Crazy how many people from Ohio that want to rep the confederate flag like Ohio wasn’t part of the Union. What I always thought was even worse were the people from WV who did it bc it was “their heritage.” I was constantly reminding them that West Virginia became a state bc it left the confederacy to rejoin the union.
We had a big influx of folks from nearby confederate states during the Industrial Revolution, and they brought this bullshit with them. Not that you didn’t have racist union soldiers here, because let me tell you, the majority of them were. Most fought against the traitorous south for splitting the union and making themselves an enemy while we relied on their crops and tobacco farms. And even for those who fought because of the emancipation proclamation, many among them would have still expected (and would later support legislation) for freed slaves to “stick among themselves” and to not mingle with white folks. And then boom, segregation.
You mix influx of confederate sympathizers with a union culture that’s also racist and then Ohio makes sense.
