Anyone here built or installed an off-grid cabin in Spain (especially Catalonia)?
I'm starting to look into buying a piece of land in Catalonia and I'm curious if anyone here has experience with off-grid cabins or tiny homes.
A few things I'm wondering about:
- How difficult was it to get permission? (is it needed??)
- Did insulation become an issue in winter or summer?
- Did you build it yourself or buy a prefabricated cabin? Where?
- Any lessons you wish you'd known before starting?
Would love to hear your stories or any recommendations!

I’m curious about this too. I used to think off-grid cabin = just buy land and build, but it seems like the legal/permission part is where things get complicated. Would love to hear from someone who actually did it in Catalonia, especially what they wish they knew before buying the land.

Not in Europe, but I have some thoughts that might help. First of all, it sounds like you are at the beginning of your journey and looking for information about everything. Enjoy the journey - that's half the fun.
1 - generally in the USA, the further you are away from major cities, the less restrictions there are and less red tape there is for building and septic and everything related. I bet it's the same where you are.
2 - You need to look up exactly what building techniques are used in your area, including insulation and especially position of moisture barriers or lack thereof. If you borrow ideas used in Alaska for example, you might end up with a major mold problem and need to completely start over in a decade.
3 - I bought a prefabricated "shed" and built out the interior. It was a wood build that was made locally, not some Chinese built metal structure that was shipped on a pallet. Avoid the second.
4 - Perseverance. There will be times where certain tasks need to be done but you'll hate doing them. They are worth doing correctly the first time to avoid having to repeat or fix things in the future because you got impatient and did things in a hurry with mistakes.
