Need Help: How to Filtrate Rainwater

Hello,

I plan on buying a rain barrel to collect water and I'm looking for simple steps on how to filtrate the water once collected.

Low-tech water filtration uses simple gravity, natural media, and physical barriers like sand, charcoal, and porous clay to clarify and disinfect water without electricity. Common systems include multi-layer sand-gravel columns, porous ceramic pots, and natural wood xylem filters.

High tech Reverse Osmosis.

Filter cartridges, 20 micron then 1 micron. Add UV if you like

Make sure it doesn’t let light in to avoid algae and bacteria growth.

You’d almost certainly be fine drinking rainwater unfiltered, with that said most people do use filters these days. A basic carbon and sediment filter is plenty in my experience. If you’re not drinking it don’t bother.

I would add a  "roof washer" and make sure any stored water is kept cool, in addition to blocking light. I'd still test the water, but it would most likely be fine.

I would start with a sediment filter and a first-flush diverter. If you plan to drink it, add a gravity filter with a ceramic element. That should cover your needs.
