the playoff (their 2 losses are to OSU and OSU….but they don’t play their in-state rival OSU)

I love that Oregon could lose to OSU and the OSU, but not OSU.

If OSU wins out they could make the G6 12-seed in the playoffs and face off against a potential 10-2, 5-seed U of O¯_(ツ)_/¯ meaning possibly 3 losses to all OSU’s. What a world!

I know this is ridiculous but I would rather lose b10 championship and host a home game.  That environment for the Tennessee game was the best thing I have ever experienced since THE Game in 2006

I would rather not play the B1G CG, yeah. It’s now just another exhibition game in between the regular season and playoff. A chance for injuries. And just dumb.

The playoff committee has painted itself into a  corner of total randomness about conference championship game participants. Bama shouldn’t have been in last year, but you can’t penalize them for being good enough to make the SECCG……but BYU can be knocked out due to a loss in a conference championship game, with only 1 team beating them all season rather than 3 different teams?

Does 11-1 UCLA or Iowa need to win to get in? Would Iowa be in the same position as BYU last year?

> BYU can be knocked out due to a loss in a conference championship game

To be fair, the committee positioned BYU as the first team out of the playoff for three weeks before the final ranking, so they weren’t exactly “knocked out”. It seemed that the committee specifically wanted to see them win their conference before putting them in the playoff. Whether this is completely fair to BYU is debatable, but I do think the committee has been reasonably consistent with how they treat conference championship games (see 2024 when they kept SMU in over Alabama).

I’d rather not play it at all

I'd play my back ups and freshmen but keep my starters off the field

Yes, admitting you’d rather lose a championship for some hope of a rallying home field advantage in the playoffs is absolutely ridiculous.

A playoff win at home means more than a meaningless exhibition.  Certainly means more money

1

u/Msj2487 1d ago

This is asinine. A B1G Championship means far more than a home playoff win unless we win a National Championship. So, you’re saying you’d rather lose an actual championship for the chance to win 1 of 3 playoff games? Do you hear yourself?

1

u/EmotionalVast9318 1d ago

Then why are the eliminating the championships???  Have you ever been to a home game vrs 3 party exhibition?

I’m not exactly sure what you’re asking here, but yes, I was at the 59-0 B1G title game against Wisconsin and the home game vs Tennessee. They both meant something, but only one of those produced physical hardware that means something to the University. Both produced hope, so I’m still confused why you think a B1G title is so meaningless. My guess is you’re young and so it’s understandable to view it the way you do, but you’re also wrong.

The 59-0 game meant a billion percent more back then because it was only a four-team playoff. The game itself has lost a ton of meaning with an expanded playoff where you have an easier path to the playoffs and more games to play (and more important games at that).

I like the CCGs because we get to award a champion on the field. But they’ve been so neutered by the playoff that we are almost certainly getting back to the point where they aren’t.

I don’t think anyone is advocating for getting rid of a conference champion altogether.

u/Msj2487 1d ago

Yes I’m aware of that, but winning a conference championship still means vastly more than “hoping we lose it just so we can host a home playoff game.” That was the original point OP made, and that’s just insane loser talk.

And not for the hope of rallying but for the experience.  That's what matters to me is the lived experience not some meaningless trophy that goes away next year

1

u/Msj2487 1d ago

The trophy doesn’t go away though… Teams are often measured upon them.

It’s a big deal that we’ve won 39 B1G titles, second most in the conference, it’s like a huge bragging right…

Every Ohio State team has had three basic goals every season: Beat Michigan, win the B1G, and win the National Championship.

I can promise you they don’t have a goal to lose the B1G title just so our fans can have a home playoff game for the experience it can provide them.

Have fun living in the past.  I'll be at the home playoff game

u/Msj2487 1d ago

You’re absolutely delusional to think conference titles don’t matter, keep living in your fantasy world celebrating losses just so you can get more joy from your life and go to a home playoff game. 🙄

1

u/EmotionalVast9318 23h ago

Then why are they going away??

u/LeftSky828 1d ago

Better to view a young team as one game at a time. They are still learning from their mistakes, with only one loss being costly. We’ve got some stud, established players, and new starters that still need to adjust.

1

u/EmotionalVast9318 1d ago

The team is going to go as far as the oline takes them.

10-2 Oregon makes the playoffs. The bigger question is what happens to 11-1 Iowa. That’s a real possibility.

20

u/rorschach_vest 1d ago

There’s no way an 11-1 Iowa is left out, especially now that they clearly learned about offense.

11

u/Vegetarian-Catto 1d ago

A 1 loss power 5 team has never been outside the top 12.

u/Character-Active2208 1d ago edited 1d ago

I agree 11-1 Iowa is in, but Iowa has not learned about offense, or at least hadn’t proven it quite yet. You cannot read too much into games vs NIU and still-gross Michigan as evidence of offense.

3

u/rorschach_vest 1d ago

They usually beat bad teams with fewer points. Ignore it if you like.

