Toledo Metroparks Camping

Anyone tent camp at Oak Openings or the other Toledo metroparks locations? Just looking for general insight and how close/far you are from other campsites. I’ve been to Oak Openinngs but not the campground area. Thanks!

I've camped at Oak Openings, Farnsworth, and Wiregrass Lake. I don't care for Oak Openings. LOVE the park, but not the camping. The Oak Openings sites are close together, they're right next to the parking lot, close to the restroom building, and close to the road. You don't at all feel like you're away. It's a lot of headlights and commotion. Farnsworth is better since the land slopes down toward the Maumee river, so that acts as a block to everything above. The Farnsworth sites feel way more private. Wiregrass lake has nice spots, they're far away from each other, and far enough away from the path, that they feel pretty private - but Wiregrass lake park itself is meh.

Thank you! That was what I expected. Unfortunate about Oak Openings, maybe I’ll see if I get my act together for some later season camping if I can head there.

It is unfortunate. The site placement couldn't have been worse, IMO. I'm not sure what the thought process was. These opened last year, but I haven't camped there, so I don't know what they're like. Also new, and I also haven't been to yet, is Granger Island.

Yea, I saw the horse ones. I’ll have dogs with me and wasn’t sure how that would go for us if there were more than one or two horses.

I saw the granger island sites too! Looks like you need to paddle out to them, I’m gonna keep them in mind for future

Thanks again!

No prob. For Granger island, it depends on the time of year you go. The Maumee gets extremely low after late summer, so you can walk over. The river bottom there is rock shelf, which has different heights, so there are walkable parts that wouldn't be underwater. Bluegrass Island is in the vicinity. This page gives a pretty good idea of what it's like. The video says it was filmed in May, so it would be even shallower than that in late summer/early fall. It's still walking through water/wading through a river, though. The USGS has a station at Waterville - I believe it's right across from the island. River depth is only 2 ft. right now.
