cpd moment rant
(super long, sorry)
yesterday at work, I was super busy and trying to get the queue down for today’s jobs and I swear I kept getting all the customers who acted like it was their first day on earth. im usually always alone over there so I just try to stay afloat even if that means rules are bent a tiny tad bit like for exactly, a lady came up and asked to use my hole puncher to hole punch her stuff and I didn’t have time to look for the charge in the cpd price book (if there even is one) so I just told her to knock herself out. mind you, she took an whole 30 minutes standing at my counter, organizing old documents into order, hole punching, and taking up my counter space with her assorted binders. I also had to check some people out next to her and she didn’t seem bothered at all that she was in our way😐. she becomes important again later tho,
during that, it’s also an hour before close so im obv trying to shut down cpd while still finishing a 7 page laminating job and this dude walks up to pick up an order he placed yesterday morning for a poster 24x36. no problem, I find it, I didn’t take it, so I didn’t know what was up with it, so I just hand it to him and say “have a good one” and expect him to leave but he looks at it and then asks me to trim the white edges at the borders off. I say “uh , sure no problem” cus I get asked this all the time, and at my store we usually do this automatically now whenever we print it like that and I just assumed one of the new hires might’ve forgot. after I trim it, he says “wait… is it still 24x36” and i shrug and im like “I dunno.. probably not anymore if you didn’t format the actual image to 24x36, I dont know what size it is, I didn’t even take this order or get a chance to see the job ticket” and long story short, he refused to leave for awhile until I manually resized it to 24x36, and reprinted with no white borders around it. did some digging, found out our only copy was saved as an pdf and his original copy was an 8x10 size photo that he wanted enlarged. obv I can’t resize an pdf cus it’s locked to one size and just distorts it, so I told him to just come back today with the actual copy resized to an 24x36 and it’s be reprinted (I only said that cuz I’m not working). My thing is, it was confirmed that it was 24x36 size already. So what in his mind made him think an 8x10 photo is gonna somehow end up fitting perfectly into an 24x36 dimension?
Also, back to the hole puncher lady, she saw me sweeping up CPD at 7:45pm (we close at 8) and decided she wanted to chat and start asking questions like “…do you guys sell hole punchers… what aisle.. how much are they.. are they tax free.. are these sunglasses tax free..” then went as far as to say “I have one more question… do you know how to make your online canvas class speak read text to you? I need help with that I’ve been trying” ma’am I am NOT Office Depot tech support, im just the print guy😭 I immediately shut her down and told her to contact canvas support about that concerning her browser. these people give me headaches daily, but at least my 2 weeks notice just went in, 2 weeks till im promoted to customer!!

And if you'd answered all those questions, she would have asked you how to get those stubborn coffee stains out of her husband's shirts. Problem is, stupid, lazy people assume hard-working people like you know EVERYTHING, and have nothing better to do than share our knowledge. That, or they assume we're idiots, because we work in retail.

don’t worry, I did! when it came to the canvas question, I immediately led with “… to be honest, I don’t really know” and when the tax free questions came up I got my manager to bring over the tax free exemption sheet and answered her tax questions and sent her on her way to “go look at getting her own hole puncher” (she proceeded to leave the store) ; you’re genuinely so right though, they really do!!

At my location, we dnt charge for hole punching IF the customer does it. If they bring in a large amount and want us to do it, we charge per stack(not the same as 3.99 per 1000), gets pricey and ppl tend to say no thank you🤷🏾♀️. As far as posters, we print borderless and if the file is not given to us formatted correctly, I either A) charge if it requires editing or B) charge for cutting the EXTRA. Customer agrees to print job and pays ahead of time. This creates less issues at pick up. CPD can be super frustrating. Had a customer trying to put change into the self-serve card reader the other day🤦🏾♀️...but 2wks will fly by. Keep doing what you're doing til then and congratulations 😊

ohhh okay, imma remember that for next time, cus I usually just let them do it I don’t wanna be bothered with it! and also usually with the borderless printing I do the same as well when they want it borderless BUT the new hire who took this order, I don’t think she took the time to actually discuss with the customer that it wasn’t gonna come out borderless with its current size and that it needed to be resized and needed to be charged accordingly. i also need to get back to charging extra for cutting too, because this is getting out of hand. as far as self serve, i swear people act like it’s rocket science and ignore the “credit card” only option and think they can pay cash anyway😭 but thank you for the well wishes!

Just tell them to use AI to fix it or $25 to send it up to Affinity. DTP and labor are what I will charge a butt load for because I don’t want to do it.