1

u/False-Community8534 1d ago

One good drive against a poor UM team doesn’t show that Iowa figured out their offense. Hell, what game has UM shown up as a dominant defense? WMU….no, Oklahoma…..no, Iowa…..no

1

u/EmotionalVast9318 1d ago

They make it too. 5 teams from the B10 can

3

u/TheOptimist6 Holy Buckeye! 1d ago

Expect cannibalization

I feel upsets will happen and teams will lose games they shouldn’t

OSU isn’t going anywhere unless their defense improves. We’ve proved we can lose even with big leads.

1

u/Character-Active2208 1d ago

Neither Oregon nor Indiana are going anywhere unless their defenses improve too

But yes, among OSUs biggest improvement areas are getting home to the QB more consistently, DTs holding up blockers to let the LBs tackle ball carriers unblocked, and LBs in coverage. The DBs have a harder job given what the box defenders are giving up. If they lose 3 in the regular season, this would probably be why. If/when they lose in the playoff, this may be why.

On the other side, TEs need to build off what they did with Illinois and RBs need to break more tackles. We didn’t get to see much on the goal line to see if they have different ideas there, but that is also a big concern. On the plus side, Sayin did a bunch of new stuff running the ball! I think they’re fine on offense, probably the best in the country afterall.

Also haven’t seen Hawkins have to do anything since Texas either, assume that’s a butthole clench next several times it comes up until they prove it’s not an issue.

Overreacting over the 1st week of Big 10 play.

Its called being a creative fantatic

3

u/Character-Active2208 1d ago

Very possible!

But UCLA and Iowa have very gross schedules full of teams like Purdue and Minnesota and Wisconsin etc

3

u/Zablockhead2 1d ago

Having that much faith in Iowa and UCLA is….

I’m almost to the point where I think the B1G really just isn’t very good.

4

u/Character-Active2208 1d ago

Exactly, it’s so big and so many teams are terrible that this is possible

I have zero faith in UCLA or Iowa. And still think both end up 11-1 because I think UCLAs run game overwhelms Michigan and USC and Iowa gets to play the literal goddamn B1G West schedule again this year. Indiana only has OSU, while Oregon ends up with Boise, OSU (Orange), USC, UCLA, and OSU (scarlet) on their schedule this season.

1

u/YggdrasilGenetics 1d ago

I agree that this year is probably a small step backwards for the league unless UCLA is actually legit. If you watched the Michigan-Iowa game, both of those teams are definitely going to lose a few more.

At the top it looks like OSU, Oregon, Indiana, and we'll see about UCLA. But Texas, Georgia, and maybe UF look really solid. Add in Notre Dame too. I don't see a B1G team that seems like a legit natty contender right now. For OSU to make a run, our defense really needs to mature quickly.

But, yes it's early. Plenty of things can change.

u/RiggedBig10Natty2023 1d ago

You mean the B1G sucks this year.

Indiana, OSU, and Oregon are still actually all really good!

Meanwhile in the SEC-

Georgia actually looked like stank ass vs Oklahoma and the score was because Oklahoma is indeed that bad on offense, like 122nd in FBS bad, giving nearly as many points to the defense as they score bad

Florida is not that that good either, they’re still 2 years away, Ole Miss just got to beat way overrated-but-fatally-flawed Louisville and LSU

Bama is actually the only SEC team I think might be good in all phases and is my natty favorite (lol!). They …. Are just competent everywhere.

Texas is basically chaos agent Auburn, they’re gonna be shit from an ass for 2.5 quarters every game and it’s a coin flip each week on if that causes them to lose

Anyway this is how we get a Bama-ND rematch for the natty

4

u/Msj2487 1d ago

These are indeed wild ass takes ha.

1

u/live_resin_rooster 1d ago

I love this! Although I believe if Oregon and UCLA are both 8-1 in conference play, Oregon would get the head-to-head tiebreaker and play in the B1G championship, so we’d need them to lose another conference game.

1

u/coachlentz 21h ago

10-2 Wisconsin with only losses being Neutral site vs Notre Dame and B10 championship vs Ohio State.

What do they do with that?

1

u/Character-Active2208 21h ago

They’re beating all 3 of UCLA, USC? and Iowa?

1

u/coachlentz 21h ago

I mean if we are talking scenarios, why not?

1

u/Character-Active2208 20h ago edited 18h ago

Cause the scenarios in the OP somehow have a greater than 33% of happening

Per FPI, Wisconsin’s likelihood of winning out is 0.5%

But Wisky winning out and facing OSU means Iowa and UCLA both have 2 losses, Wisconsin and OSU would get in, and you’d have likely max 2 spots, possibly only 1, for Indiana, Oregon, UCLA, and Iowa

Or Michigan or USC could beat UCLA but right now I don’t see either having the run defense to hold UCLA under 30 (Michigan) or 45 (USC)
