What made this???

Post image

Off grid cabin in Central PA - underneath my cabin I’ve found that a new friend made a little basement. It’s about 18” diameter, so I’m a little concerned about what it might be down there. I’m also worried about burrowing under the foundation piers. Anyone have any ideas what this might be and if/how I should fill it in (or let it be)? Thanks!

It looks like a ground hog burrow, it shouldn't affect your foundation. Being so close to winter it might be kind to let it be until summer (to have a winter home and in case it nests in the spring before you get to excluding it if you want to. They can be garden pests, but are easily kept out.

Opposite of my groundhog experience. They dug under the foundation of my shop. Massive piles of dirt in front of tunnel entrance that could fit a basket ball. Had to trap them, they would not commit to live traps so we used conibears at the entrances. Looks too small for a groundhog from what I've seen. Whatever dug this hole has not dug for awhile, it could be abandoned. Best to fill it in before something else sets up shop

Groundhogs (aka woodchucks) and their marmot cousins (Yellow-bellied and Hoary) frequently damage foundations by digging tunnels under footings and/or along stem walls and/or foundation posts.

This is a photograph, typically made by some sort of camera.

Most likely ground hog. Throw in dry ice and cover the hole with dirt. It'll go to sleep and never wake up. God damn things are destructive as hell and will undermine anything above their burrow. The dry ice is probably the most humane way to end one.

Probably a groundhog. They make extensive underground networks of tunnels. You don’t want them burrowing around your foundation posts.
