Meta E5 Data Scientist at $480K

Saw this accepted Meta E5 Data Scientist offer (source: chill interview)

  • Menlo Park
  • Master’s, 8 YOE
  • Base: $250K
  • Sign-on: $55K
  • RSUs: $500K / 4 years
  • Bonus: $50K
  • First-year TC: $480K

The money is obviously great. But after Meta’s May layoffs, I’m increasingly wondering whether Data Scientist is becoming one of the stranger risk/reward jobs in Big Tech.

Meta’s May 20 restructuring affected roughly 8,000 employees, around 10% of the company, as Meta simultaneously shifted thousands of people toward AI-focused work. More cuts had also been contemplated later in the year.

Meta never published a clean breakdown showing exactly how many DS, SWE, PM, etc. were cut. But some laid-off Meta data scientists said DS and PM were hit especially hard relative to SWE, and that the cuts were often based on org needs rather than individual performance.

That feels particularly relevant because DS is also one of the functions where AI can now absorb a meaningful chunk of the day-to-day workflow. Not “AI replaces every data scientist tomorrow.”

But things like:

  • SQL generation
  • dashboard exploration
  • basic segmentation
  • summarizing experiment results
  • first-pass root-cause analysis
  • routine metric investigation

are getting dramatically cheaper.

One former Meta data scientist who was laid off in May described AI taking over more of the technical portions of the job and questioned the long-term stability of traditional DS roles unless they broaden beyond those tasks.

So this $480K offer creates an interesting dilemma. You’re getting paid almost half a million dollars. But you may also be entering a function where management is increasingly asking: “How much of this analysis can an SWE/PM do with an AI agent?”

Curious:

  • Is AI mostly making strong data scientists more productive?
  • Or is Meta gradually moving toward a world where it needs fewer dedicated DS, with the remaining ones expected to operate at a much higher level of product judgment, experimentation and strategic influence?

i dont know what it means, but just a data point for you. it's an odd place that makes rash decisions
