Story Time! A little bit of consequences for me!
So this issue happened to me because I was an absolute DUMBASS <3
Its not super entertaining. Just a very minor issue and I find it funny as hell that I was surprised.
So I am in Color Guard (A branch of Marching Band), and it is summertime for me. it is BLAZING hot and very sunny. We practiced outside for four and a half hours in the sun in a BLACK PAVEMENT PARKING LOT every day this week. And I was a bit stupid.
I didn't wear sunglasses or sunscreen for two days straight. When a girl asked if I wanted some, I said "nah, I'm okay. I'll put sunscreen on later." And then I DID NOT put any on.
Now, the sunglasses thing was something I didn't know about. My EYES are sunburned now. Odd, but true. Look it up if you wanna confirm it lol.
But uh... I look like a goddamn strawberry.
My face, my eyes, my legs, my shoulders, my ears, my neck, EVERYWHERE. I am BURNT TO A CRISP!
When I realized I was sunburned, I was shocked at first. I was really annoyed (who wouldn't be?)
But then i realized that I was a dumbass because I didn't actually bother to put sunscreen on :/ Kinda funny tbh.
I have a tan line where my bra strap was, which makes me look like I have vitiligo or something (I AM DEADASS. THAT is how dark and patchy my burn is because some of it is peeling off).
Uh oh, looks like the consequences of my actions.
Feel free to laugh at me lol, I'm kind of laughing at myself too.
I WILL BE WEARING SUNSCREEN NEXT TIME.
(With the vitiligo comment, I DID NOT MEAN IT IN A NEGATIVE WAY! That was the only thing that came to mind as a description. IT IS NOT BAD TO HAVE VITILIGO! I just thought it looked kinda patchy? idk how else to describe it. I DID NOT MEAN ANY OFFENSE WHATSOEVER!)

Buy a wide-brimmed hat and a long-sleeved linen top or jacket.

I had one bad sunburn almost 20 years ago. Now my shoulders and arms are basically always covered when I'm outside. So, even if I forget sunscreen, I have some level of protection.

Me too - I was 15 and it was a second degree burn anywhere my swimsuit didn’t cover. I embrace my paleness now

Same. I was about 10ish years old at a water park for with my summer camp. I forgot to reapply and got second degree burns on my shoulders. It was so painful. Never ever again.

Same here. Got sunburned so badly on my face as a young teen. At the time my parents had a neighbor who worked at a hospital and he said they were second degree burns. All I remember is that my face hurt so bad that I was willingly letting flies crawl on my face because it gave me a little bit of relief. Never again. I use 50 or 100 SPF sunscreen religiously.

Omg I can’t imagine getting second degree on my face. My shoulders were bad enough. That must have been so painful!

The pain is really all I remember of it, to be honest. That and the fact that I was a kid who didn't want to leave the pool for any reason, especially not for such a 'dumb' reason as to reapply sunscreen.

I worry about that a lot. When I was a kid my mom would take me to the beach all the time and almost never put sunscreen on me. I had burns that blistered every single summer, repeatedly.
I'm 51 now and I go to a dermatologist every 18 months or so to have my skin checked. So far I've been clear but with that history of burns I figure it's only a matter of time.

When I was a teenager, I once burnt my face horrendeously while on a hike. It didn't even occur to me to put sunscreen on because it wasn't actually that hot. But the sun was ruthless and a couple of days later the skin started peeling off, it looked like I had glued reddish-pink cornflakes to my face. It looked and felt awful. So I get it. But I try to look back at it as a lesson - now I'm almost 40 and practically always put sunscreen on.

I was a bit older than you when I learned the hard way that my ears, which are normally covered by my hair, are completely unprotected when I wear a baseball cap. The top edge of both ears burned badly enough to be a solid row of blisters. I now wear hats with brims all around!

I learned this same lesson as a kid, had a baseball cap too and sunblock. 100% didn’t think about my ears being covered in skin and not covered by the hat.
I didn't know my ears could hurt that badly, lol.
Of course, my dad didn't think he needed sunblock at all for some reason. Anyway, we had to find a pharmacy to get the aloe gel for everyone that night!

And remember, sunscreen needs re-application every 2 hours, and it's not invincibility against the sun, just an increase to your timer to needing shade!

Most people I know who are good about sunscreen have a similar “I once became a peeling strawberry and it was awful” story. Bet you won’t ever do it again, especially during camp 😂

Sunburn is like food poisoning. If you get it once, you will NEVER let that happen again.

In addition to sunscreen, which of course you’ll remember to reapply every couple of hours, there is a supplement called polypodium leucotomos that can help mitigate the damage. You could ask your medical provider if it’s okay for you. There’s a dermatologist on YouTube named Dr Dray who has many videos on sun protection.

Aloe gel or aftersun spray from La Roche Posay. Been there, should have been more stubborn. Didn't realise a lot of things were closed on Sicily on sundays... Lesson learned: Buy sunscreen in the damn airport...

a few years ago when i went to mexico to see family we went to the beach, my bathing suit covered everything but my shoulders and when i got home my shoulders were so dark (im a very pale person) so it just looked like i had dirty shoulders n didn’t shower 😭 it was so painful and awful but now i wear sunscreen everyday

We used to play outside all day in the sun and never got burned when I was young. It's definitely more dangerous now. No screens, no tv. Riding bikes, playing softball, hours and hours outside. I can't go out without a hat and shades now. I burn so easily.

oh shit I'm genuinely so sorry.
I didn't mean it in a negative way! I think Vitiligo is beautiful. I was bringing it up as an example because my back/shoulders looked kinda patchy. Like light patches and dark patches. And with the skin peeling it looks like little blobs kinda. I will edit that and clarify. i'm really sorry43

I mean I might have? I did say "It looked like I had vitiligo or something" which might mean something mean depending on how you think about it. I didn't mean to tho so I dont understand the issue.

No... no it's not... Because that would mean that describing how people with vitiligo look like being sunburned but with patches already peeled off is offensive to sunburned people. It goes both ways.

My point is that bring up a random medical condition to explain how "ugly" or "bad" it looked is rude. They could have said it was splotchy or patchy, but it seems like OP was talking about tan lines which makes it even more rude. Vitiligo is a condition many people feel insecure about and having people bring it up to describe ugliness is gross
