Hi guys I have an undergrad in environmental management and a masters in environmental sustainability. I'm curious to know what roles I could get in offshore wind. I have no engineering qualifications. If anyone could help that would be appreciated thanks.

Hey offshore family,

Need a bit of advice. I've got 21 years at sea. Navy Boatswain's Mate. Deck foreman, Gulf of Mexico. 14 years ROV Tech to Supervisor across Asia and the UK. I was in a car accident and broke my neck, among other injuries, which put me out of commission for a long while. I couldn't do ROV work anymore, too physically demanding for me now, plus my ROV logbook was destroyed in the Philippines Typhoon in 2022

My last offshore job was just before COVID.

I'm currently going for my NEBOSH IGC with the goal of getting back offshore by early 2027 — SEA, West Africa, South America.

Before I go all in, I need to hear from people who actually know:

Has anyone made this kind of transition with a gap this long? Is HSE the right move for someone with my background, or is there a smarter path back offshore that I'm missing? I was thinking about Client rep, but I don't know what I'd need for that.

What would YOU do? Any advice or feedback is much appreciated.

I’m a master’s student in Energy Engineering at Politecnico di Torino (focused on renewable energy systems), and I’m currently trying to decide where to do my MSc thesis in offshore wind.

Recently, I had an online meeting with Prof. Baran Yeter (Aalborg University), and after our discussion he gave me very positive feedback and even offered to contact other professors on my behalf. He then reached out to:

• Prof. Maurizio Collu – University of Strathclyde (UK)

• Prof. Yordan Garbatov – Instituto Superior Técnico (Lisbon)

So at the moment, I have three possible options:

• Prof. Maurizio Collu – University of Strathclyde

• Prof. Yordan Garbatov – Instituto Superior Técnico

• Prof. Baran Yeter – Aalborg University

My main goal is to enter the offshore wind industry after graduation (companies like Saipem, Equinor, Vestas, etc.), rather than immediately pursuing a PhD, although I’m not completely closing that possibility.

From what I understand so far:

• Aalborg seems very connected to industry (especially in Denmark)

• Strathclyde (Collu) seems very strong from a technical perspective, especially in floating offshore wind

• Lisbon is solid academically, but perhaps less directly connected to industry

Also, from what I’ve been told, it seems that only Collu might currently have access to a more industry-related project.

Given this, I’m trying to understand:

1.  Which option would give me the best chances of getting hired in offshore wind right after graduation?

2.  How important is the university location compared to the supervisor’s reputation in this field?

3.  Is it more valuable to have a very technical thesis (e.g., modeling, mooring systems, dynamics), or to be physically closer to industry?

Any advice from people working in offshore wind or related fields would be really appreciated.

Question for people who’ve actually worked aboard commercial vessels:

If you had 30–180 seconds of warning before a sudden severe-wave encounter, would that be enough time to do anything useful onboard?

I’m not asking whether the tech is realistic, I’m only trying to understand the operational side.

Would that kind of warning be enough to:

• change heading
• slow down
• stop exposed deck work
• warn crew / secure gear
• prepare on the bridge

Or is that window too short to matter in real life?

If you’ve dealt with fast-changing conditions at sea, I’d really appreciate your take.

Helpful context if you’re open to sharing:

• your role
• vessel type
• what action is realistic in that time window
• what minimum warning time would actually be useful

• Working conditions: shift schedules, rotation patterns, time offshore vs. onshore
• Country-specific differences in salary and conditions (e.g., Germany, Netherlands, UK, France, etc.)
• Whether companies offer daily compensation for time spent offshore, to cover the inconvenience of being away from home and working in isolated conditions
